Bambulab is the perfect example of a dipshit company taking all the openly available prior art and then trying to privatize the shit out of it, making random patents around it to stop anyone else from competing when they couldn't exist without the previously existing open ecosystem.
They are now [suing someone for the crime of forking an AGPL project](https://github.com/jarczakpawel/OrcaSlicer-bambulab)
It's really a systemic issue, because the patent system's exclusive purpose is enforcing monopolies and it never helps actual innovators unlike its stated goal. And intellectual property law is a scourge on society.
I will however also blame everyone who kept buying bambulab printers after it was clear they will pull as much anticonsumer anticompetitive bullshit as they can get away with. The locked down firmware scandal should have been enough to never buy anything from that company. Instead they're thriving while burning down the ecosystem that allowed them to come into existence. And consumers give zero fucks about it despite alternatives existing.
If it's fine to shit on tesla owners for ignoring what elon musk has been doing with the profits from the company, I think it's only fair to apply the same logic to 3d printers where bambulab is suing out of existence the people that made this tech accessible for hobbyists in the first place.

my point is largely that using a framework/language where you're not at risk of accidentally eval'ing or running something unintended unless you deliberately run eval or idk don't use your SQL libraries' substitution feature, makes it much harder to fuck up in critical ways
With CGI as I understand it you have to think about:
- what exactly are your web server settings, what will be allowed to be executed
- path traversal issues
- advanced sysadmin knowledge to mitigate the above (chroots, restricting permissions, namespacing, etc)
- ensuring you don't accidentally put some file that shouldn't be there in the web server root directory
- parsing/escaping whatever inputs you get correctly
With more abstracted systems you will not have to worry about a lot of those things, just handling things correctly in your code, which can be reasonably simple when you use things like say Pydantic to validate the structure and contents of the received data

I have some vague thoughts on how a lot of them suck in the sense that they don't allow me to adequately classify stuff, like just conflating different feelings about a thing. Like "neutral" isn't quite the same as "idk, never tried but curious", and "neutral" isn't quite the same as "mixed feelings".
Some make it difficult to figure out which side of a thing you're rating (for example: you sucking dick vs you getting your dick sucked)
And some of them have so much gendered bullshit like, "FM" "FF" "MMF" "FFM" what are you talking about just like have a scale for attraction to masculinity, femininity, poly relationships, etc.
My demi ass also just like, struggles to comprehend whenever there's a "body types" section like idk man when participating it's all about being close to someone in the first place and when watching I tend to care more about what happens than who.
So maybe being able to skip a whole section would be neat.
Also a thing I can definitely point out is that relying on colors exclusively to convey meaning sucks ass accessibility wise and there should be symbols in addition to that. And you could probably find some way to export stuff in a screen-reader accessible format.

one thing I'm always disappointed by is how whenever you have a forum dedicated to modding some user-hostile device, a lot of the related tooling will just be dropped as a zip somewhere and that's it, often with missing or incomplete source code
now I'm trying to figure out how to make an update package for a kindle k4b and the problems are:
- the dummy update package that's supposed to be an example is missing k4 completely
- another package that has partial source code has a build script which references some subversion repo, and has a comment that says "oh you need to also clone this special tool to build this you silly" specifically for k4, meanwhile that repo isn't fucking public, and the thing is nowhere to be found
this is still much better than what I've seen of android modding funnily enough
but it's such a shame that there's no instructions that I can find on how to just write a thing that modifies one file

found a surge xt preset that got me 80% of the way there, then fucked around until I got something I liked
now, I'm going out to pick up wife so I won't have my computer so let's see if I can replicate it in caustic from scratch

a decentralized message database like in matrix is probably incompatible with good moderation because any bug in the difference reconciliation algorithms will let bad actors fuck stuff up. I'm pretty sure this has already happened on matrix a few times before.
And who do you want to run the matrix instance anyway? Because there sure isn't any central moderation to help with bots posting disturbing and/or illegal content in your channels. And the built-in moderation tooling (you can manually ban people, how amazing) is incapable of dealing with that.
If you just want to run an open source project, discord handles a huge chunk of the effort of hosting a communication platform for you.
The access control features and moderation tools built into discord are way ahead anything available for matrix, and they have been for years frankly.
Matrix only really works for direct chats or small groups, and then you run into problems with flaky encryption key synchronization. It just doesn't scale very well. And Signal does a better job at the kind of communication Matrix can do decently anyway.

my experience is limited to a mailing list ran on google groups, if that has any customization or archives beyond the "unsubscribe" link then it's probably limited to gmail email addresses, maybe that's the reason why the mailing list experience has been shit for me

mailing lists and IRC channels are like the opposite of accessible
to elaborate:
IRC is unusable on mobile internet connections, or on multiple devices at once, doesn't keep any history and has none of the features you would expect from a chat protocol in 2024 (yes bouncers exist but they are extremely convoluted to set up and often assume you have some arcane knowledge on how IRC works that doesn't seem to be actually documented anywhere)
Mailing lists clutter your inbox with tons of discussion you don't care about and are very difficult to read especially when a thread splits into multiple branches.
The best way I've seen of solving it is to display threads like Reddit or Misskey does, but I have never seen anyone implement a way to read mailing lists like that. Most forum software just ignores the problem by not supporting any way of "forking" a discussion, which results in terrible, impossible to follow threads where every other post quotes some previous post related to a different topic (see XDA-developers).
Also my email provider would ask me to pay up for the volume of received email if I joined a few mailing lists each receiving dozens of messages a day.
If a project requires me to join a mailing list to contribute I will simply not contribute to the project. Git forges exist for a reason, they provide really good UX for merge requests and issue tracking.
