I think using Positron is growing on me. Some of the keybindings are not intuitive (like commenting code), but the #RStats completion and LSP works better than my #Emacs setup when I'm using my #Guix time-machine.
Positron was very bad, but since version: 2026.07.1 build 5 (Code - OSS 1.118.0) many of those rough edges are resolved.
I just wish @npub1e58…ey66 was releasing it as Flatpak or snap as well.

Thanks for pointing them out. Then they should have updated their website. I didn't pull these statements out of thin air. All links were provided. So inaccuracy does not at all fall on me, but rather on the Sailfish official website.
I also checked the links. None are OpenSource. They are at best SourceAvailable Proprietary software. (check the LICENSE file): https://github.com/sailfishos/jolla-camera

Well, the whole core is Linux and Linux utils. Nothing that Jolla have developed themselves. These are already on 99+% of all linux desktop and laptops and has nothing to do with #SailfishOS nor #Jolla.
Don't quote me on this, but I believe even legally Jolla cannot even make them not OpenSource due to the licensing of these software.
As far as I understand, Jolla's Browser and Office are the only things that Jolla voluntarily have OpenSourced.

And why trust matters? Because @npub1xrs…qupw is marketing itself as "European Sovereignty" solution provider. It is written on every page of them website, it is tagged in all their social media posts,...
Also, imho, being/moving towards FLOSS (Free and Libre OpenSource Software) paradigm also helps adjusting the community's attitude.
I truely hope they embrace the FLOSS and at least OpenSource the apps that users are directly interacting with.

Just a comment about the OpenSource part: in rough terms, SailfishOS consist of 4 parts:
1. The Linux core and other Linux related software like Pulseaudio
2. The hardware drivers and compatibility layer that Jolla has written
3. The window manager and compositor
4. The apps
The 1st one is OpenSource, not thanks to @npub1xrs…qupw , but because they are developed by others and Jolla is just using them. 2&3 are important bits that are not OpenSource. 4 has only two OpenSource apps!

So not only it is mot OpenSource, it is not even close to being OpenSource. The Linux bit is, but everything on top of it that makes it a phone is not.
So why being OpenSource matters? Because @npub1xrs…qupw is a super tiny company (compared to Google and Apple) and they don't have a fleet of developers to keep an eye on every corner of the project. Making it OpenSource means more eyes can be on the code which improves security, safety, and longevity. It also brings trust.

I have been observing the #SailfishOS and @npub1xrs…qupw community for some weeks. It is "interesting" how they are treating newcomers [1,2]. There are way more examples, but well, character limits🤷
This is the textbook definition of gatekeeping. What they should do instead is to create a hashtag or something, so that new-commers tag themselves and gray-beards with zero tolerance can block that hashtag. Instead it is turning into reverse trolling.

Imho it is waste of time and waste of energy, and ultimately wrong to oppose AI (as technology) blindly and bluntly. There are quite major environmental and economical issues that needs to be addressed, but insisting on adopting it correctly (in correct use-case) and responsibly (environmental, ethical, legal, etc.) is the actual way forward, not bluntly hating it. This is the classic "knife" issue. In right hands it saves lives, and in wrong hands it takes lives. We should educate users.

I believe every data file format should also have a comment syntax, both line comments and inline comments.
TOML and YAML both support #, but two of the most common data formats, CSV and JSON don't. At least for CSV it is commonly accepted to consider # for CSV and // for JSON as comment, but we really need to standardize this for both these formats.

Yes guix stire can get pretty big pretty fast. To be fair, I don't use guix for daily applications. Almost exclusively I use it for time machine for my projects. So things that are there are static (no newer versions are getting installed) and they should stay and not get garbage collected, apart from Guile and Guix things that I frequently update.

Ended up with 120MB disk space for the root partition on my computer. Uninstalling a couple of Flatpaks gave me back roughly 2GB, running `guix gc` freed up 1GB, and running `pacman -Sc` freed up ... whopping 26GB 🫤
I should have rtfm and setup systemd timer for paccache
I should write in gold and bold on my wall "in the ArchWiki we trust"!

As a side-note, I kinda disagree with any classic dimensionally reduction method such as PCA or tSNE to be considered as machine learning. But apart from that, this is a very neat figure. I'll try to fit it into some of my spides for future presentations.

One of the main use-cases if narrowing and indirect buffer for me is to ediff two parts of the same file.
I also use narrowing to change the major mode. For example when I get an email with some code snippets, I narrow to the code and change the major mode to read the code with proper syntax highliting and code navigation bindings.

I gave a [very] short presentation about reproducible analysis environment using #Guix and @npub1rt6…rclc covered #Nix and {rix} for #RStats.
Although it was a short talk, I was surprised how many people came forward to discuss reproducibility in #EuroBioc2026 conference.
This is a good testament to the will of the community to adapt more robust and reproducible analysis environment.

Tax is to benefit the society as a whole, yes, so we pay tax so that airport and highways are built/maintained although not everyone necessarily use them. But this is about removal of a service rather than adding/maintaining one. It is like bicycle lanes or blind-friendly pavements. Not everyone in the society rides bike or is blind, but we all collectively (and happily) contributing via tax. #Finland discontinuing English content on national media is analogous to removing bike lanes!

Everyone who work and live in #Finland has to pay YLE (national TV and radio) tax. I don't consume Finnish content (time, interest, language barrier), and my only "reliable" source of Finnish news was YLE English daily news podcast. Now they are taking that away, which begs the question: what am I paying for?
Needless to say that the entire English podcast was 5 minutes a day (yes you read it right!) and it was of super poor quality.

#TIL by accident that #Emacs has a built-in dictionary. I was using all CPU cores of my PC and couldn't afford opening a web browser, but I was reviewing a manuscript and my Emacs was also open. I went out on a limp and tried `M-x dictionary` and there it was, the glorious `dictionary-search` and `dictionary-lookup-definition`.

Does anyone know how to pass a PNG or JPG from R to stdout? At the moment I'm creating a tempfile and returning the filename, but that's suboptimal and makes the code less clear.
R has `stdout()` but none of the `png()` or `jpg()` support writing to connection.

For the first time ever, I'm now rooting for AI to take away job of certain people. Where I work has Office365 and the only 2FA they have enabled are SMS and Microsoft Authenticator. I have Yubikey, we all have passkeys, but no, these geniuses in IT are insisting on the insecure SMS and proprietary Microsoft Authenticator, and they are asking me to install it on my **personal phone**. I refused and asked for FLOSS option, and this is what they sent me after 5 days. Direct copy-pasta from AI!

Thanks for your comment. I upgraded through the KDE Discover, and I believe there was no alert/warning of such.
Alas, damage is unfortunately done, both to the configs and to my confidence in Fedora. Luckily this computer is not my daily driver, and the customizations were minimal (for terminal, screenshot, and various Emacs commands).
You are right, perhaps it's either time to change the distro or write some code to enforce certain minimal settings.

I just updated my #Fedora (43 -> 44) and it wiped all my custom Kwin keybindings 🤦at this point, I'm having more trouble with Fedora upgrades than Arch, and that's either a testament on how stable Arch is during updates, or how untested the Fedora is, or both!
This is the first time years that I am Forced to setup the custom keybindings again! It is truly hurtful.

In the time-machine, the commit for each channel is pinned, and it doesn't build any derivative when I load the environment, but loading is not instantaneous. It takes up to 15 seconds to get the environment ready despite of nothing changing in the profile or manifest or channel.

Thanks for the explanation. Apart from the building derivative, the part that takes most time (and is actually annoyingly slow) is starting guix time-machine. All my projects at work are using Guix time-machine and direnv (as explained in the following blog post), and every time I need to switch project, I have to wait for it to "load". Do you happen to know how that can be sped up?

A question for all #Guix folks on fedi: is there a way to make building the derivations faster? The machine I use has 20 cores, and only one of them is used 100% and the rest are usually around 7-8%.
There are many things that needs updating on my machine (including guix, pacman, flatpak, Emacs packages, ...) and by far Guix is the slowest despite having:

These sounds too unrealistic to me. First off, bordering countries are themselves either corrupt (e.g., Iraq), hardliner (e.g., Afghanistan), double agent (e.g., Turkey, Azerbaijan), or show-off (e.g., Pakostan). None of them have the back bone to allow/support such things.

The issue is not connectivity of people inside the country. There are numerous @npub1m9z…whzq and @npub17gp…nrxn relays. The issue is connecting these services to wold-wide web. Iran gov have made a "national internet" (a.k.a., intranet) and there are "national" services analogous to WhatsApp, Youtube, ... and also banking and other stuff works. Of course their security and privacy standards are a major concern. I'm sure soon people will start using a ton or i2p as well.

1. Pezeshkian is the head of the council. Not just a member, the head!

His own Ministry of Telecommunications is the one who have blocked the internet. He cannot cry wolf when he is the one letting wolf take the herd. If he cannot stand against the corrupt part (assuming he is not corrupt himself), he should simply abide by his own promise during election and resign.
For many, if not the absolute majority, reform and revolutionary are two sides of the same corrupt coin.

The internet blackout for ordinary people not only means their voice have been cut short, but also they don't have access to the news. People consume whatever the gov broadcast to them. This means gradually people get more and more brainwashed.
Even in Gaza there was (and is not) any internet blackouts. That's actually how European Gaza supporters get their news and updates. Now imagine if there was a blackout. Well you don't need to imagine, Iran is now in that state.

So why did I say that the #Iran government is selling this? It is because any user have to buy a normal internet subscription (what we all buy and pay for in western countries), but this onpy give you access to intrAnet (local internet within the country whoch give you access to banks and gov websites but no server or website outside of the country). Then user has to pay a very hefty price for 5GB of tiered-internet! So the gov is practically double-dipping!

What "tiered internet" (a.k.a. "Internet Pro") mean: any person should fill forms and apply for this access. Based on your profession, only certain websites will be whitelisted. The tiers are defined based on the professional union you belong to. For example, as a researcher, YouTube will be whitelisted (pubmed for example is not mention!!). If you are businessman's, WhatsApp and Telegram will be whitelisted. Reporters would get WhatsApp, Telegram, Instargam,...

If at some point teachers are protesting or having a union strike, #Iran government will be able to specifically target this particular group and cut all their accesses. This means that
1. There will be benign strikes or no strike at all and gov will be happy
2. The effect of the strikes will be very very minor, and gov and society will not get affected

Rhese are the keyboards I use regularly with my devices that have Emacs on them:
- normal 100% keyboard ISO Nordic layout
- Lenovo laptop ISO Nordic layout
- MacBook ANSI layout
The only things I've changed in all of them is mapping CapsLock to Ctrl

One of the reasons that emacs appealed to me was that it didn't have modal editing and arbitrary keybindings. I was a vim user for about 5 years and always had logical issues with vim bindings from mnemonic perspective. I used Doom Emacs for about a year and loved how easy it is to config, and after that I started my own Emacs config from scratch using Emacs-style keybindings. I tend to keep the default bindings but sometimes I change them around.

I don't know the answer. I also for a brief moment had this question, but soon realized I don't care 😅 What's important is the openness of scientific research done in academia.
It is also possible that journals retaliate by banning my university from their journals, but that also a waste of breath imho. The fact that they get paid for doing absolutely nothing regarding the article and science is already a big issue.

According to the rector decision in my university, the university library will put all research articles under CC license and making it publicly available regardless of the journal!
This is an amazing news that promotes better research practices imho. I'm super glad that my university is taking these measures towards open and accessible science.

No, neither the internet connection nor the telephone connection are restored. telephone connection is only allowed from inside to outside, and sometimes the quality is so bad that you cannot figure out what the other person says. I'm pretty sure the phones are tapped and fully surveilled.
Some of those who are completely cut-off from world-wide news are starting to believe the gov's narrative, as it is the only source of info they have! Something needs to be done and fast!

I'm not against AI usage in music, and I really like this song, the lyrics, and thb the female voice and technique. But just knowing that this lyrics could easily be performed by A Jazz/Blues singer, and yet the authors went for AI has kinda de-valued it to some extent for me.

Interesting and at the same time annoying that you don't really see the 5th option. But this is kinda expected from general American: only seeing Americans as "people" and the rest of the humanity are negligible factor.
A friendly suggestion:
Think again, and this time see what potentially important factor have been neglected in those 4 options.

3. Posting about war quickly turns into a political post, which depending on being pro/anti gov, can cost you your life (read the news about arrests and executions).
4. Sometimes you should pause for a second and think "why some, if not a majority, would rather tolerate the war if it leads to freedom". Really, think about it for a second.
(Before internet people jumping me, I said "lead to" not "brings"!)

Few points to consider in general:
1. You should have lived and experienced the situation in Iran to understand the logic. So don't judge when you don't know what it takes.
2. When there is an internet blackout, no one can hear what people inside really think about the situation. The only strong narrative that is reflected outside _from inside_ is the government-controlled narrative.

Some years back I tried Tridactyl firefox extension[1]. By default it uses vim bindings, but there are config files to make it have Emacs bindings[2].
It worked relatively well.
Also, perhaps have a look at the Nyxt browser [3] which is written in Common Lisp and has built-in Emacs keybinding support.

If some package or config works well, it can be moved to main one.
My OSs are Arch and Fedora Kinoite, DE is KDE Plasma. I have configured Emacs bindings in some other applications like Zathura, imv, and I sometimes use Nyxt browser which natively supports most Emacs bindings. In my KDE Plasma I also have bound Super+Shift+e to open dired as my file manager 🤓

I'm _relatively new_ Emacs user as I've been using it only for about 4 years, and started my own config about 3 years ago.
My config is imho very clean, easy to understand, and maintainable.
My approach is to keep the default bindings as much as possible, try not to use packages that are diverging from Emacs style of things. The config also loads a private config folder that I do my testings there.

To clarify my point, reporting something is not in any shape or form an objection. In this article they have "reported" _some_ humand rights violations, and they have reported internet blackout. If this is objection or condemnation, then @npub1pn6…wgvu have been doing a far far better job than OHCHR, and more accurately I should add.
I would like to acknowledge the **actual condemnation** Netblocks does in absolute majority of their posts.

That article is trying to hammer the issue of "arbitrary detentions and other forms of State repression" across all middle eastern countries, which is fully off-topic of internet blackout and communication cuts.

Based on your post, it seems to me that you think this #Iran internet blackout a new one-off phenomenon. Perhaps this Wikipedia article can help clarifying the situation:

a) there have been discussions about this at least since 2008 [1]
b) everyone (on mailing list, StackExchange, Reddit, ...) suggest Drew Adams' packages [2] such as Icicles and thingatpt+ but I couldn't find them in MELPA
