William Lindsay's daily threads are good roundups of the history that is unfolding around us as a small group of compromised and deeply unwell narcissists kill people through intent, neglect, cruelty, glee, and sheer ignorance.
I'm hoping Trump's presidency ends soon and I'm hoping that his legacy will be a general and lasting rejection of populism in all its guises.
But I am not optimistic in the least about that. I believe that the US political system has been too compromised by manipulation and corruption to ever be something like that.
But at the very least, it would be good to get the killing to stop. With the USAID cuts, the wars and the persecution of immigrants, this administration has ended the lives of 100,000s of people. They rank amongst the worst people I've ever seen govern in my lifetime. And they are the worst Americans by far.

So what happens is that everyone votes yes to her fantasy world - becasue, sure those sound great! - and then she goes to try to implement them and she runs into things like The Constitution and a lack of willing provinces who want to amend it, and then she says "see Canada doesn't work for us, maybe we should leave" and everyone goes yeah. And then they try that and it doesn't work either. And then what? I don't know. They're out of ideas and they create an Alberta People's Liberation Front and the People's Front of Alberta and then just die a slow death from grievance stress, perpetual splitters, cigarettes and too many garage beers.

At least - rationalization incoming - we fund needed services from that investment income rather than sending consumer dollars into the system. Investment is not the same as economic activity, as we know. Spending money is what makes an economy function. Extracting dividends builds wealth, and the CPP is our collective, people-owned, wealth fund.

I think some do. I think actual conservatives value community, they value tradition, they value economic liberalism, small businesses, freedom and responsibility. I think they value charity and the care about folks who need help and support.
Even the populists you mention miss community.
There are cruel people out there and they are manipulated through culture wars by crueler ones to either shill for or furiously oppose billionaires. And that fight benefits billionaires.
Our collective job as citizens is to connect. We don’t have to agree. But we have to do things like help each other dig out our driveways and build affordable housing. And we can find a lot of common ground for holding power to account if we remember who our real, collective enemy is.
And I’m not naive. I’ve been saying this for 25 years, mocked by many along the way. But I’m fucking right about this. And I’ll go to my grave trying to figure it out.

for sure. I’m honestly wondering right now what ordinary people think they will have if they joined the US that will better than what they have now beyond “no MorE LiBErAls”.
They will live in towns in which many people including friends and family had left to go elsewhere in Canada. Their government will be a territory not a state and the US federal government would simply give away the resources leases to companies with no royalties.
They will lose public health care and a decent k-12 education system. They will see many economic immigrants arrive in the territory to work the resources at lower wages than they have now.
It is so obvious that a move like this only benefits very big offshore resource companies and fatally slices the heart out of Canada.
So I’m honestly interested in why people feel this is a great idea.
Grievance will go with them but then they will be completely powerless. It’s foolish.

They can get more oil in North Dakota or Alaska or Texas or Dubai if that’s what they want. these are evil men. But I don’t think that gives an excuse to let “prison justice” run its course. Letting people be murdered in prison is not the justice system flex folks think it is.
We have so normalized rationalizing extra judicial murder that it is now seen as a feature of a system of deterrence. And that sucks as a moral ground to repair a society that dehumanizes everyone including and especially the children who are the victims of sexual violence and murder.

two felt earthquakes in a couple of weeks is pretty unusual. The last ones I remember feeling was a “truck hit my building” quake in 1995 and the Nisqually quake in 2000.
but, having said that, I have earthquake kits at home and in my car and emergency plans for the big one, and anyone who comes to stay at my house for a night or more gets shown where all the emergency supplies are. If they’re not from the region, they consider this surprising. I consider a kindness.

the line that won it for Trump I think was “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?”
A combination of real struggle along with misinformation (because inflation is actually over now but prices are not coming down) and algorithms pumping echo chambers helps to get a “no” to that question.
Harris needed to start with “no”. Same with the Liberals. But it is their record they will run on. Hard to defend against a simple no.

Governments can indeed burden their citizens with fiscal hardship which can be recovered through prudent governance. We cannot recover by punting a degraded environment, a warming climate and shredded public services down the line without incredibly stringent emergency measures being taken at huge cost.
We govern with an eye to the immediate present populist sentiment at our deep peril. Many will be hurt. Many more. Including the people who thought this might all be a good idea.
