No, OpenAI's new magic models did not autonomously hack Huggingface.
Per OpenAI's PR blog post (https://openai.com/index/hugging-face-model-evaluation-security-incident/):
"This incident occurred during an internal evaluation which prompts models to pursue advanced exploitation using complex attack paths, in an effort to quantify their cyber capabilities. We estimate maximal cyber capabilities by running this evaluation without production classifiers used to prevent models from pursuing high-risk cyber activity."
So they prompted their model running without guardrails to hack some shit. OpenAI told it to do that, the model didn't do shit autonomously (no LLM ever does anything autonomously, it's always prompted).
The whole story is PR. We know that from Anthopic's Mythos: "Look we have this super secret new model and it's so powerful. We are scared ourselves. And you will soon be able to rent it!"

SpaceX's rockets don't work but they claim that their potential revenue is higher than the US federal budget. But they cheated their way into Nasdaq and other indices so big pension funds etc will start buying the stock and after a few months when the insiders can sell their stock it will take a dump. But nobody can do anything because of how Musk set up the company.

In Yesterday's IO Keynote Google declared war on the remnants of the Web.
While they packaged it as a lot of "AI" talk what their whole approach of decontextualizing information, of taking away links to sources and instead producing some LLM generated response means is that they want to establish a new abstraction layer on the web. Where Zuckerberg with his Metaverse failed Google is starting the next attack: Your website, your work no longer matters.
Well it matters as (unpaid) raw material for their synthetic text extruders but not as cultural artifact you can share with others.
This is a literal revolution but one against the participatory web, against us: The goal is to take away the web and guide people into Google's abstraction on top of it. An abstraction they control and moderate. It's about monopolizing access to information.
If you care about the web, about people's ability to participate in it as more than mere passive consumers, this needs to be taken seriously. De-Googlifying your mental apparatus becomes more urgent today. Find other search engines, don't use their browser. Or wake up in a slopified AOL kind of environment.

@nprofile…m0rx It is fantastic. I use the Open Source Firmware and it works beautifully.
I don't use it to read long papers of texts that I want to annotate (it does not have that functionality) but I have gotten to spending my lunch breaks reading fiction books (currently going through Ursula K. Le Guin's works) instead of staring at the phone.
The reader is so small that I just have it in my coat pocket all the time. The battery lasts forever.

I never understood why people do not want to know stuff or understand stuff or be able to do stuff.
Sure nobody wants to know/understand/be able to do _everything_ but the current "LLM does t all, I just prod it" is super alien to me.

@nprofile…wt4z I really like the idea. But I draw a line at giving money to fascists. Among other things. I draw a lot of lines. Look like a crazy person at times TBH.

With my day job being a bit ... in trouble (company is not me as a person) I keep looking at whether I should try to do a PhD.
Which is a massively dumb idea that I should not follow up on cause it would not work and I'd just hate myself.
If I mention it again, please punch me over TCP/IP.
