Last Notes npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak 3/ With the exception of the yard (foot, inch, &c.), which, at their current values, are likely 13th century inventions, all the other traditional units -- not just the names, but the actual values themselves -- are much older than that and are not "Imperial" at all. So hate on the U.S. Customary System all you want (I'm not defending it and don't want to discuss that here), but please don't call it "Imperial." That's just wrong. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak 2/ The Imperial system is a 19th century British invention made necessary by the loss of their standards in the fire that destroyed the Houses of Parliament in 1834. They relabeled the traditional yard and avoirdupois pound as "Imperial" (how typical of them), and created new decimalized versions of the gallon and bushel to compete with the godless French. These new units (and their subdivisions) are quite different from the ones that continue to be used in the U.S. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak 1/ I see some jabber in my masto feed today about U.S. media providing Customary System equivalents to metric units for readers used to working with them. This has nothing to do with the superiority of metric (I'm not going there), but as the author of a book on this subject (bet you didn't know that), I have to point out as a historical fact that the pounds, feet, gallons, and bushels used in the U.S. are not Imperial units and shouldn't be called that. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak #photography #filmphotography I've developed four of the eight rolls of 135 that I took on last week's trip to Champaign and scanned in the first one. All photos on this trip were taken with a Nikon F, and with the exception of a series taken at a swimming lesson that I hope to show later, all were taken with a 35mm f/2 Nikkor lens. I rated Tri-X at 800 and developed it in D-23 1:1. Lots of details in alt text. I fondly remember seeing the band perform "Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" at a rally about a year before their performance at Woodstock. Their first album was precious to us long before that song was recorded. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/08/arts/music/country-joe-mcdonald-dead.html?unlocked_article_code=1.R1A.DqZs.aAgBJpQkMWmz&smid=url-share (free article) npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak @nprofile…hnhd And there were those of us who just couldn't afford color. I watched the entire first run of Star Trek years before I ever saw an episode in color. I was astonished; it had never occurred to me that the series had been filmed that way in the first place. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak #photography #filmphotography #retrobosak Roll 19690043: Riverside (1973) A big jump forward from the late 1960s timeline, which we will be returning to shortly. A few years ago, our co-op in Ithaca decided that the old place was too small (read: intimate) and built a fancy new store utterly lacking the old vibe. It still carries some stuff that's hard to find elsewhere, but now it's just another stop on the shopping circuit. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak Two. https://cdn.masto.host/flxmastohost/media_attachments/files/116/114/863/881/187/215/original/cdb30c8a9ea7feea.jpg https://cdn.masto.host/flxmastohost/media_attachments/files/116/114/863/804/753/688/original/52076a6981052613.jpg https://cdn.masto.host/flxmastohost/media_attachments/files/116/114/863/780/568/676/original/2354bca0ef0ac550.jpg https://cdn.masto.host/flxmastohost/media_attachments/files/116/114/863/842/910/986/original/d7fd96fa926acd87.jpg npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak #photography #filmphotography #retrobosak Roll 19690041: Riverside (ca. 1971) Nowadays co-op groceries are places you go to pay outrageous prices for food that won't actually kill you. I have just left school and started living with Melanie in a hippie hangout on Comer Street called Comer House. A block party has been formed by renting a keg and inviting everyone who can see it to join in. This is a pretty good cross section of the folks among whom we would be living for the next several years. One. Today I got a Google Alert for my 2010 book The Old Measure. It's listed on the web site for an outfit called "bcp." Here's the link: https://bcplifes.shop/products/the-old-measure-an-inquiry-into-the-origins-of-the-us-customary-system-of-weights-and-measures-9780615376264 According to this, they've sold 729 of these already, and "only 4 are left in stock." In my dreams -- I don't think I've sold a dozen copies in the 16 years since it was published. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak #photography #filmphotography #retrobosak Roll 19690002: UC Riverside (1969) More rehearsal photos of the theater department production of "Woyzeck." (Don't worry, there are lots more.) Correction: A few days ago I said that these last rolls were taken on a Mamiya C33. I'm sure that I was very jealous when I took these pictures. When a camera shutter is opened, the film is exposed (laid open) to the outside world; that's why it's called "exposure." Or as the OED quaintly puts it, the film when exposed is "submitted to the action of actinic rays." Nothing like this is happening inside the computer. So I'd rather not overload that very specific term in what appears to me to be an inappropriate context. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak @nprofile…ter0 For me, "exposed" is already taken to refer to what happens when I open the shutter on the camera. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak @nprofile…2xqa Yeah, and I've been resisting this. "Post process" to me is so bound up with what I do with the already positive image that I get from a digital camera (which is very little like what I did in the darkroom) that I'd rather find a different word to describe what I do with the digital neg (which mutatis mutandis is basically identical to what I did in the darkroom). npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak #filmphotography I've been struggling to find a word that replaces "to print" in talking about creating a final positive image from the negative image that I get from a scan. I used to say, e.g., "when I printed this, I dodged the faces." The best that occurs to me now is to borrow "render," making it "when I rendered this" (without further explanation, relying on the reader to figure out my meaning). Does anyone have a better idea? Have I missed something? npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak #photography #filmphotography #retrobosak Roll 19680068: UC Riverside (1968) A rally in support of Presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy. I earlier posted photos taken at the same time from the 196768 collection of unnumbered rolls. Why some ended up there and others in the carefully numbered set labeled "1968" is a mystery; this is typical of the chaotic state in which I found them. You know how if you wash your film in running water, it gets covered with tiny bubbles unless you take it out of the wash and put it back in every few minutes? (You knew that, right?) So when a brand new film (Kentmere 200) came my way, of course I had to try it with a developer (D-23) that I'd never used as well. I'd been meaning to try out D-23 for a while and had the chems, so now was the time. This would also be the first time I'd made a dev from scratch since 1985. But once you've found the right base exposure for a given set of materials and lighting setup, you are careful enough in taking and processing your negatives that you will soon be able to make a good guess at print exposure just by looking at the negative, and at that point, the most efficient (easiest/laziest) way will be to make one test with small increments on other side of that guess. Doubling is too coarse to find the exact right exposure. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak @nprofile…2xqa I've never tried burning/dodging a contact print, so this is new to me, too. But it occurs to me that an advantage of doing this under a collimated source like an old enlarger is that you can use your hands (halfway between source and paper) to modulate the adjustments more fluidly and easily than you can do it with cards, just as you can when making enlargements. (This intuitive physical engagement is something that I greatly miss in digital post-processing.) npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak @nprofile…2xqa It's surprising at first how aggressive you have to be in dealing with areas like that sky. But this is why the metaphor is "burning in." The negative can take a lot more of this than the output of a scanner can. I've never found it necessary to use log exposure times for the test. After the first few successful prints, you will know the center of the possible range by inspection and then you can just use 5-second intervals (say) with that estimate in the middle. npub1hm2k929djcenq3auvmselk7h0tf78vszh495ld0cnttpv62apmlqyz37ks Jon Bosak #photography #filmphotography #retrobosak Roll 19680062: Riverside (1968) More 1968 wedding reception.
