Lewis Your #podcast can be serious, funny, highly produced, conversational, seasonal, weekly, daily, or irregular. That freedom is useful, but it also gives you responsibility: choose the format that best serves your audience, not merely the format that feels easiest this week. https://theaudacitytopodcast.com/10-reasons-to-celebrate-the-independence-of-podcasting/?utm_source=djl_mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=tap439&utm_content=p03-format npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis If you have a large monitor, do you make your browser the full width (or near it)? And if so, do you like it when websites expand to whatever that width is, or when they lock to a maximum width? npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis I desperately need to move Podgagement off MonogDB. My time-series data is costing nearly $1,000/month—and that's for self-managed hosting and only 2 replicas! I plan to move all time-series data to TimescaleDB, and then maybe all customer data to Convex. I need to bite the bullet and get it done and test it. But simply the data-restructuring in MongoDB took months to process. I'm afraid of how long it will take to migrate that to PostgresSQL + TimescaleDB. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis One of my biggest workflow changes was moving away from full scripts. I’ve found that outlines give me more energy, fewer awkward retakes, and a more natural connection with my audience. https://theaudacitytopodcast.com/how-i-improved-my-podcasting-workflow-in-2025/?utm_source=djl_mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=tap431&utm_content=outlines_more_energy npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis @nprofile…2rrg Awesome! When someone searches for a podcast in your app, do you just carry over the same results and order from PI? npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis @nprofile…sqvl Essentially, `txt` could potentially handle _anything_, and we could just stop inventing tags altogether because the `txt` tag could handle it. But that's messy, unstructured, wasteful, and difficult to parse. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis @nprofile…sqvl Then don't put email or phone numbers in there. Put a contact form URL. That flexibility is the point of this tag. And for podcasters, like me, who don't mind publishing a feedback email address and voicemail phone number, it provides that in a consistently structured way. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis If you use Podcast Index for your app's catalog, are you using the Podcast Index endpoint for search, too? Or do you roll your own search? @nprofile…cn7u @nprofile…km5y @nprofile…6jtr #Castamatic npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis I need to plan the best way to migrate my 7 years and 4 TB of data from MongoDB—it took months to convert it the first time! I don't expect the final Postgres + TimescaleDB storage to actually be 1/14 the size of MongoDB's, even though that's what this limited test showed. But even if I can cut my storage requirements to 1/4 of what MongoDB is using now, that will save me thousands of dollars every year! npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis A followup on that performance discrepancy. Both experiments used the same concurrency and similar batch-writing settings. MongoDB was faster but maxed the vCPUs. Postgres was slower, but wasn't fully using the CPUs. I suspect that if I tweaked the concurrency for Postgres, I would get similar or better performance. Just mathematically, making Postgres max the CPUs like MongoDB does would probably get processing closer to 10 minutes. But I'll experiment with that more. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis I can't fully test read performance with such a small dataset, but simply counting items in the database was _much_ faster with Postgres. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis MongoDB averaged 11:55, maxing out all 4 vCPUs, and generated about 500 MB of data. PostgreSQL with TimescaleDB, however, averaged 15:10, using about 68% of all 4 vCPUs, and generated _34_ MB of data. WHAT? I think MongoDB storage gets "more" efficient at scale, because this test created lots of time-series "buckets" with only 1 record in each. But even then, PostgreSQL and TimescaleDB compressed the same data so much better. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis WHOA! I just tested moving Podgagement's 4 TB podcast-rankings database from MongoDB with time-series collections to PostgreSQL with TimescaleDB. The results absolutely shocked me! I ran repeated tests generating and inserting essentially identical data on both databases. Both experiments running on identical Hetzner servers. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis @nprofile…v7k6 Wow! That app actually handles it properly. It's too bad the app is ugly, clunky, and slow. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis I _really_ want to replace Postman in my dev toolbox, but there's one feature I can't find in any alternative: Forcing the response to render in a format. For example, I use a weird API that wraps JSON data in HTML. Postman is the only app I've seen that can render that as pretty JSON. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis I'm using OpenClaw to filter my LinkedIn connection requests and having it report every "professional podcast promoter" as a scammer and blocking them. Yes, I realize this is bordering on breaking the space-time continuum, but I made sure to not give OpenClaw that access. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis @nprofile…td70 @nprofile…sqvl ActiveCampaign requires a template, but I've designed my own in the past. Even with a designed template, I kept it simple. I used to send the RTF-style emails years ago, but then with multiple brands, I thought it would be good to give them a bit more of a branded look. But since The Audacity to Podcast is still very much a personal brand, I might make that the only "super simple" template. npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis I've decided to go back to simple email marketing templates that look like mostly plain text. When I thought critically about the emails I receive, I realized I tend to value the ones more that look like normal emails, even though I _know_ they're newsletters (complete with required footer info). npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis "… the absence of pictures in a narrative audio podcast is not a negative, it's not a handicap. It doesn't mean we are less than something on Netflix. It means that we are other than, we are different from. And in fact, using sound only and not providing images is very liberating in many ways, both in terms of imaginative possibilities and also in terms of what you don't have to worry about." npub1etmga4nrfp0ejdwtlxy9f8xw79uyllcdnvv5r95c29n8tk60rzqsmmsavu Daniel J. Lewis "… in front of a microphone, and more importantly, when I'm sitting down trying to get somebody to tell me their story, which might be nuanced, sensitive, difficult, even traumatic, I want to limit as much as possible the intrusiveness of my reaction with them and just focus on that personal connection. And audio does that so much better."
