I think the core question is, is China on the developing to a highly-developed, mixed market economy path OR is the Chinese model fundamentally different (until the oligarchs can achieve state capture)?
I'm leaning to the latter. China can out perform dumb markets/self interested oligarchs. The US gets dragged until it can find an FDR, and the oligarchies have spent 60 years preventing an FDR arising.

Actually if it's *government* money, not Trump and cronies taking private stakes, it's good policy in principle. It's what China does, for sectors they are actively developing in the current 5 Years Plan.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clearer. My comment wasn't about the degrees of threat to the US democratic system. You're right, this is more serious the either '16 or '20.
My comment pertained to the US's ability to engage w/ reality. The GOP simply have less situational awareness an the Dems [theirs is better, but isn't good]. The GOP are still in Karl Rove's "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality".
For Russia, China and Iran, Trump is preferred.

Of not maintaining the commons, let alone making tactical investment/spending to bring about long-term strategic policy goals.

No, the Public Service isn't the forth branch of government.
It's the apparatus and corporate memory of each of three branches.
One reason Musk and Ramaswamy are going after it, is to destroy the corporate memory.
Once destroyed, the system lose the ability to tell where points of failure will be and when appointees and outsourcers are being self serving.
The second is to get rid of decision makers acting in the public interest.

Just struck me about what's familiar about the federal Liberal's housing policy announcement.
Basically, targeted HomeBuilder, again. Giving the building industry a bucket of money, as per lobbyists request. And just like the last time, I think the money will go directly in land developer's profits, not to builders.
Effect on affordability: Nil.
