Enigma Heart is, undeniably, Zelda 2 at its core. It has a wealth of new mechanics that differentiate it, but I'm not going to throw all of them at the player at once just for the sake of saying "See? It's different." I like slow growth. I like a journey.
That, and I feel like the fact that it actually has a character-driven narrative with real weight beyond "Link die, Ganon come back" makes it a completely different kind of experience. It's a JRPG wearing Zelda 2's clothes.

Done with the trailer. Gonna post it to socials tomorrow. It's the same clips and beats as the old ones, but I've done some subtle camera movements in post, as well as cropped in on a lot of the clips so they focus more on what's going on in the scene instead of being mostly empty screen space. I also added team credits.
Tomorrow after I post that, I need to do a second version, same trailer but with a different CTA slate specifically directing people to Steam for the Next Fest demo.

Adjusted my budget figures in my pitch deck and I'm going to be finally sending out the last 14 publisher pitches today.
I've also got two funds I want to pitch to, so that'll require me creating a second version of my pitch deck, since my current one focuses on publishers. (And I'll need to raise my ask, since in that case I would be doing/outsourcing everything myself: QA, marketing, localization, etc)

v0.1.68.01 is, unfortunately, going to *again* break save files, despite my promise that it wouldn't. It's my own fault; instead of just addressing the immediate issues, I went ahead and started developing chapter 2 content.
Good news is, I've reorganized the save file format to guard against this specific type of breaking change in future, so that's one less pain point going forward.

This isn't the final sprite; it's just a placeholder from [an artist on itch.io](https://merchant-shade.itch.io/16x16-mini-world-sprites ). Version 0.1.68 will probably push with this sprite in place, but eventually it'll be a cool little sprite of Zalia riding the horse.

A few things I can do before I can release the next version:<li>Fix the region data to fit the new map (for those popups that tell you where you are as you travel)</li><li>Fix the encounter zone data as well. Technically it doesn't matter for chapter 1, since it all uses zone 0. I was going for something kind of like HoverBat's addition of mountain tiles to Parapa Desert. But I feel like that goes a little too far with it, because it stops feeling desert-y? But I also don't want it to just be a screen and a half of sand tiles with no landmarks.

I'm probably going to keep the Brywood the same size as it is now, because that area is *supposed* to be confusing and feel impenetrable. But Saliya plain, the western expanse, and the snow fields all have some aggressive downsizing coming their way.
Danab Desert not quite as much, but it is gonna get a little smaller.

At this scale, and with Zalia's new (slower) walking speed, it takes 0-1 seconds longer to walk from Lydaea to Brygate than it did before. So that ain't bad! That's, like, margin of error territory.
Plus, psychologically, it probably feels better to navigate, because there's more scenery packed into a single screen as you walk by. You're not just walking through screens full of empty plains

As far as the current build goes, since there's been some interest shown in speedrunning and otherwise demoing the game for festivals and showcases and such this spring and summer, I'm gonna lock down version 0.0.83 this coming week, with Zalia's current walk speed and the current world map. That'll take the pressure off of having to get the entire map resized all at once.

I think I'm finally coming up with a method for scaling down this world map without driving myself crazy.
I'm gonna do it in stages, region by region. Get Lydaea plain (the area encompassing Lydaea, Brygate, Milama Lake, and the dogcow woods) feeling right at the new scale, save that as a tilemap. Go to the next region (probably Danab Desert). Get that feeling right in isolation, and then add it to the main tilemap. etc.

What's funny is, I didn't intend for Enigma Heart to be difficult as a matter of principle -- I'm not even really that big a fan of hard games in the first place. But I just happen to be good at Zelda II because I've played it so much, and I wanted to make a Zelda II-style game, so EH ended up being difficult as a matter of inheritance.

The game now reads a save file's version header and if there's a mismatch, it lets you know.
I may change that red to something less eye-searing.
And I think if the user wants to load an old save, I'll let them, but with a warning that the game may not work the way they expect, or perhaps even crash the program.
(Although I would eventually like to put in exception handling to guard against a crash. But ideally, that won't be necessary post-1.0)

Added a new glowing magic ball-type projectile so everybody's not just flingin' rocks everywhere. Feanu and Kabukava still spit rocks, but Lentavu spit glowy balls now. And the glowy balls have a special magic ping-y sound they make when you block them, isntead of the loud metallic *clang* that you get from blocking rocks.
Oh, and I added some sick lighting to the bottom levels of Danab Palace

For Windows, I just build on Windows 11 using MinGW, and dump SFML's DLL files in the folder. Seems to work so far. 😅

Okay, I'm currently compiling the shipping build.
The way my pipeline works is:<li>I develop on Ubuntu MATE 24.04, because that's what I'm running on my daily driver</li><li>For the shipping build, I move to a VM with an older LTS, to avoid glibc version incompatibilities on older distros. In this case, I build on 22.04.</li><li>I then test on a clean Debian 12 VM that's had nothing installed on it since the OS was first installed. If it runs there, I figure I'm safe.</li>

Okay, fixed! Gonna replay that battle and the Rykar one to make sure nothing is fucked, and then start building the final binaries!
I never should have shared so much code between Rykar and Xylara, especially now that their behavior is so different. The number of branches in this code is ridiculous. Definitely worth refactoring at some point.

Added a Zalia 1up doll in an easily-findable, non-secret area. In the full game, this will be deleted in favor of hiding it somewhere in act 2, but for now it helps the demo show off how the lives system works. (1ups are permanent across retries. If you pick one up, you have 4 max lives forever. There will be a total of 6 throughout the game, for a maximum of 9 lives)

Added a special tile on the overworld to signpost an early secret. It's now super obvious, but that's a good thing, because it'll teach the player about overworld secrets.

Moved the exit from Saliya one tile to the south so you don't get in a loop of exiting and re-entering the town if you hold down the right d-pad
