oh, that could be a couple of things
I'd look into the following:<li>are you using precompiled headers?</li><li>do your headers include a lot of source files?</li><li>have you tried using clang? I've personally found clang to be faster, though some people say gcc is faster for them</li><li>have you tried using a different linker, such as lld or mold?</li><li>do you have LTO enabled? LTO can slow things down a good bit</li>
for the second one, you can try to use forward declarations for pointer or reference types, which can speed up compilations (because then anything including that header won't include a bunch of other useless stuff)
there's also PIMPL, but it looks dumb

but, I fully intend to not use whatever toolchain they provide lol

I don't think I could have really said it any better myself.
I enjoy spending time obsessing over the smaller details in code.
I *like* to design and re-design an api until it feels nice to use.
I really think that a well-designed api makes a problem not only easier to solve, but will use less lines of code and be more performant.
and that is something that is being lost with the rise of LLMs.
because the LLM doesn't *care* that an api is complete ass. it just generates more code around it that works within the bounds of it. LLMs just lead to larger amounts of code that performs worse.
this is how garry tan is able to ship 38k LOC/day for his fucking blog.
it saddens me imensely that people no longer care about such things.
did they really *ever* care about such things? I'm not sure.
