1. Which license are the compiled binary files available under? Is it a case of "open" but not "free" (as in freedom)?
2. I agree it doesn't make it "bad" but that's not what the label says : ) Still, you should be able to solve this easily if you want by letting people use a different server/cdn. You don't have to agree with it as I'm sure you don't agree with all Google Play and Apple Store rules.

I do send a very few people to online resources like @npub167r…p2re, @npub16xn…g7f8, @npub1dm2…7754 and @npub14sl…t5d6, but most people I know have zero interest in learning anything tech-related much less the philosophy behind it!
My chief strategy is that I have something to offer: I'm a teacher and run classes/courses (many of them free) for kids and adults, and I only do them on #Jitsi, #Signal, etc.
Even if they pay fees, I say that Zoom, Whatsapp, etc. are off the table.
I think all of us with stuff to offer that people need are in a great position to onboard new users to #FOSS alternatives, especially if people realise there's money to be saved :)

Unfortunately, switching to alternatives is simply not enough; we also need to be unavailable on SMS, Whatsapp and other proprietary platforms.
Using a data SIM on #LinuxMobile, I have managed to onboard many people, over a hundred, to #FOSS messengers. Before when I preached freedom and #privacy, there'd always be resistance. Now people just accept that WA, SMS, etc are simply not an option and they readily hop on to alternatives if they need to reach me.

Perhaps consider #Librem5, #LibertyPhone, or #MNTPocketReform with #GOnnect...? All of them should connect to Ethernet but they're ARM devices, not x86-64.

After the last update, the Signal "desktop app" is requiring us to launch the mobile app - however, many of us do not have the Android or any other "mobile" version of the Signal app any more.
We are a large (by our standards) group of #Linux phone users, and your "desktop" app is our "mobile" app : )
Our previous phones on which #SignalApp was initially activated was an Android or Apple device and we have since then completely migrated to #Linuxphones. Some of us may have registered Signal on #signalcli, Flare, #Molly, Signal Android in #WayDroid, etc.
The #mobileLinux community is growing - we have members spanning a good number of projects and devices, e.g.

Yes, but at least you'll get some funding for development out of it. Maybe even some insight into what features paid users are missing. Right now, complaining is free without much benefit - instead you have to put in time and effort to reply.

Even if most still don't care, I'm sure his revelations motivated and influenced a lot of #e2ee and #privacy projects which those who do care can use today.
