We have two new open calls for financial and practical support to free and open source technology R&D.
This summer we transitioned from the Next Generation Internet to the Open Internet Stack, both initiatives of the European Commission.
Much will stay the same. The granting mechanism has the same offerings and requirements as before, and the new programs will continue to offer a wide range of freely available support services.
Deadline for applications is November 3.

In March #Heliboard asked people to help gather gesture data to implement a #FOSS alternative to the closed gesture typing library Heliboard currently relies on. Since then over 700.000(!) examples were submitted. The new 4.0 release includes opt-in background data gathering in the hopes to collect 2 million examples by November. The European Commission has issued a survey on the Governance and Sustainability of Critical Open Source Software.
The survey hopes to identify "pathways for collective efforts" and make "actionable recommendations for public administrations".
It's a relatively short survey, takes max 15 minutes & provides lots of opportunities to rate FOSS as 'very important' 😛

badkeys is an open source tool to check cryptographic keys for known vulnerabilities. Its developer @npub1syu…3cq9 gave a talk at German OWASP Day where he discussed how old bugs never die. He tested for the Debian OpenSSL bug discovered in 2008 & found hundreds of DKIM setups still vulnerable. Vulnerable hosts included prominent names like Cisco, Oracle, Skype, and Github. But he sees even older vulns including one which is over 300 years old.

And yes, NGI0 and NLnet are closely linked. NGI Zero is a coalition of non-profits running the NGI0 programmes (see all coalition partners in our bio) and NLnet is part of the coalition. And NLnet runs this Mastodon account. You've made me realize that is not very clear so I've now adjusted the bio to reflect that.

Thanks for pointing that out, hadn't seen it yet. They make good additional recommendations besides continuing the NGI initiative. Like considering additional support mechanisms specifically for software maintenance and - very important - promote the adoption of open source technologies by public administrations and private enterprises.
