Few birds are large enough to fill the frame with a 105mm macro lens. But this hungry hunting heron was up to the task and even obliged with the low angle.

This jay kept trying to get onto the feeder, but it was too heavy and it would almost tip the feeder over. Then it seemed to figure out that if it landed hard enough, the feeder would tip enough to spill the seeds onto the ground, where it could then chase away the Mourning doves and eat the seeds. I mostly just liked the blurred colors in the background.

A Red-shouldered hawk flew overhead and the peafowl started vocalizing their cautionary call and this one flew up into a tree and did a pretty good job of blending in.

Cottontails are easier to photograph than birds, but since I’m unaccustomed to it, I feel self-conscious about it. Like I’ve never seen two rabbits before.

Some of my youth clients are hesitant to engage because of their unresolved trauma and grief but it’s my job to keep showing up. Today one of my quiet high schoolers who’d always been polite but never wanted to talk, told me about a house he built. He took me to the backyard of his foster home and pointed at a bird feeder. There was a House finch on it and a couple of Rock pigeons on the ground below it. He said “my friends are here.”

Something like this is pretty easy with the 600mm, but has a slightly different look in the 105 macro because of the depth of field and detail in the face. This was at f13, 1/80. Wish I had just a little more shutter speed.

Every once in awhile, I see posts that make me curious about what’s happening in mastodon or the fediverse, but I usually give up because it feels like I’m missing important context. Regardless of all that, I like this site and it’s too complicated to move away to something else. I love birds and I love photography. What I share is free because birds are free and people should be free too.

With birds that travel in large groups (parrots, waxwings), it can sometimes be useful to look for the stragglers. Usually a couple of birds stick around after the group has moved on and it creates a good opportunity for a photo. Also much quieter.

I’m glad I drive a hybrid, but gas near the Arboretum is $0.50 cheaper ($5.19) so I trekked out there. I stopped by the Arboretum since I was in the area. I’m pretty sure the Allen’s hummingbird isn’t in support of the war either, unless it’s an air war against other male hummingbirds.

It is an incredible privilege to do what I do. I am aware that not everyone has the resources or opportunities to go out and find birds and take photos of them. I take this seriously and do what I can to be a good steward of the abilities I’ve been given; and to share them as a reminder that the earth is a beautiful place that’s worth fighting for.
