Thinking about it now quitting my job, moving West, and living minimally for a few months really helped reset my entire life. Streaming while I'm on the job hunt for a tech job not with the biggest tech companies has also greatly helped with that too. I wonder if I already embody that west coast vibe of being more laid back and chill. A few times I've been told such, and that includes during streams. In a world of endless negativity, I'm happy to see folks finding my space more positive and relaxed :3

Went to the Colorado National Monument and it was a wondrous sight. I took a lot of photos so I'll try to upload those later. Gotta do that for the zoo as well. Even though I was done there by 18:00, it was going to be over four hours to Salt Lake City and I wasn't feeling like that much more driving today. Checked in at Grand Junction early so I can get more rest and leave early in the morning tomorrow for activities. Maybe I'll try driving up the last stretch a bit for an easy last day to Oregon after. That seems to be the plan for now.

omg the mountains in Colorado are gorgeous. I drove through Denver and headed through the mountains, trying to get through before inclement weather started, but once I was at the highest point the road takes you, the snow started to get abundant and the road started to get a bit slushy. The truckers were ordered by road signs to apply chains so a bunch of trucks pulled to the side to get their tires weather proofed, which made traffic slow to a halt for a bit. I was stopped for long enough to start worrying a little but the traffic started again and we got going slowly.
After like 15 miles, we came out of it and it was only intermittent rain and snow on the way down. The views were some of the most impressive I've personally ever seen and it was such a cool drive though the valley. Stopped at a Sonic for lunch now and going to get gas before heading to the national monument :3

But yeah, there's a whole lot of nothing west of Indiana for a long time. Just great expanses of plains and farmland and wind turbines and occasionally rest stops on the I-80. Such long stretches between gas stations that I was a bit concerned with having enough fuel for potentially 100mi between them. It is quite lovely out here in that great land sense for how vast this zone is. I wouldn't ever choose to live out here but passing through has been enjoyable in the clear weather.

If I try to make it to Colorado National Monument and Salt Lake City, it's looking like another 12-13hr day. I may just try to do the monument and stay in Grand Junction for one day, then Salt Lake City to see the sights there for one more before heading straight to Oregon. We'll see how it plays out tomorrow.

So I foreshadowed impending misfortune earlier as the wind swept the cap right off my head upon getting off the blue line. Also super glad I picked a really solid backpack for travel and day trips. Originally, I got it for work as a replacement last year for the one they provided since the top strap broke off and the inside was just too complex for what it needed to do. This is an Aer City Pack Pro 2 and it worked perfectly for work, and of course was designed for travel, so having it on this trip is excellent. Emptied it out for an easy day trip to the zoo so I'll have some room for souvenirs or something :3

The distance yesterday was over 700mi. Pair that with about 100mi from the first day and that's 800mi. Well over the entire distance of the UK from the farthest ends. Only about 200mi short of the length of New Zealand. Less than half the length of Japan. That's a lot ground to cover and less than a third of my total trip. This will probably take six days total with the tire incident eating a day there.

Watch night was still fun and now I've got the day to spend in Chicago to recharge. Think I'll head out early in the morning tomorrow to Nebraska so I'll have plenty of time to maybe see a friend and get to a hotel for a good sleep. Either it'll be the long part or the short part of driving through to get to Grand Junction, depending on where my friend is. After Grand Junction is Salt Lake City and I planned to make that an easy day to see the sights there. Lastly is the final push to Oregon.

I'm rather tired but it is watch night so I'm hanging with online friends still. Tomorrow is gonna be a day to check out Chicago and rest for the next leg of the journey. Driving long distance is not a problem for me. I can stay awake for long periods so the ten and a half hours today was fine. Thankfully, the only time I needed to stop was in Columbus for gas so my car has as much stamina for driving as me. At this pace, I'm right on track and the only hard time should be getting to and from Nebraska.

I was up early for a while just awaiting the auto shop to call that the tire is in and I got to catch up on some saved videos and got to chat with my host a bit. He's a chill guy also in tech and also unhappy with his job and looking for new work too. I think we would get along great with our like interests. Maybe when I have the time again. Also, I gave him a spare copy of Tom Clancy's The Division for PS4 that you'll remember I had multiple copies available sitting in my car for months. He was actually interested in playing it too so that was a win win there lol

The Costco folks were also easy going when I mentioned that too. Feels like I'm doing other peoples' dream journey on this trip but that could just be this is a smaller town and there's not as much out here.

So it's been a bit of chaos already lol
Not far from hibachi, I somehow already got a flat tire. These are brand new tires from last week at Costco, (which I specifically chose for warranty support throughout the country rather than just a local auto shop). Managed to get to a Costco on the flat but the damage was done and it's unsalvageable. They also didn't have my specific tire to replace so I called a very close shop and they can get me a new one of this type in the morning.
Luckily, my dad's girlfriend has a nephew super close so I got a place to stay tonight. Looks like I'm getting to Chicago a day late now but I am happy this happened earlier rather than later.

Just had them replaced at Costco last week in preparation so I'm glad that I was able to pull in to one just now so they can take care of it. Preparation successfully achieved for this outcome. That reminds me, I saw a real dark green Honda Street van out driving last week. Never heard of it before, but it was clearly a foreign model because it was so small, like Japanese kei truck small, and the steering wheel was on the right side so it was meant for driving on the left side of the road. I try not to be a doomer, but I work in this industry and every day I wonder how feasible it would be to become completely independent from tech in this day and age. So many people work in this industry. I've grown more distant with colleagues over two years now seeing how government collusion is going on and the trajectory of things to come, yet none of my coworkers care. Not even politics. Even just casual AI use they think is harmless fun. Tech is cool so we are cool by association. I see tech as tools for people to do cool things with, not the tech itself. The people should be the focus. They haven't been for a long time though. When you value objects over people, you lose all humanity. Empathy does not increase the bottom line. Capitalism begets hypercapitalism. We all suffer for it.
I believe in people, I really do, but I also believe the wickedness in some people is real as well. They are two sides of one coin and cannot exist alone. And yet, as bleak as it seems, I believe we will overcome in time.

The main reason I've been on this topic so much recently is because I know how literally all of the technology today is dependent on silicon. There is no other option. Silicon manufacturers have the entire modern world at their whim. They have the raw supply chain, the technical knowledge, and the facilities to produce it all. Everything is a computer now. Phones, cars, refrigerators, industrial farm equipment, watches, security cameras, etc. They all need a processor and memory because they aren't just basic microcontrollers anymore that are programmed once and run as independent systems. We are used to systems with complex interfaces and operational options. Make a change and save user settings. That isn't stored on batteries anymore but NAND flash. Now add Internet connectivity.
And given the history of memory manufacturers being caught multiple times for fraud and price fixing, it seemed inevitable they would continue running their racket. Who would dare stop them? This is a technocracy age now.

Ok, most of it makes sense and is fine. I just never liked the middle operation on the UI being a + in any application. It means "add" which is abstracted via context to mean "add post" or "new post", but is a layer too far for me to default understanding. It more looks like a symmetrical separation icon visually, like a crosshair reticule before I think it means anything else. This is the same problem I have with the YouTube app after they changed the UI in the same way, where that is the only icon in the action bar that is textless, and thus, meaningless to me until I accidentally press it and it is a button to upload a new video. Just another UI gripe with Mastodon, but it isn't that bad overall

So I only traced the body and roughly the holes, and the lines and holes were approximated by hand. Rulers are very handy and a good eraser helped for the detailing on pencil. And lastly a printer to scan it in.

My dad, his girlfriend, and I went out to dinner to celebrate his birthday yesterday. It was a good time and all, but at one point we were talking about age and she asked me what I thought is the point where someone can be considered old. I thought about that for a second and, instead of mentioning wrinkled skin or arthritis or any number of age related ailments, I said that it's the point in which one closes their mind to new ideas.
There was no more description to add as she understood what was meant, and she said that was a good answer. I've been thinking about that thought since.

It is the start of a new year, so I am thinking about refreshing my emergency preparedness kit/bug out bag. What are some recommendations to include in a kit for winter time?
Also, if you have a kit already, now is a good time to check the batteries and shelf life of any items you have stored.

I was about to head to work but I stepped out and found my elderly neighbor sitting by their car asking for help. I rushed over and he was just sitting there because he had fallen but at some point got himself to sit upright. He seemed mostly ok, not bleeding or anything, but he said he had a stroke and his arthritis prevented him from pulling himself up, and that he'd been there for about 15 minutes. I helped him up and gave him my phone number in case something like that happened again, but now I am concerned if it was just unlucky that no one that was around for that long (it's a semi-densely packed suburb and there's often people out, but it was already getting dark outside and a little chilly) and that he may not have family there to notice and help him sooner. Anyway, I'm just glad I was there at the right time and that he now has someone to count on in such an event. Gonna let my roommate know too since we have opposite schedules.
