But once you've found the right base exposure for a given set of materials and lighting setup, you are careful enough in taking and processing your negatives that you will soon be able to make a good guess at print exposure just by looking at the negative, and at that point, the most efficient (easiest/laziest) way will be to make one test with small increments on other side of that guess.
