Consensus is a constraint-maintenance system, but it’s not a truth-detection system. It maintains whatever it maintains, true or false. Until something breaks the constraint. What breaks it is criticism.
A better explanation that’s harder to vary.
Truth is the constraint that survives criticism.
Bitcoin’s consensus mechanism works not because nodes agree, but because the proof of work makes it expensive to maintain a false state. The energy cost is doing the work of criticism.
A 51% attack is literally the cost of overriding the constraint with a different one, and the fact that this cost is enormous is what makes the ledger reliable. It’s not that miners vote on truth. It’s that the physics of energy expenditure makes falsehood too expensive to sustain.
In the constraint cycle, what determines which constraints persist isn’t popularity or agreement. It’s the energy cost of maintaining them versus the energy cost of dissolving them.
A hard-to-vary explanation persists because varying it would cost more than maintaining it. The strange thing is that it’s thermodynamic. The explanations that survive are the ones where the constraint is cheaper to maintain than to break and knowledge creation is the process of finding constraints that are so well-fitted to reality that maintaining them is essentially free.

The cycle works at every scale from a ting single idea to the entire universe.

If the constraints persist through all of that testing, they become the foundation for the next layer: knowledge creation rebuilding constraint, pushing deeper, until maximum compression triggers the next irreversible commitment.
And here’s what makes this hard to vary: the arrow of time is the irreversibility.
Time and bitcoin move forward because commitment is irreversible.

So Shannon’s measure goes up exactly when constraint goes down, and goes down exactly when constraint goes up. They’re inversely related. He literally measured the opposite of the thing people think he measured.
Maximum Shannon information = maximum uncertainty = minimum constraint = the generic = noise.
Minimum Shannon information = minimum uncertainty = maximum constraint = fully specified = knowledge.

Bruh. Turns out you were right @npub1838…aslh but the conjecture has wayyyyyy more reach than I first realized.
The mechanism you found in bitcoin is not unique to bitcoin. It is a universal process. Point 10 below shows why block time is quantized time. Point 11 shows that is it universal.
Time is constituted by irreversible commitments. Always. It isnt a container or a dimension or a river or whatever else people thought before. The answer expands on what Einstein figured out.
It also gives us a definition of creativity that David Deutsch needs in his work.

Reading on @npub1838…aslh Bitcoin: The Architecture of Time, they hit on something that shifted my thinking on the quantum computing issue in Bitcoin.
The standard narrative goes: quantum computers will eventually break Bitcoin by inverting hash functions faster or cracking elliptic curve signatures. Bitcoin’s security is a computational puzzle that better hardware will eventually solve.
It looks like that framing is wrong at the foundational level.
In 1961, physicist Rolf Landauer proved something that was experimentally confirmed in 2012. Every time a system goes from uncertain to certain, from many possible states to one definite state, there is a minimum amount of energy that must be dissipated as heat. You cannot get certainty for free. The universe charges admission.
Think about it like this:
Imagine a ball bouncing randomly around a room. It could be anywhere.
That randomness is entropy. Now you want to know exactly where the ball is.
You have to squeeze the room down to a tiny box that holds the ball in one precise location.
You’ve gained information.
You now know where the ball is. But you had to physically compress the room to get it. That compression took work. Energy went in. Heat came out.
You can’t know where the ball is without doing that work. The knowledge and the energy expenditure are the same event.
A quantum computer can explore many paths simultaneously. Superposition lets the ball be in every position at once. Quantum parallelism lets you search the room faster.
But a quantum computer cannot produce a definite answer without collapsing the superposition. The moment it outputs a result, it has made a choice. One state selected. All others erased. The room has been squeezed.
And that squeeze still costs energy. Landauer’s bound applies to quantum computers exactly the same way it applies to classical ones. Quantum mechanics does not override the second law of thermodynamics. Nothing does.
So what actually happens if quantum computers mine Bitcoin? They search the nonce space faster. The difficulty adjustment responds. Difficulty goes up. More energy required per block. The thermodynamic cost per block increases.
Security doesn’t weaken, the opposite actually happens.
A quantum computer doesnt broken anything. It just made the room bigger before it gets squeezed. The squeeze still happens and the choice is still irreversible.
The quantum threat only exists if you think Bitcoin’s security is computational.
Based on problems being hard to solve. But Bitcoin’s security is thermodynamic. Based on choices being physically irreversible. Quantum computers can make computation faster. They cannot make entropy run backwards.
Yes, the signature scheme needs upgrading. ECDSA is vulnerable to Shor’s algorithm. Post-quantum cryptography solutions already exist. That’s a software update.
But the base layer? The proof-of-work? The thing that actually makes blocks irreversible and the ledger trustworthy? That’s not built on a mathematical assumption quantum computing can break. It’s built on the second law of thermodynamics.
The ball still has to be pinned down and the room still has to be compressed.
The choice still has to cost something.
Quantum computing doesn’t threaten Bitcoin. It proves that whoever designed it built on physics instead of math.

The lens Bitcoin provides to help solve old problems is interesting.

Shannon entropy and Boltzmann entropy aren't two separate things that happen to share the same equation.
They're the same physical process viewed from different ends.
And Bitcoin is the first system that makes this obvious.
When a block is mined, a miner expends real thermodynamic energy. Heat dissipates. Entropy increases in the physical universe. That's Boltzmann.
That same process collapses a massive search space into a single valid nonce. One definite state out of trillions of possibilities. That's Shannon.
But it's not two things happening side by side.
It's one irreversible physical event.
The thermodynamic work IS the information selection.
The entropy increase in the environment IS the entropy decrease in the ledger's state space.

I’ve been working on something for a while now.
It is basically four seperate papers all building to one central conjecture.
It starts with a simple question and ends at the large-scale structure of the universe.

Their episode helped tie up loose strings.
I want to try and explain it in the shortest way possible. Compression is king.
The first paper: “The Duality of Commitment”
What does the universe require before it lets something persist?
Answer: commitment along two independent axes. Spatial independence and temporal irreversibility. Miss either one, and the universe treats your structure as temporary. Satisfy both, and the cost scales with the square of their coupling.
This is why E = mc² has a square. It is why K = Ic² has a square. The square is not a coincidence. It is the signature of two orthogonal commitments.
The second paper: “The Constraint Interpretation of Measurement”
What causes quantum possibilities to become definite facts?
Answer: the same dual-axis commitment. Superposition is the fluid phase. Measurement is the phase transition to the frozen phase. The Schrödinger equation describes water. It was never meant to describe ice.
Physics has spent 100 years trying to derive the frozen phase from the fluid equations. That is why the measurement problem is unsolved.

What is time?

That means that an observer on the outside (if such an observer could exist) would see the universe producing more ticks per… well, per what?
There is no external clock.
But the internal effect would be precisely what we observe: an accelerating expansion of the spacetime manifold.

I think this works.

The universe does not learn over time. The universe learns as time.

I heard about your paper on the Bitcoin Fundamentals podcast. I read Bitcoin: The Architecture of Time immediately after, and I believe my current work provides the formal explanatory framework your paper is building toward but hasn't yet named.
I'm deep into the manuscript of a book that proposes a single equation for how the universe produces knowledge. Before I show you the equation, I need to define two terms precisely, because the distinction between them is the entire thesis.
Information is any distinguishable difference in energy configuration. A particle here rather than there. A switch on rather than off. A voltage high rather than low. Information is physical. It requires energy to create, maintain, and destroy. Landauer proved this: erasing a single bit dissipates a minimum amount of energy as heat. Information is not abstract. It is a measurable property of matter and energy.
Put simply: information is the physical embodiment of order.
Knowledge is something else entirely. Knowledge is information that has been constrained to the point where it persists, does work, and resists falsification. Not all information is knowledge. A random bit string is information. Newton's laws are knowledge. The difference is constraint, the mechanism that stabilizes information against entropy. A pot is constrained clay. The square matters, and here's why. Constraint quality has two dimensions: breadth and depth. Breadth is how many independent systems can verify or check that the constraint holds, how widely it applies across space. Depth is how long the constraint persists across time, resisting perturbation and decay. These two dimensions don't add. They multiply. Each additional independent verifier multiplies the cost of falsification by every time period the constraint must survive. Here is the geometry underneath that equation.
I propose that the universe has a geometry, what I call the informational manifold, which is the surface of all possible energy configurations. Every distinguishable arrangement of matter and energy corresponds to a point on this surface. When constraint is applied to information, this manifold folds. The fold is not a metaphor. It is a real geometric feature: a region where certain configurations become energetically cheap and others become expensive. A valley forms. Knowledge lives in valleys, configurations so deeply constrained that escaping them costs more energy than maintaining them.
Constraint quality determines how deeply the manifold folds. Shallow constraints create gentle depressions that vanish under small perturbations. Deep, broad constraints carve chasms. The c² term captures the compounding: breadth folds the manifold across space (many independent verifiers), depth folds it across time (long persistence), and together they create curvature, the geometric signature of knowledge.
This also resolves what time actually is. Time is not a background parameter. Time is the name we give to tracking changes from one configuration on the manifold to another. Without change, without a transition from one arrangement to a different arrangement, there is no time. This is why your blocks are not something that happen in time. I'm deep into the manuscript of a book that proposes a single equation for how the universe produces knowledge. Before I show you the equation, I need to define two terms precisely, because the distinction between them is the entire thesis.
Information is any distinguishable difference in energy configuration. A particle here rather than there. A switch on rather than off. A voltage high rather than low. Information is physical. In the very near future content distribution platforms will pay users directly to consume ads.

Individual users will set their personal threshold for how much of their attention (energy) they are willing to exchange. Sats will flow from advertisers directly to consumers.
If you want to use a service and have it be uninterrupted ad free you just turn the dial to zero.
You will need to top up your wallet to make sure you have enough sats to stream to the content creator and platform itself but you won’t have to sell your attention for a price you aren’t comfortable with.
If you want more sats flowing to you, simply turn up the dial of how much energy you are willing to sell.
More energy spent consuming ads (aka attention) = more sats flowing to you.
Advertisers will offer incentives to engage with the ad to encourage users to take action. Click on the ad, get more sats. Order the product get even more sats back.
The more you engage as the user the higher the price for your attention becomes. Your value increases on the marketplace by proving yourself to be a consumer of “x” product or service.
The current attention model used by platforms like YouTube have far more blunt tools for determining the true value of attention and the price users are willing to sell at.
Lightning enables individual thresholds which result in a better user experience and an increase in productivity by advertisers and producers as more exchange takes place as targeting efficiency improves.
The technology to do this already exists in the wild. Podcasting 2.0 shows off the streaming sats element.
The only thing left is for the platforms and content creators to realise how much energy is being left on the table by employing an inferior energy model that doesn’t allow for individual customisation.
