maybe you're not completely serious, but this kind of thing is an issue here. I know many don't care about growth but that's obviously deterred when potential newbies expect their ability to federate requires quite close agreement on politics etc. imagine trying to get people to move from AOL to the web if browsing was so tightly controlled. of course unwanted tagging should be policed harshly, but that's like email spam. rarely stumbling on stuff you don't like is life on the web.

I disagree. The only servers that should be blocked are those that fail to address their users who engage in unwanted tagging. That's harassment/abuse. It drives away users. I could support a list of servers somehow so verified.
But to go further than this is a kind of censorship of content allowed elsewhere on the web. Stuff we basically never stumble on while browsing. Without algos here, it will never be forced on us.
I can easily see posts critical of Israel called antisemitic.

Netflix and Spotify and Substack are easier than if you were turning on and off a Patreon subscription for each show, musician and blog. The idea is easier than all of them. One donation bucket in your bank account that gets divvied up and automatically goes everywhere, even if you only listened to one song by an artist once. I think people would slowly support that model over everything else if they understood the potential.

I guess so? there's no actual harm if nobody who is offended by the comment sees it. like all the horrible stuff on the web that you never browse to. I guess we could say those sites are problems too but that reality is not something people usually complain about, except maybe when some wanted to scare us off the web in the 90s. it was a trade-off for letting people create their own sites. this moderation approach lets us share a social network with people we don't agree with 100%.

that sounds great but just like people have different interests based on experience and who we are, nations do too. democracy works because while we're pulling in different directions, nobody has more power than another. and overwhelming force is rested in a power above any of us.
the problem at the international level is we haven't done this yet. the US talks about respecting everyone (usually) but can mostly act as it wishes. same with other local big powers.

What constitutes the bad moderation at #bluesky?
For me it's tough because wanting a diversity of perspectives also requires making it as easy as possible to find a place with different policies while not losing your connections, and never having stuff pushed on you via algos etc.

crypto promises a way to directly send money electronically and maybe build programs around it. it does that poorly but until we have another good way to do that, lots of good people will be interested in it. a way around middlemen like PayPal, Venmo and Patreon etc. maybe an alternative to Amazon etc having our information.
please help us build an open protocol for money transfer from bank to bank, like we have here for social media with AP.

social media is a public square, but not inherently corporate, algo driven or full of ads. it's what I want the fedi to be. anybody should be able to post anything on the web and the public decides it should go viral. everything ties into it and the power of money to decide what we know about goes away, replaced by the democracy here.

with AT (before today's announcement of fully decentralized relays I think), everything went thru the bluesky relay. as just happened in Turkiye, their govt asked and BS complied to make sure some posts were not seen by their users in that country. there's been reporting but no statement by the company.
with AP, it's only about the posting and reading servers.
and big picture long term, overall network decentralization is key. which model will more likely lead to that?

my focus is getting to "democracy of reach", the necessary addendum to "freedom of speech" vastly expanded by the web. it will mean people decide what goes viral. huge implications in culture generally, not just as a better way to do social media.
anyway, I see how AP does that, basically promising a future of no gatekeepers between a site run by a govt or news outlet with social capacity and the public.

We could do that but it would make for a much less interesting place and if it had started that way, there would have much less interest in building it by everybody but the left. but we're not a group app that enables private communities. a fedi server is much more a portal to the larger social web than a place in itself. the norms that predominate make some feel safer than anywhere else except a private group app, but drive many others who want more of a public square away.

it's our money that we've collectively decided through a democratic process to spend on something. It's not free, the govt pays for something it gets. and regarding business, all contracts are backed up by the govt.
we have a real problem between libertarians and establishment PR. the govt does lots of good but also fucks up. democracy and the rule of law play out in complex ways. but both sides speak without nuance. this prevents the hard work of making it better.

sad I missed this one. we need a social media for the public square and attention democracy, and an agreed upon best way to do groups. maybe they overlap but people need to think about what they are doing and what they want out of both. otherwise we'll get lots of complaining and both won't get to be as nice as they could be.

On a decentralized social network, your government has to go after every independent local server that wants to post the stuff they don't want you to see. And you can always use a foreign server accessing that content on foreign servers that they can't touch. The government has to shut down every way to try to access those servers outside the country. #SocialWeb
On #bluesky, they just have to ask/threaten the company running the relay for the entire service to block access in your country.

I get where you're coming from but it's more complicated imo. ultimately it's an issue of govt contracts. everybody can decide who they work with based on politics, but when the govt does that, it becomes a 1A concern. so govt can either do it all in house or do less stuff.

my understanding is very different. the federal money is for research that the govt wants to do and contracts out to private universities to do. Trump is saying we're breaking those contracts unless you stop teaching the stuff we don't like (that we don't actually give you any money to teach).

I believe he said in this interview that we needed to shut down but not as long as we did. that other issues were not properly weighed and that there was not enough consideration given to our inability to shut down compared to an authoritarian China.

I want to know where most people still get their "news feed", using that term in the most expansive sense. What system are they letting tell them what to pay attention to, of those things outside their direct experience like family, friends and neighbors? And not the people/orgs that do the reporting, but what process puts the next item in front of their eyes or ears.

thinking it thru, it begs that we be very careful and deliberate in how quote posts get implemented. The US has an ACH (automatic clearing house) system where banks have a routing number and then we have account numbers. What I don't get is why we can't modernize this into something like a username/domain to make transferring money like sending an email. then let us build that into apps. also #FedNow is starting up.

I just want a protocol to make transferring money work more like fedi than Facebook etc. maybe we weaken the power of credit card companies in the process. and stop empowering sites like Amazon by storing our billing info with them.

AFAICT #Section230 defaults the internet to small, independent websites letting people post dumb shit. And that's great cause sometimes that stuff isn't actually dumb, it was just unlikely to be thought of or said, especially by the wealthy/powerful. It was low-key genius.

I understand the libertarian argument that the ability to regulate invites corruption, but what's the alternative if the threat of competition isn't protecting us? Just let them fuck us? again and like always, I am not against people giving their outsider opinions. or even bad info if they truly think it is correct. but don't act like you're smarter than people with more knowledge and experience. if you think they are lying for some reason, explain the details. don't just say they are Dems etc. engage your critics in good faith.

people are comfortable with paying so much per month for Netflix, Spotify etc. for example, if we could instead slowly get them to pay that to creators using #peertube or making #ccmusic, we encourage more of that work, make content available to all, help culture be more independent of pressures to conform and help lessen the concentration of wealth. journalism unencumbered by ads & media owners (coupled with decent civics education) would be great for democracy.

Maybe #DOGE is trying to make government more efficient like everybody wants, so any "mistakes" should be excused. But what if that's PR for those "mistakes" that are actually just small accidental exposures of a larger demolition mission?
We're all seeing it how we want to, and in this age of media distrust, unlikely to let any reporting or punditry shake us from those priors. Unless we can be personally sure of something they do that affects us positively or negatively directly.

very excited about this. it addresses a ton of concerns I've had. but how do we make users comfortable with the amount they are spending and feel like they are in control?
my thought was that you set a monthly amount in your banking app that you're comfortable with, and it gets divided up later based on reporting from your various browsers and media apps. percentage of total time works for media but not really the browser or clicks. #PublicPatron
