The Exploratorium is a world class hands-on science museum in San Francisco. The color science exhibits are truly flawless. There have always been gender fumes present in the building (there is a super weird exhibit that mentions Chelsea Manning), but nothing terribly overt.
I went there today to see this stuff. I told the kids at the front desk that this is insane and harmful to kids.
Apparently sex *is* binary, but gender uses the same categories...and sex isn't always determined by your chromosomes (it is, always no matter who you are).

Did anyone read this report "Systematic Medical Evidence Review of Hormonal Transgender Treatment Report" for Utah's state legislature? It's a big systematic review for "gender affirming care" and the authors come to the conclusion that GAC is good (in contrast to the state legislature which had banned it).

I know GAC is not good, but took a look at the report to try and see how the authors came to this conclusion. It's very long (1000+ pages, mostly paper summaries), and I don't want to invest that much time in looking for all the flies in the ointment...but a number of flies pop up immediately:
The report was late by 6 months. That's...odd....The report was commissioned by contract, people cut off their right hand to ensure reports are not handed in a minute late past a contract deadline. There are 5 instances in the report of the authors describing their "abbreviated timeline" as an excuse for any potential quality issues with their work. This is very weird.
>The conventional wisdom among non-experts has long been that there are limited data on the use of GAHT in pediatric patients with GD. However, results from our exhaustive literature searches have led us to the opposite conclusion.
What? Though many serious people knew for a fact that the evidence has always been very poor, the Cass report that cemented this fact was received quite controversially by "non-experts".
>We were not contracted to include a synthesis of the evidence that we found: only to assess [risks of bias] and provide evidence tables summarizing safety and efficacy findings. However, after having spent many months searching for, reading, and evaluating the available literature, it was impossible for us to avoid drawing some high-level conclusions.
...it is very odd for a report to discuss something that wasn't contracted for. Government contracting is usually quite strict, this type of writing indicates shenanigans.
They don't cite Cass (at least I can't find "Cass" in there). I do not know how a credible systematic review written after Cass wouldn't compare and contrast their findings to Cass.
I am not experienced in writing systematic reviews but I would presume this report should show some glaring deficiencies.

I was recently trying to debunk the often heard debt fear-mongering that comes from politicians. This must be Graeber's most succinct summary of the matter:

It also made me think a bit more about bitcoin. I don't get bitcoin most of the time. I don't understand why enthusiasts believe that apolitical money (that is premised on the capital investments that go into energy, silicon fabrication etc. etc. that is controlled by political money) will ever really be allowed. How the US has slowly allowed greater legitimacy to bitcoin despite it largely being used for human trafficking and drugs (and that according to the long time CEO of America's biggest bank).
Graber's summary gave me an idea: our money system is complicated (at least in part) because it makes it difficult for normies to understand. The basic mechanism behind bitcoin is actually fairly easy to understand. Perhaps it is its understandability that is taken as a serious threat...and thus, allowed to live to a certain degree.

I don't see how that is true. There is no reason exclude the idea that the development path to lesbianism may (in some or all women) pass through a (perhaps short not memorable) bipotential critical point before an irreversible step. We aren't very good at telling which children grow up to be bisexual or homosexual adults, we largely don't know how this development happens. Testimony from those adults is important, but doesn't give us a clear picture and subject to well known limitations.
Attraction and conscious choice are very very difficult probe and investigate in adults (forget about children) and much is unknown. We know sexual orientation is stable in adults, but it would be wrong to dismiss the testimony of adults that claim to have chosen their sexual orientation because we have such a fuzzy picture as to how this (and many other) behavior emerges.

My expression is linked to the idea that I generally feel quite powerless to change much around me (in a socio political sense), I do wonder how anyone does anything. I sometimes like to think of small single issues that one could make a social campaign off of for some reason, "don't watch sports" seems concise and controversial enough that it could catch on.

A social movement I could get behind: do not watch sports. At all. Do exercise/sports and do not watch them. Not in stadiums not on TV or anything.
Watching sports comes with all sorts of mindlessness that is bad for you. It's prepackaged with advertising for products you don't need. Alcohol is a big part of sports watching. There is a strange sort of oppressive conformity with the marked up branded sports team clothing. T shirt printing companies seem to work very hard at screening what you can print, probably mostly because of sports. Kinda makes you feel bad because it's hard to compare yourself to a few people that have physical attributes that are so unimaginably greater than yours they may as well be a different species.
Don't watch sports. They are bad for you.

I fear I am getting into the flavor extract game. I made this "kue lapis" (layered mochi) with alternating flavors of saffron, pandan (powdered form) and kaffir lime. I have the texture down with just enough tapioca flour to stiffen the glutinous rice.
My flavors could not punch though (though I used what, in other contexts, would too much). It feels like they need to be 3X-6X more, I think I can only get there with concentrate/extracts.
I do want to try making a layer with a strawberry reduction, but if this really worked, I would have guessed someone would have made it by now.

The H1B maga civil war and BS jobs.
Companies in America prefer an apparently competent person from another country vs. a graduate from a domestic 3rd tier computer science program. The reality is that both of these people will probably be doing a bullshit job. The person from the other country is, probably, more competent (has to justify doing the job to the government) and will have a harder time going to a competitor/another job in the US.
There would be a more interesting discussion to have if we started with the premise that most of these jobs are bullshit jobs and I think would reveal a lot of the underlying interests driving the "debate".

It's like a layer of obfuscation around immigration has been torn off in the public debate across the world. You can really see it in Canada which used to really love lots of fluffy happy language around it.
I think there are defensible positions against H1-Bs. It's not slavery, people are free to not apply for them, but it does raise questions for the average person as to how all this works. I.e., why do we have these programs in the most powerful nation on earth with the best schools that should just be able to make more, say, software engineers the way India can?
I think the reality is the knobs that control the number of software engineers being produced in India vs. the number in America and the number that come here is a decision made by just a few people and is largely obfuscated to the public. It seems like some complicated game between global powers..."fine, you make more software engineers, we'll let some come here so you can buy more of our stuff...don't descend into war because that will cost me as well, I also don't want any crazy terrorist acts...I'm going to keep putting my investments into natural gas fracking and ensuring my companies have a foot print in your country..."

It may just be my own skill issue, but I want to say that it takes at least two years of pretty serious training on any typical instrument (piano, guitar etc.) to be merely tolerable in a casual sing along setting w friends.
Anyone can pick up a paint brush and stick what they made on their wall and often feel genuinely good about it.
