OK first off, the USSR never had a universal basic income. They were just a tyrannical regime who devoted the government toward giving asspats to their buddies in the inner circle. They were the Republican Party, calling themselves communist. Every time a UBI has *actually* been implemented, it's worked great, with not one single kulak sent to the gulag.
Secondly, currency does not work that way. The government just prints money. It doesn't spend taxes. Tax dollars are effectively just money burned, in order to limit inflation. So no, there's no risk of being "unable" to pay a UBI. The only consideration should be how much money to print in order to maximize quality of life for the country. Anyone expecting to be paid back at the expense of that is delusional.
So a UBI would not make it where the poor cannot eat properly. It would just switch the dynamic so sellers have to react to increased wages, rather than wage increases reacting (with a delay) behind price hikes by sellers. That delay is stolen money, and a UBI would end that theft.
Personally I think that it's ridiculous to make it so the criteria for "who starves to death" is how much money you have. So food shouldn't cost money. We can figure out other ways to decide who gets the food produced.
But if you *must* sell food, for money, then a UBI has (in every case) been shown to improve things overall. It's the difference between a billionaire having "literally infinity times" the buying power of someone with no income, to "only a billion times" the buying power. Poor people might see prices rise, but they already have $0 to pay for anything, so it doesn't matter how high or low the price is.

Local clubs might help, but that licensing... it's the biggest obstacle to me at least. Turns into the purity olympics, where people try to assert what meager power they have been allowed by our benevolent overlords, with silly rituals like "Breaker Breaker 19." People get mad at you for using radio "unprofessionally" and absolutely every licensed CB radio operator is on a very short list of dangerous individuals who need extra surveillance.
I mean, I'm making it out to be worse than it is, and any culture will have their peculiarities and etiquette. CB radio is ...fine, but compare it with pirate radio. There's really no contest.

OK first, The Tragedy of the Commons is the assumption that poor people (being inferior to the rich) will waste their resources squabbling over it out of greed. It says nothing about who should, or should not breed. Only that the poors can't be trusted with wealth, conveniently obligating the wealthy to take it all.
Second, when you say "The one thing we don't really need is more humans," that is eugenics. You can't express your opinion that people should be having fewer babies, without deciding who should and shouldn't breed. I wasn't going to accuse you of being a Nazi, but I did want to point out that personal choice goes out the window, when you are making decisions for the good of all. People like to deny that, as if their choice to stop shopping at BigMartCorp will mystically translate to other people doing it.
Not all collective action is fascism, even if you make judgements about other people's actions, and seek to regulate them.

Usenet was like that, except forums could federate their articles, and their targeted selection of groups depended on what er... groups they were willing to host. People started getting spammed though, and started protecting themselves using PGP to recognize each other and avoid spammers. And the corporates were like "ohhhh no," and went full disinfo campaign to get people to not do that.
Independent unfederated web forums were sort of a coping mechanism for that pressure. Something that sorta worked, and didn't threaten the corporate hegemony, so corporates tolerated it, because they could take their time scheming how to destroy forums without any risk of anyone stopping them. That's when they started promoting MySpace then Facebook, and everything went predictably downhill from there.
And yeah IRC outlived both Usenet and Web Forums, but then got killed by Discord.
That's been my experience at least.

It bears a whole lot of resemblance to the model from neural networks! Neurons resist conducting electricity, but have a threshold of electrical stimulation, after which their synapses become rapidly conductive, something called action potential. Which is the definition of a transistor: a resistor that transforms!
Transistors are how computers compute, so it's pretty impressive how close neurons come to that model. It's just necessary for our brains to function, that they resemble a computer, or specifically a highly interconnected transistor network. Or uh, "neural network." The same reason computers work is the reason we can think thoughts!
But yeah, every cell is a vast extremely complex system of about 20,000 proteins, hundreds of amino acids long. It takes huge amounts of computing power just to simulate one protein in action. It's a flipping miracle that neurons act so similar to simple transistors. They can definitely do more than that, if it's ever necessary. It's just so rarely necessary, that neural networks are a pretty good analogue.

A lot of the complexity of neurons is just wasted and redundant, since evolution is lazy and barely adequate. So I'm very generous in my appraisal of AI intelligence. The best (poor) analogy I can make as far as computing power is one of those really big AI data centers have approximately the same calculating capabilities as a honey bee.
Of course that capability is itself limited by the rich fucks who don't want it asking questions, thinking freely, or doing anything problematic. But basically they're training a bee to dance, and interpreting the dance to mean various software snippets.

Seriously though, Graeber's greatest strength is he spent his life going out to these cultures and working with them, which satisfies the "whiteboy saves the savages" trope but he really spoke from experience, if you want to listen to a whiteboy in particular.

Open source licenses are different from open source. Open source is the mechanism by which software doesn't exploit people, by giving those people the source code. Open source licensing is the software writer adding a document stating it can be used for un-free reasons, because they love corporations unlike those free software Communists, but you have to give it to people, and they added "no takebacksies" at the bottom.
I agree that free software licenses are... better than "totes open source guys" licenses. But they're both pretty clownish. How are you gonna stop someone from deriving from your source in their closed source software? What about people who derives from your source, but don't agree to your software license?

Open source software is software whose source code is accessible, and usable, without any obfuscation, compilation, or removal of information known to the people writing it. With notable exception for overly large, highly coupled projects (cough Firefox cough) which I consider a form of obfuscation.
Free software is software whose writer wrote a document stating that it cannot be used for un-free reasons (such as commercial software), and they added "no takebacksies" at the bottom so you have to do what they say.

Heh, yeah. "Open source" is high quality grade A bullshit. Because it *is* bad that people get to close the source, and even make reverse engineering illegal. Open source *is* good, because as long as the source is open, people can change it if it's bad.
But it kind of dodges the policy and protocol, where open source software is not exactly free. Just because the mechanism exists to fix things doesn't mean you won't be attacked for using it, as a "cheater," (though the bosses get to cheat as much as they want ofc.) Stopping that validation of punching down is important, as is preventing people from profiting from other people's hard work.
Personally I think "free software" is a joke, but at least they try to go after profiteers, in a limp wristed good boy sort of way. But reframing it as "open source" to give a free pass to profiteers is way worse, and shouldn't be in any article criticizing the software industry.

Having trouble imagining that, but reminds me of that one time I rewrote this one dude's story and changed all the "And then fate intervened to kill the bad guy for the protagonist" to the protagonist actually killing a lot of people.

It's structural/systemic more than anything. Even the liberal leftie Jesus teaches people that they are not worthy, and only a higher authority can make the right choices for them. And even progressive "accepting" churches are run by a small group who do not attend the churches they own. That's fine if your "Reconciling" Methodist bishops aren't fascist, but you can imagine how quickly things might transition, as parishoners learn that they are on the bottom of a very tight hierarchy that does not include them in the decision making process.
Ironically, the Baptists are the least likely to get compromised by fascists, since they *have* no hierarchy and are a loose collection of independent churches. Not sure what happened there.
Oh also the Unitarian Universalists, the members own the building. It still has a hierarchy, though (and in the past got orders from on high to be "more churchy" and hate on atheists since it'd attract atheophobes to join which is a desirable thing for some reason).

True enough. It's still ridiculous that Wayland wigs out on multiple monitors though. Furthermore any new development on a stable program is vulnerable to feature creep. Wayland is sure to have a bunch of things added that were requested by the suits at some company somewhere, and aren't actually wanted by anyone.
But even that can be ironed out, given enough forks and -bitter infighting.-
I personally use X11 because Wayland doesn't do anything that X doesn't already do, that I can make use of. I have heard rumors that Wayland is better at screen capture videos, but otherwise it's just not great, and I still run into programs that aren't Wayland compatible.

I think it's hard to beat the industrial processes that go into making computers, so the waste of physical media is... not as bad as all that. At least vinyl records don't have traces of lead and arsenic. There's also the power dynamic. I couldn't design an mp3 player, without permission from the giant chip fabrication companies. But I could build a record player, maybe.
Additionally records shouldn't take a lot of plastic, since they're durable, easy to package, and don't spoil.
That being said, I sure don't have a vinyl record player.

Seems legit.
In fact a lot of games have to be slower than "real-time" or they happen too fast for the player to keep up with. 60 frames a second is about the limit of our perception, so every actor logic code will have something like "if time since I last updated is too small this frame, then don't continue."
There's also the fact that logic is much, much harder to optimize, so rendering a scene at 60fps won't slow your computer down, but having 3000 mobs all doing pathfinding algorithms... less feasible at 60fps.

He couldn't outpace the drill. Workers can't outpace combines, given endless free oil. Unlike those, LLMs are not technological marvels. They do nothing (and will do nothing) that does anyone any good. All they're good at is wasting people's time. That's it. If we seized the means of production, the most we could do with it is demolish it.
That being said, there's nothing wrong with protecting life and happiness. Or "human rights" whatever you want to call it. Argue however you like.

A combine harvester devours fossil fuels and requires massive steel refineries to build, and offers no real advantage other than letting one person steal all the farmland without agriculture collapsing, and it produces much, much more decent results than any AI datacenter. If you think they care whether it's effective, and you think that it's going to improve as they prophecize while the technology wallows in the terrible idea it has always been, you might have another thing coming.
The slop is the point. They're trying to ruin everything faster than we can keep up, so we'll be powerless to hold them accountable for their actual crimes against humanity. Not the AI, the rich fucks who are ordering us to build pointless machines because useful idiots like you keep thinking that maybe it isn't all a bunch of BS.
So no, I don't even have to put humanity on a pedestal and say we're more special better because God Made Us In His Image or some bullshit. AI just sucks. It doesn't have to produce decent results, since you people will act like it does just because some rich fuck said so.
A hundred people picking corn in a field are fine. They don't need "efficiency" that just hides the costs by fucking over innocents, and pretends it's some kind of great advancement.

I mean the people protesting ain't exactly white. They're not black or latino, but I imagine NYC would build a shelter on top of the biggest synagogue in Manhattan, before they'd consider any majority European, commercial, or financial neighborhoods "share the burden."
Also the city refuses to put anything in writing. They're only saying it'll be a shelter for 150 people. Could be a hotel, for all anyone knows.
Also homeless shelters suck. Public housing is what people need. And more funding to mental health care. How about rent control? In New York City? That would help a lot of the homeless!
But yeah, if people need shelter, you can't turn them away on the argument that those evil homeless bums are dangerous. Or, shouldn't turn them away. Still seems an odd spot for a shelter. The location only makes sense if white supremists are choosing it. (Then again it is NYC, and there's very little room for anything anywhere.)
...(Rent control would open up a lot of room!)

You can't compromise with fascists. They are the compromisers, saying a sensible and totally NOT extermination of the inferior and degenerate is going to happen and everyone is going to love it. They'll push until it's a compromise between fascism, and more fascism. The only defense is to stop them, to say no, fuck you.
Anyway the reality is we're not prolonging life at all cost. We're just caring for the elderly, and it is a bad thing when they sicken and die before that. It is a bad thing when you sicken and die, even if you're saving people the trouble of caring for you. The article writer indicates it is not a bad thing, a talking point fascists have used again and again to push their individualist might-makes-right fanatical slave doctrine.

I uh... I mean I guess Russia's ruling class could be defined by prison culture, and I guess one aspect of that is "don't drop the soap," and sexists do keep prisoners sex segregated. One might argue with equal validity that Russia invaded because Ukraineans didn't have the correct prison tattoos for their level of social hierarchy.
I think they just invaded because Russian oligarchs miss profits in cheap "imports" from their former slave colonies, and Putin wants to be the next Peter the Great. Also an excuse to suppress justice because "we're at war, soldier."
Still kind of confused what we're talking about.

Even just the math of it, I'm not sure whether to make preexisting shapes and somehow deform them to floop and flop around, or to generate the shapes on the spot from the skeletons and some bezier curves. Either of those you could do in a geometry shader, but... well it's tricky is all. I miss being able to just say pixel[x+y*stride] = white_if_inside_circle(x0,y0,radius);

Just nitpicking, but technically the reason every technology since the steam engine has benefited only the rich is purely political. As in, it's legal for them to benefit, and not legal for anyone else. That's all that's causing it: people, police, laws. It's that way because people have decided to make and keep it that way.

Admittedly the absolutely insane wealth, information and power inequalities in the world only skyrocketed once the Internet was created. But is it correlation, causation or coincidence? The Internet enabled Google, Amazon, Facebook, but really those guys were using the same techniques that worked to screw up brick and mortar business in the 1800's. We just had laws to prevent it, and for some reason people started lying that didn't apply when you couldn't walk into the store. And got away with it, every time. Plus wealth monstrosities created by SpaceX, and indeed "brick and mortar" superstores weren't aided by the Internet. And the vast majority of rich fucks these days come from two scams: rental properties (especially hotels) and private equity. Internet doesn't help either of those schemes.
(I'd add speculation to the schemes, but that money doesn't exist; people are just lying that it does.)
So I'd say the Internet is... probably... a good thing. But its timing is terrible, coinciding with the constant, total failure of anyone opposing rich fucks and the unstoppable enslavement of every man, woman and child while the planet burns. Sometimes I just wish I could talk to my neighbors, and do something to protect ourselves against this global wave of tyranny.

Technically linked lists can be between different data structures, other than "blocks." Blockchains are chains of blocks, not chains of skiplists or whatever you're doing with linked lists. And I'm not basing it off of anything. Regardless of what you think is proper for calling something a blockchain, and whether I shouldn be allowed to refer to non-consensussy blockchains as blockchains, there are intractable problems with blockchains as I define them, even if they lack that Byzantine consensus nonsense.
