An #Audi #driver in South #Essex got #prison for #driving at 110 mph ( 177 km/h ) on the highway - this is well over the 50mph (80 km/h) limit for that area. he crashed into 3 #Council workers on ride on lawnmowers, causing 2 of them serious injury (hence #jail time even after a guilty plea).
He claimed the "brakes locked up" - vehicle was a mid 2000s Audi S3 ( Typ 8P ) which has very good brakes with ABS if well maintained, but those won't save anyone from driving too fast for the conditions - in a car review from that area there's warnings against pushing it to the rev limiter and that it can become "uncomposed" - the video from the #Police clearly shows him doing exactly that..

A #maths teacher in NW #England has been banned for 2 years for getting drunk at a workplace social outing to the point he consumed 10 pints ( 5760 ml ) of beer, attacked 2 police officers and a security guard, and got a suspended prison sentence!
He has to do 25 days rehabilitation activity and 200 hours of unpaid work.
you could make a maths question out of all this, but its probably a better lesson for PHSE and a warning of why overindulgence in #alcohol is a bad thing..

Went to the village shop to get some food and returned to find the PC fully locked up ( needed a power cycle to restart!)
I suspect this is more fault of #browsers with multiple tabs left open (there's an open issue for this on #Firefox) than any flaw with #LinuxMint itself, on top of websites being more bloated and #adtech scripts and #adblockers fighting one another.
Successfully installed #Anydesk on #Linux PC, so can access #XFCE desktop remotely from my Windows laptop (we use Anydesk a lot for remote support)

Rescued #Thinkpad #T440 with #FanError (the tiny earth wire on the fan comes adrift).
Not fun to solder (even with microscope) as <0,5mm diameter cable, got colophony from rework flux pen all over my hands (nasty sticky stuff), and it was *not* pretty soldering but thought it worth a try
New thermal paste applied and #laptop reassembled, it starts up now which is better than before
It will be used as a backup laptop for the office (which is why its getting Windows as I haven't yet been able to evaluate Linux Mint for office staff use) and for the online training that new care staff have to do as part of their induction process..

YouTube now seem to think I am going to catch #sneks for Jesus (I'm sure Jesus won't mind if I remain in Blighty, where the only venomous #snek I know of (a black #adder - they are real, I saw one a few years back in South Oxfordshire when I lived in SE England) is 30 miles/48 km from here and won't bother me, and the South African dude can carry on catching them (he always lets them free afterwards away from all the people).

I only have the lawn mowed every few months (in return for valeting a van used by the maintenance department at my work).
I've seen all sorts of wildlife including butterflies and various red-listed species, in spite of 6-7 cats also literally fighting each other for space in the garden (but they don't even bother the birds as the tree is too tall), and this is a garden in an outer suburb (so not /that/ far away from the town centre)

I presume he lives on that estate and was driving home from work, what worries me is main use for such a #truck *is* roadworks, such a driver should be familiar with them and the extra hazards they pose.
I wonder if he was even sober, people like that make the #roads less safe for everyone else on them (and its worse if they are the same ones working on them!)
This is also likely why drivers of such vehicles end up moaning their fleet managers have filled them with cameras and telemetry..

last night had bastard in flatbed truck honk me (at 03:00, illegal at night ) because he thought I was taking too long to get through #roadworks where barriers, cones etc had fallen in the road due to #wind - makes you wonder if folk are #driving around like zombies as from seat of a truck you would have clearly seen these debris - or if I wasn't there, he would have sped through and run over the roadworks infrastructure as he isn't paying for the truck and isn't bothered if it gets scratched up
At one point I thought truck was following me and was increasing distance between my car and looking for escape route (I /could/ leave it behind even faster but didn't want to take more risks unless absolute last resort), in the end driver turned into notoriously sketchy estate near me >>

Presumably this is deliberate, to discourage SUVs and other larger vehicles from that lane whilst letting through smaller ones - I think it needs more signs on approach (like a similar #TrafficCalming scheme in Britain would use), but surely its obvious to those in larger #cars that their vehicle may not easily fit through that gap, and they should take the lane to the left?

@nprofile…la7y interesting that they've picked a relatively affluent (and inland!) part of the country to launch this policy rather than the coastal areas, and that whoever wrote the blog post is clearly smarter than the average "take back are country" type.
I've only ever seen two relatively depth policy statements from Reform, they are about limiting immigration and also rolling back environmental protection/regulation in favour of private car ownership and fossil fuel use - and alas; that seems to be enough to gain them significant real support across the country...
(I'm not sure if full on purges of migrants are as popular as they think, folk often *want* the cheap cigs and the £10 car wash and nor do they want to work in frontline health/social care or high pressure delivery jobs)

This man was driving way too fast on the #m1motorway in #Buckinghamshire - he clouted armco of the central reservation and busted front wheel/driveshaft - and carried on driving to a petrol station!
It seems he did not call 999 himself as he was committing a DUI offence at the time - but was tracked down via #CCTV and brought before Crown #Court - he pleaded guilty and got 22 months in #jail due to the risk caused to other road users (he will likely serve about 8 months of that inside)

I read your other toot about some epic chef work at 05:00 or similar and 120-140 people being fed - I thought you were working at some senior home but thats a lot more people than such places usually house, it reminded me of the "répas des ouvriers" they used to have in some French towns and villages (at least until 1980s) where they are feeding all the road/construction workers (rather than them having to eat junk food)

These got the balance right between ads and content (I even find the ads interesting to read from a historical point of view).
The biggest problem with modern websites is without adblockers they deliberately push ads in front of content, to the point where many are unusable on a mobile device (especially for an older person with presbyopia who might be struggling with small text to start with)

During the 1980s, I spent a week being shown round various Telephone Exchanges as part of work experience with British Telecom.
One thing that sticks in my mind is their architecture was very similar to school buildings of the same era - there must have been standard design frameworks for these kind of functional public buildings which needed a lot of floor space.
It would be easy from the air to get these mixed up (in modern days both often have mobile phone masts on the top due to height) and comms infrastructure is always a target in wartime (whether or not "rules of war" permit targeting supposedly civillian infrastructure)

I set up telephone systems for various healthcare facilities (albeit slightly smaller ones).
For large hospitals this is usually done when the Telephone Exchange can't use presentation numbers on ISDN (a different CLID being presented to the actual number the call originates from) - this is a limitation of some digital exchanges widely used in both UK and NZ and they don't want return calls landing on an understaffed and overwhelmed hospital switchboard as opposed to the admin/call centre which books the appointments (which can be some distance from the actual hospital).
It should stop as more of these circuits are ceased and replaced with VOIP trunks..

I don't know the exact rules in NZ/Aotearoa but with VOIP telephone circuits its not uncommon to be able to set your own outbound caller ID (for legitimate purposes) - reputable providers limit it to numbers where they've seen the bill or make you agree to not misuse the service, but not all VOIP providers comply.
In UK was also not uncommon for legit healthcare provider calls to use WITHELD / Anonymous because the outbound calls were being made from a different number to where inbound calls were received but this is far less common nowadays as healthcare facilities start using VOIP with presentation numbers enabled.
I would suggest reporting this to both the health authority and the Communications Ministry..

WTF is going on in this area? There have been *two* fatal RTCs around the #Hindhead #tunnel in #Surrey close to each other (this report is the second one, there was a different one a couple of weeks ago).
I can't see anything obvious around the tunnel or its surroundings that would cause #RoadSafety problems, its a relatively new stretch of road with what appears to be plenty of room.
Anyone here live nearby? Does this area become particularly congested around rush hour, encouraging risky moves by #drivers ?

A few days ago (maybe after the same picture was tooted?) folk were pointing out that solar panels are an obvious target during wartime - this doesn't mean they /shouldn't/ be installed and can increase resilience alongside battery backup - but they are not a panacea in an unstable world.
Even in a "stable" country they and their associated infrastructure must be guarded as there's various unpleasant ways they can be sabotaged (I'm a hardware engineer and have to keep the power on for kit that is used to look after vulnerable people so keep a close watch on this sort of stuff and energy security in general)

At least its not like the late 80s where Ronan O'Rahilly encouraged Adje to link two transmitters to the same antenna by modulating them with 50 Hz from the 230/400V ships generator - this led to a flashover and a wideband electromagnetic pulse across Europe with the Cold War still active - I'm not surprised both DTI and the PTT Radio Controle Dienst busted them *hard* not long afterwards..

@nprofile…ttga I grew up with this station from mid 1980s - in those days microcomputers had near 0 EMC shielding (the EU only insisted on it it around late 80s/early 90s), so VHF/FM was wiped out whenever I wanted to use my computer but MF was listenable (with maybe a bit of extra hiss)

@nprofile…la7y makes you wonder how bad it was when we were kids and same things were happening in that part of the world - and even if your parents let you watch the news (mine did) there was a limit to what was shown, partly due to broadcasting regulations but also the camera operators had to use 16mm film and then get it out of the warzone to be developed (and this all took a few hours or days)

#RadioCaroline has lost programme audio altogether and is transmitting dead air now (more likely due to the ropey LTE connectivity across East Anglia - nowadays they use a 15cm LTE antenna hidden in the mast of the Ross Revenge (they aren't allowed to use the TX thats on there and I don't think it works anyway as PTT RCD NL ripped out a lot of the vital parts during the 1990 raid - I think RDI (Rijksinspectie Digitale Infrastructuur) literally only returned them last year...

its possible they deliberately increased treble at expense of bass for more range (or because of complaints audio sounded "muddy"), as on my 1990s Coomber schools receiver (100% analogue) I had to turn down treble or else I get hiss/noise from QRM (likely from VDSL/SOGEA line in here)
Some European Communications Ministries (including Ofcom UK and likely RDI NL as well) are allowing full 9 kHz audio bandwidth on AM (increased from 6,3 kHz) once more as compared to 1980s there are way fewer stations on MF (a lot of Northern European commercial stations and even PSBs have stopped using this band - its still used in Southern Europe which is why Caroline can't go to 25 kW or they would interfere with RTVE Spain (MF radio was valuable there during the major power cut)

@nprofile…h7sh there was a big push to open data standards about 15 years ago, also the UK govt use a lot of Oracle based systems where CSV is the only half reliable export method that is less likely to produce data that isn't completely mangled..
UK govt still mostly uses MS365 for everything internally and closed down and outsourced a lot of its in house IT departments, but I've worked in public service in the 2000s and CSV was widely used when exchanging data between different systems..

@nprofile…wgku I don't know exact stats but its a similar situation in England, which causes young women to end up in bad situations (they can be attracted to and become dependent for transport from a lad with a car who turns out to be a misogynist) - it also embeds car dependency as same lasses understandably feel safer and more independent in their *own* cars (although the decline in younger people having licences may be as much to do with the cost of getting them as gender)
Councils would also need to take other actions such as not turning off street lights at night, which makes folk feel unsafe and can't be *that* much of a saving now all the lamps are LED rather than sodium, and keep a sharp eye on the streets (no good having a boom in cycling if its dominated by angry young men)

#MetPol have arrested 20 year old and 15 year old males on suspicion of stirring up the #online "school wars" posts attempting to encourage #violence across high #schools in #London and beyond (I've seen versions of these for #Ipswich schools as well).
I'm unaware of there being any actual confrontations stemming from this online campaign - reality (even when I was a teen and Internet didn't exist) is that teens aren't /that/ inclined to fight merely because they are from different schools, rivalry usually starts off due to competition for girls / territory etc in the physical space which isn't that easy to stir up from 100km away..

One one level its likely a "good" thing this serious/fatal #collision in #London appears to be a genuine mistake rather than anything more sinister.
When I first heard about it a year ago and realised offender was white and the victims all of multicultural ancestry I feared the worst..
I do feel that his /employers/ should also be in Court or at least investigated by Health and Safety Executive - his #driving errors do match that of someone genuinely unfamiliar with an electric van (or any automatic vehicle) - but surely he should have had opportunity to tell his boss that was the case.
Was he fearful to do so due to time pressures, fatigue (having driven all the way from #Southampton) or hubris/machismo (or all of these things?)

Getting into #drug dealing to the level these lads were at ages you - I'd originally thought they were old skool ravers closer to my age (or at least 30-something Millenial party folk), not still in their 20s!
As a former #partydrugs user I'm torn about the #sentencing - it seems harsh when there was 0 violence involved with the #drugs themselves - but continued #MDMA and #ketamine use *does* fuck people up in the long term and they appear to have previous for fighting their own siblings in the middle of a Co-op in #Sheppey #Kent which is precisely the kind of sketchy impulsive behaviour taking too much drugs can lead to (the emotional ups and downs can really play games with your mind, and not good ones..)

This man clearly deserved to be nicked and sent to #prison - horrendous #driving under the influence that caused a #crash leading to a pedestrian being seriously injured and permanently disabled - but its also a sobering reminder of just how much #CCTV is about (including on suburban residential streets) round here, and how #dashcams are used as an increasing part of evidence gathering..

In this report she mentions a *different* pub to the one next door to her house - looking around the area she is essentially surrounded by such venues.
This matches my experience about 6 years ago when I went for a drive around #Woodbridge and encountered a 20mph area where I had to be very careful due to good natured but drunk jaywalkers staggering around and it wasn't *that* late, only about 20:30
She still doesn't want to criticise pubs or locals and has apparently lived there 22 years without problems - aside from the #planning issue, its definitely something Licensing and the Police need to look into - if they are from "other towns", how are they getting there? That area of #Suffolk is highly car-dependent and mostly lacks public transport at evenings)

@nprofile…gz5x in England for vocational courses (our equivalent of trade school) you can usually only get funding for the limited age range 16-19 (senior high school years - compulsory education here is age 4-19), anyone older than that has to fund their own learning and then there's all the problems of actually getting paid employment I mentioned..

I coded a RAT for the schools networked computers in 1986, it had privilege escalation, could send remote code to other machines and was hidden to look like a wordprocessing program (UK school computers had a text/semi graphics mode with the Philips Teletext/Viewdata chip SAA5050, each screen took only 1kb and and the one I used had banked memory so I could swap between the wordprocessor and the RAT control screen with a few keypresses).
Today a teenager would be arrested for that and referred to PREVENT anti-terrorism scheme..

In Britain this is partly true - you still often have to go to college but the fees are less than a degree course and young people (aged 16-19) can often get funding - *but* many employers are too lean to take on apprentices, apprentice wages are still low, employers often holds the final sign off of their qualifications to ransom and the work environment isn't that good (a work colleagues partner ended up quitting being a sparky to start his own business selling ornamental fishes and corals). This is the same throughout all the trades and automotive.
If you look at tradesmen and mechanics these days you see a lot of grey and bald heads and those who aren't originally from outside Britain are mostly in age 40s to 70s..

The same woman was perfectly happy to complain to the Council about a solar panel scheme next door to her business elsewhere in #EastSuffolk - but chose to overlook #planning laws when it comes to her own house.
#Suffolk is a big place by the standards of #England - why /choose/ to live next door to the pub, then wonder why there are drunk people wandering the streets?

@nprofile…sqq9 Its likely the PO cherry some affluent areas to get these telephone sets - I remember in 1970s we had a push button Trimphone which wasn't that common, but we literally lived almost next door to the Telephone Exchange which also acquired a TXE2 by late 1970s / early 80s.
Whats more worrying about the "1970s memories" AI is how much they get *right* - clearly they must be going through everyones "memories" photos on places like Facebook etc (including more esoteric stuff like the 776 telephone, as its the sort of thing that repeatedly appears on FB groups)

there's a variation of a maybe 0,25 - 0,5s lag between DTT TV sets all in the same building (I noticed it when I worked on maintenance in a senior home and there was sportsball or something else popular that everyone was watching in their rooms and I was walking down the corridors), but for whole seconds delay thats more likely due to streaming services..

Thomson local was first published in 1980 yet picture is set around 1974/5 - they've tried to make the telephone set look like a 746L (with lettered dial surround), which would have been still found in some areas well into the late 1970s even though everywhere had gone all figure dialling by 1970 (and when letters returned to telephone keypads in 1990s, along with the rest of Europe we switched to the USA standard (with letter O mapped to 6 rather than 0)

#AI picture #fail from #YouTube channel about "UK life in 1970s" - 746 #Telephone set appears to be a mix of a correct 746 and a USA Western Electric set (although not as bad a conflation as I've previously seen), its got a coiled *line cord* and a bizzarely oversized "GPO" block terminal (which appears to have been conflated with larger block terminals only used for multiple lines/extension distribution and/or aux bellset, but that wouldn't be put so near the main telephone with its own bell, it usually ends up on the middle stairwell /landing of larger houses so those upstairs wouldn't miss telephone calls)
Ofc if you aren't familiar with the correct infrastructure of this era, it would be easy to assume this is all correct..

I didn't even realise it went *that* far back, (although to be fair as I've never been that much into USA rap since early 90s when I got into the UK rave scene I was thinking more about recent developments in UK)
I can still remember how rave struggled to get radio airplay due to the mainstream music/radio industry being paranoid about the drugs angle (at least until mid-late 1990s, when the alcohol companies slowly took back some of the power by encouraging more booze at rave events)
That and the "plastic gangster" behaviour has fucked up just about every music scene and nightlife (even in Ipswich, 80km from London, all our main venues have got closed since 2000s due to increasing violence and sketchiness and folk on the streets hate and fear each other now)

A lot of folk on the rave scene were at least temporarily diverted from getting deeper into crime - but I think the harder issue that few seem to want to discuss is the grime/drill scene seems to be literally middle class suits exploiting young working class lads as a "multicultural minstrel show" whilst glorifying the behaviour that makes London and other big cities (and even provincial towns) a worse place..

@nprofile…jnnp I was deeply involved in the rave scene for many years and even illegal events and pirate radio stations, but at least in 90s/00s we put a hard limit on what could be said on air, even drugs references had to be held down a bit and chatting about violence etc was a hard no, the Police would report you to DTI/Ofcom and authorities *would* come down on you harder (OTOH if you were a bit more sensible they left you alone!)
I saw all these boundaries slipping away in the 2000s, the whole scene got sketchier to the point it stopped being safe for young folk to be involved in and it became a lot harder to criticise authorities for clamping down...

@nprofile…jnnp to get a 12 stretch for a *guilty* plea at Crown Court suggests he would have been looking at 15-20 had it gone to full trial, and "previous bad character" may have been considered (there's rather a lot of traffic offences in his previous, as well as other genuinely bad evil stuff).
Should the music business really be rewarding people like this with careers, no matter how talented they are? It doesn't send a very good message to young people to keep them on the right tracks..

@nprofile…xg4c my late father was Malaysian Chinese, we weren't even that close and he was typical "1970s man" in his other attitudes but he somehow taught me that I should respect women, look after others, be safe on the roads and also be kind to animals - to the point where if I find a bug or spider on the car I carefully catch it and let it out in the yard, so when I get to the highway it isn't yeeted into the live lane at 70 mph/112 km/h (this is also a good opportunity to find out what species it is)
