It really wasn't that long ago that we were counting on (and even boasting about) Canada's boreal forests as vital carbon sink and source of healthy air.
(Natural Resources Canada still claims that: "Canada’s boreal forest (270 million hectares) stores carbon, purifies the air and water, and regulates the climate. Because a large portion of the world’s boreal zone lies in Canada (28% or 552 million hectares), this country’s boreal forest affects the health of the environment worldwide. Careful management of these forests therefore benefits both Canada and the world."

A spot-on assessment of Carneyism.
Revulsion at Liberal cynicism, which long predates J Trudeau, is arguably the root cause of much of the reactionary politics in Canada. If Libs actually did what they promise on the campaign trail instead of selling us out every time, everything would be much more peaceful.

Breaking the grip of anti-circumvention laws, even if we do it all together, is probably not possible until we have functioning alternatives to the US giants in place, particularly in financial services, but it's still a great goal.
The US may have expropriated Tiktok's US revenues, but can US tech corporations continue to grow and thrive without using most of the rest of the world as it's colonies?
This is a war and we should not be shy about wanting to win.

In the optimistic spirit of the original post: I'd like to see legislation to make this impossible or at least disastrously expensive for the perpetrators. Just 2 days after reporting that "Meat is a leading emissions source – but few outlets report on it, analysis finds," #TheGuardian has "How the world’s taste for soya is eating Brazil’s Amazon," which never mentions that most soya is grown as livestock feed not for direct consumption by humans.
It's NOT the world's taste for soya that is the problem, it's the world's appetite for beef and pork.

Sure, many (maybe even most) Canadians do that most of the time, but expecting it still seems like a bit of a gamble.

In Toronto there's a well-established pattern of police ticketing cyclists for minor infractions while letting drivers go with just a warning for much more serious ones (to say nothing of minor consequences for killing or maiming cyclists).

GDP measures the churn of money through the economy not the long-term value of what it buys. Money spent on things that destroy lives and property or quickly go to the garbage is counted as equal to that spent on things that nurture people or last for generations.
GDP growth depends on perpetuating poverty because the poor spend while the rich hoard.
