I retired this year after 10 years of frugality and heavy saving to reach my goals. I owe a lot of that progress to Mr MoneyMustache. But his views on bitcoin were biased and shortsighted. I did far too much defending of bitcoin on his website's forums over the years to an entire following of people who are all too privileged to understand the benefits bitcoin has to the world. Bitcoin aligns perfectly to the FIRE movement, but far too many just don't see it...yet.

How do you onboard new users into WoT? New users won't be in WoT initially which still means their on-boarding experience is tarnished by spam. Paid relays help, but then that is still expecting new users to finely tune relay lists and pay for relay services to start with.
Sometimes freedom of content like this just requires the user to go through some hoops to see only the content they wish to see.

Don't skew the definition of authoritarianism. A single person performing an action doesn't necessarily mean they have full control of something, which is what is required under authoritarian rule.
Also, just because the market of free and open software chooses a single implementation, doesn't mean other choices don't/won't exist. Choice is never eliminated.

Validity of the security of something comes with time, no? MD5 was secure until it wasn't. What we do know is that current algorithms in use will come under attack from quantum computing at some point. So it makes sense to seek/research alternatives against that threat. Perhaps the "post-quantum" or "quantum-resistant" name is the snake oily part, but ultimately it is a worthwhile endeavor none-the-less. Whether any of the crop of "post-quantum" algos stand the test of time is simply a matter of time...

For sure. Governments will use any excuse to expand power. But we just need to be careful to not use that as an excuse ourselves to disregard real threats and risks. We just need to make sure to put a check on government power while tackling these problems with real solutions.

I was going to reply with the same thing. I don't know any decent doctor that would diagnose an autoimmune disease solely based on TSH levels since there are multiple reasons why they could be off. I have Hashimoto's as well and an autoimmune disease means your body has antibodies that attack your organ/gland. So it isn't something that can just be cured of with food and you can test for the presence of these antibodies with a blood test (not just testing for TSH). So she probably didn't actually have an autoimmune disease like the doctor originally said. I'm in excellent health and fitness, but unfortunately, as is the case for anyone with actual autoimmune disease, food and exercise is not a cure.

The only counter to that I'd argue is that with a fully collateralized loan, there is no capital creation in the process and therefore is not a ponzi. Even if the borrower turned around and purchased additional bitcoin with the loan proceeds they received, there is no new capital in the system inherent to the origination of the loan if the bank is simply using their own acquired capital to provide these services (both the loan origination and the later bitcoin brokering).
I think your argument against lending in this case here isn't necessarily against lending specifically, but against the idea of fractional reserve banking that creates new capital via debt and therefore does meet the definition of a ponzi as you described. The capital that gets created can never be fully realized if everyone decides to cash out or break terms at any given time. Money was created out of thin air based on future obligations. If all lending was fully collateralized, then any loan could be closed out at any time without risk of loss for either party. What creates the problems is the fractional reserve part.

I meant 2 of 2, so I edited it. They locknthe bitcion in a 2 of 2 multisig. But it is like lightning where they both sign an unbroadcasted commitment transaction allowing either of them reclaim the bitcoin, but have it time locked for the borrower until after the loan term. At any time the lender can claim the bitcoin without a timelock because the borrower signed a commitment transaction handing giving the bitcoin to them without a timelock.

The lender would have full control of the bitcoin locked in the 2 of 2 multisig since they would be the one given the bitcoin in the commitment transaction. So there shouldn't be any need for additional collateral.

I think perhaps a more secure way of lending would be with a 1 of 2 multisig walletb(borrower and lender each holding a key) with each party signing a commitment transaction for the term of the loan. The borrower is then timelocked from the bitcoin until the end of the loan term, but the lender can spend the bitcoin at any time.
Then, the borrower has some guarantees that if the lender goes belly up during the loan period, then can retrieve their bitcoin after the timelock is up. But the lender has guarantees of the collateral value during the life of the loan.
This is similar to how the lightning network HTLCs work. Just a thought.
Not sure how that'd work in the legal world though. Usually a company that goes belly up sells off their assets, of which the loans still need to be paid back. But still probably better than traditional multisig.
Time locks are great for inheritance though!

Then why would they say "without notice to you?" If the only rehypothecation being done was the transfer to the custody company, they could give notice of that to the borrower and then leave that out of the terms. Instead, they leave it open that it could be rehypothecated any number of times without you knowing.

I receive an email notification for every new bitcoin transaction in my wallet that my node detects. That way when someone steals my bitcoin from cold storage, I get alerted and can pull up the transaction in my block explorer and cry.

Don't get me wrong, as someone who has retired at the age of 42 and have been debt free aside from a mortgage on my home, I abhor debt and understand that more than anyone. But everyone's financial situation is different and saying a penny of debt is equal to slavery is nothing but hyperbole.
Sure, living in a van and travelling the world is a great and free life style. But some people want families and a home and land for their children to grow up in. Who is more enslaved in that regard then, the renter or the home owner with a mortgage?
Everything is relative in the end.

If the LTV ratio is 100%, then you're not really relinquishing control of anything that wouldn't have been spent anyways, no? In the long run I think bitcoin loans will trend toward these higher LTV ratios and thus make taking loans on your bitcoin a better option than it is today.

The delivery person receives money for every delivered letter and every delivered letter is delivered in the same envelope and looks the same to them, spam or not. So they just deliver it for the money. Imagine every letter that is sent to you looks the same and is in the same envelope. Now pick and choose what to accept and what not to accept.
The postal worker shows up at your door for delivery and some spam that gets delivered you can throw away and some spam that gets delivered you have to store and keep forever. Because some spam has a marking on it that says you can throw it away while other "spam" you can't prove is spam and might be an important letter, so you have to keep it forever. I'd imagine you'd prefer to receive spam you can throw away.

I agree, I think patents definitely favor large corporations more than small businesses. A lot of corporations simply have defensive patents, not for the sake of actually producing a product of their own, but to prevent other companies from producing a competing product. But I certainly can see a benefit toward small start ups with a unique product idea trying to make it to market against larger companies. Perhaps make patents only last a year or two rather than the decade plus they last now?

One defense of patents is hear is that a smaller business with a new idea never has a chance to compete against a large conglomerate that can just steal their ideas and use their immense resources to scale and make it to market faster. I don't have any good answers either way, but I can understand that argument. A lot of good arguments against patents as well.

Borrowers go underwater on their traditional loans with banks all the time. If the bank is that risk averse, then can always set tight margin call values, but it really isn't necessary to require such low LTV ratios at origination with such pristine collateral like bitcoin.

It baffles me there are people that want any sizable portion of the bitcoin network running on knots. It isn't just about code review either. Knots has one dev/maintainer. This means you could potentially have one single dev with the ability to push out a code change that people running knots will blindly install upon new release.
Imagine if 50%+ of the bitcoin network were running Knots with one person having the ability to maintain the code of all those nodes. That is a scary proposition and it is insane to me that there are bitcoiners promoting that idea.
Imagine a backdoor in all those nodes or a breaking code change. Yes, many would catch the change and not push said new release to their nodes, but many would. Yes, it would very quickly become breaking news for all to urgently hear in the community. But that's not the point. That's not how you maintain the codebase for a multi-trillion dollar monetary network. You don't have one maintainer for a critical codebase like this.
It isn't one person "standing on the backs of giants." It is one person with control.

It does matter. If the attacker doesn't have access to the blind oracle server (it was taken offline/deleted) then it could be argued that a HWW with a secure element intact would be the easier target than the Jade HWW without a corresponding blind oracle. Since what would be needed to perform an attack is in hand with the secure element HWW versus the now deleted blind oracle with the Jade.
Obviously this would depend upon knowing that your Jade was stolen to begin with to be able to respond in kind with deleting your blind oracle server to begin with.
But my argument wasn't that one is better than the other as often in security it isn't so black and white. I was merely presenting a specific attack path where having a separate blind oracle could present a more difficult challenge than a secure element.

I mean, ya, stealing a hardware wallet AND also the oracle server is obviously a SHTF scenario. But that's also not a hurdle (stealing an external server) an attacker would need to go through for hardware wallets using a secure element. There are trade-offs for everything when it comes to security. Finding the balance for your own personal use case and risk tolerance is important.

One benefit I could see is that if you host your own oracle server and you lose your hardware wallet, you could take your oracle server offline preventing any access to that data and forever deleting it. Or limit access to your self-hosted oracle server to begin with. But yes, this would only be possible if you're hosting your own blind Oracle PIN server, which I would highly recommend if using a Jade wallet.

A bitcoin node still downloads and validates all transactions and blocks, even if pruning is enabled. And if you set up your node to track your wallet history, it will store those transactions even if they're past the prune period.

Haha, no intention of sending you there, though it does often sound nice.
It was actually just an honest question though that I've asked myself just as often.
I'm also a big proponent of privacy improvements on the blockchain and someday it would be great to have privacy improvements where it is difficult or impossible to tell what exactly a transaction is (things like schnorr sig and taproot help). If we someday get there and all data looks the same, telling the difference between "spam" and "legit" will be a fruitless endeavour.

You may not have an answer to that question and that's fine. But the position you hold (reduce spam) absolutely depends on an answer to that question, which in reality doesn't have a good answer.

It didn't. Ocean and DATUM is the answer for how you decentralize mining more and move toward allowing individual miners select their own block templates. It doesn't answer the question of: when choosing your own block template (as an individual miner or pool) how do you selectively choose what data is good or bad if all txn data looks the same? In a similar vain, the same question can be asked about relaying transactions and whether ultimately it is better to have a more restrictive default txn relay network with many more private ones and unpredictable blocks.
