Another comically basic bug in Tahoe's TV.app: if you remove a download from this menu, you cannot remove any other downloads from this screen (because the menu item won't appear in their context menus!) until you navigate to a different section, then back to Downloaded.
I really have to wonder if anyone at Apple uses this app…

I didn't realize that Hetzner had expanded to the US. And their prices are WAAAAYYY cheaper than Linode’s now.
(Turns out that charging 20% higher prices for the same resources over ~5 years in the web-hosting business makes you pretty easy to beat.)
Seriously looking at Hetzner now. Any experiences running medium-scale applications there, like maybe 20 server instances with ~a terabyte of databases?

Stumped by this one. Setting up an iPad with iCloud restore, and none of the apps are downloading automatically. Tapping one brings this up.
I'm on my Wi-Fi network, other connectivity works… and while this iPad does have cellular, no plan has ever been activated on it yet.
Reboots and Reset Network Settings haven't fixed it. iPadOS 26.1. Tapping "Download" immediately downloads the item over Wi-Fi.
Anyone ever see this? Any ideas?

It’s naive to believe Cook can ever satisfy Trump for more than a day. It will never be enough. It never is, for anyone.

I don't want to seem like I'm nitpicking too much, but the "Hold This Call?” UI needs another pass.
The small "Hold” button is nearly touching the needlessly tiny dismiss (✕) button, which only seems about 24pt wide.
This will be error-prone for lots of people in practice. Opposite actions should not be represented by tiny, immediately neighboring touch targets.
I know it's a small thing, but it's the kind of thing that has me worried that institutional UI talent is drained or marginalized.

Honestly, this is making Terminal (and Safari) in Tahoe VERY hard for me to use.
Tabs in Tahoe are extremely difficult to distinguish from each other and from the active tab.
I've never switched away from Safari, and I've never investigated third-party terminal apps, but if this ships in the fall, I'll most likely need to do both. And I really, really don't want to.
Please, Apple, fix your design. Computers aren't passive "content" viewers — they're tools.

Liquid Glass’ blurred content everywhere is especially cruel to those of us who use reading glasses or progressives.
The reflex to seeing blurry text on our phones is to adjust our sight angle or distance to sharpen it. But, of course, it’s not our fault, doesn’t sharpen, and just causes eyestrain.

We've known for decades that translucency in UIs looks really cool, but is extremely difficult to design in a way that works with arbitrary content across versatile situations.
With the glass-redesign rumors, many of us thought, “If anyone can do it, it's Apple! They must've finally solved it."
They haven’t.
It still looks cool in some contexts, and utterly fails in others.

Not new (2023), but this exemplifies Apple’s culture of arrogance and entitlement.
By their logic, the local electric company “facilitates” a large portion of my Apple-device use. They should claim that they created the platform that lets Apple devices exist, and demand a third of their revenue.
What about my ISP? Cellular provider? Router manufacturer? The wires in my walls? The pizza place down the street, for fueling my body as I type?
Institutional delusion.

There is no “safety in numbers” with Apple’s IAP demands — at least not until you're the size of Uber/Meta.
The entire market of podcast apps outside of Apple/Spotify is peanuts to Apple.

If you're having trouble with audio sync from your Apple TV to an external soundbar or sound system:
Turn on Match Format and Match Dynamic Range in the Apple TV's video settings.
I don't know why this makes a difference on my LG C7 OLED, but it REALLY, REALLY does.

I'd say podcast tech "moves very slowly", but even that's generous — podcast tech hardly moves at all.
But that's a GOOD THING!
Most efforts to move podcast tech "forward" have failed due to insufficient adoption. But most would’ve meant more potential for platform lock-in and increased ad-tech and tracking possibilities, either by design or as unintended consequences.
Podcasts' technical simplicity is not a problem to be solved — it's a defense from platform vultures and ad-tech assholes.

I've never thought to try it again.
The same benefits and risks would still apply. CBR is INCREDIBLY wasteful for podcasts, but I bet lots of platforms still don't seek properly in long VBR MP3s.
One solution could be adding multi-enclosure-format support to the podcast ecosystem, where we offer modern clients a list of formats and let them pick more advanced ones if they support them.
But I bet ZERO big DAI platforms, and therefore zero popular podcasts, would support it.

I keep stats on the most popular Overcast link-share destination apps. What do you think tops the list?
Not Facebook or X or Instagram or Snapchat.
It’s Messages, by a MILE, then mostly other private-messaging apps! The first public-social-network app is #12 on the list, averaging only 1% as many shares as Messages.
Private messaging is FAR more popular than social media.

Upgrading to Sequoia, for some reason, finally broke my old, pre-subscription use of Fantastical.
(It's not that I don't like the app… I'm just perfectly happy with the functionality of the old version and don't need any of the newer features.)
In completely unrelated news, I am not charging enough for my subscription.
