Do Kids Really Need Structure and Discipline?

“Kids need structure and discipline!”
That’s what most people say.
But do they?
Or does the adult saying this need structure and discipline?
Or maybe… they just believe they do — because that’s what they were told as children:
“You need structure and discipline!”
“Go to school!”
“Do this!”
“Do that!”
“Finish it!”
“Stop now!”
They never stopped to question it. They simply repeated what their parents, teachers, and grandparents — all shaped by the same system — told them.
Yes, sometimes structure and discipline serve us.
But aren’t we — each individual, including each child — the ones who should decide when, how, and to what extent?
Because there’s another kind of discipline — the one that emerges naturally when we’re absorbed in something that fascinates us.
When a child builds for hours, paints, explores, tinkers, or reads out of pure curiosity — no one needs to impose time frames or tell them to “stay focused.”
Focus and flow arise organically.
So maybe the real question isn’t whether children need structure, but whether adults are afraid of what happens without it.
Isn’t it more true that rigid structure and imposed order often become the death of creativity?
Creation is born in chaos.
And chaos isn’t the opposite of order — it’s part of the same cycle.
When you cook, for example, you create. You make a mess. You splash, stir, taste, spill. The kitchen becomes wild with life.
Then you enjoy the meal — and only after, you restore order again: you wash the dishes, wipe the table, put everything back in its place.
It’s a dance between chaos and order — between freedom and form.
And that’s how learning and life really flow, when they’re not forced into someone else’s schedule.
Rather than giving kids a rigid structure for their time —
6:15 am wake up, wash, get dressed
6:45 am breakfast
7:00 am brush teeth
7:30 am shoes, jacket, school
8:00–5:00 pm school’s structure
5:00 pm homework
6:00 pm dinner
7:00 pm screen time
8:00 pm bed
— they can find their own structure through play, curiosity, and meaningful daily life.
Children don’t need a timetable to grow; they need space to explore.
They find rhythm in free play, in projects that light them up, in the gentle flow between shared meals, time outdoors, or weekly gatherings.
They learn naturally from the living examples around them — watching their parents cook, fix things, tend the garden, have conversations, rest, create, or care for others.
And even more so, when they’re invited in — to help bake the bread, fold the laundry, feed the animals, or join in a parent’s passion — learning becomes real, embodied, and connected to life itself.
Children grow through participation, not instruction.
Through observation, not obligation.
Through meaning, not management.
When we trust their natural rhythms, we discover that structure isn’t something to be imposed — it’s something that emerges.
A living rhythm that breathes with the family, with the seasons, with the energy of the day.
That’s when discipline transforms from a rule to follow into a love for what they’re doing.
And life itself becomes the teacher.
Let’s Reflect
When we loosen our grip on control, we make room for connection.
When we stop managing every hour, we begin to see our children — and ourselves — as whole beings in motion, finding balance naturally between chaos and calm.
Maybe the real lesson isn’t about teaching kids discipline at all,
but about remembering how to trust life’s own rhythm —
and allowing it to guide us, too.

Learning in my school years felt awful — pressured, disconnected, and heavy.
In my 20s, learning came through brutal life lessons that stripped away illusions and built resilience.
In my 30s, the inner work I had started in my mid-20s finally began to bear fruit — I learned more about myself, unlearned old patterns, and realized that growth often comes with pain. I also discovered that learning by doing is truly my way of learning.
Now, in my 40s, learning feels different — lighter, more natural, exciting, loving, and in flow. It’s no longer about proving or surviving, but about expanding, creating, and remembering who I truly am.
And this is why I choose to unschool my daughters — to spare them those brutal cycles of learning and unlearning, and to let them experience from the very beginning that learning and life can be joyful, connected, and free.

What social life?
Sitting in a room with same aged children who you’re not allowed to talk to during the class or cooperate with?
5 min talking in the hallway with your best friends or being bullied or witnessing bullying creating more fear of being ‘different’ that will stick in your adult life so you walk around trying to fit in, be liked, look and have what the other ‘cool’ people have?
All adults are authority figures you either hate, fear or want to please…
I don’t want my children to have that kind of social life. My children are with people of all ages every single day, talking to people in shops, the street, parks etc.
They play and argue every day learning to resolve problems with each other and adults treat them respectfully.
We travel and get to know other cultures where they learn social skills.
I’d like to quote a father who once replied to your question saying: ‘I don’t want my children to socialize with these fucking idiots’
Do you want your kids to be surrounded by ‘fiat-minded’ people and learn their way or be around freedom-minded people?
We also don’t need to be with 30-1000 people every day. Especially for introverts this is not just exhausting but torturous.
Being able to be alone is a skill most have forgotten. They need people, distraction and have addictions of all sorts to not feel alone.

Debunking School’s “Educational Necessity”
Schools were never designed to raise free, fulfilled, and curious human beings.
They were created during the industrial era to produce obedient workers and compliant consumers — people who could follow orders, meet deadlines, and fit neatly into a system.
Yet somehow, over time, we’ve been made to believe:
“We need school to get a proper education and do well in life.”
Let’s debunk that myth.

1. Everything they teach in school can be learned outside of it — but the things that truly matter can only be learned outside of it.
You can learn math, reading, science, and languages through real life, curiosity, and purpose.
But school often prevents you from learning emotional intelligence, self-trust, decision-making, creativity, independence, and how to live in alignment with your values — the very skills needed for a meaningful life.

2. Most of what we “learn” at school isn’t learned at all — it’s memorized for a test and then forgotten.
The information that sticks is what we actually use, need, or love — which means we would have learned it naturally anyway. Real learning follows interest, not instruction.

3. The time spent memorizing what you soon forget could have been used to master something you’re truly passionate about.
Instead of years of forced learning, imagine years of self-directed exploration — building, creating, experimenting, and following curiosity wherever it leads.

4. True learning and deep understanding only come through experience.
Not by being told what’s true, but by discovering it yourself — through trying, observing, failing, adjusting, and trying again.
Schools teach about life. Real life teaches through life.

I think this is the case in most countries. We’re the minority wherever we are and most people believe school is necessary and the one and only way but just this week I had a chat with our local butcher and his assistant. While paying the butcher his assistant asked me ‘where are your daughter? In school?’ (Because the usually accompany me)
I said: No, they don’t go to school.
We had a 10min conversation in which I explained many reasons why schools are a bad choice when it comes to learning. They simply couldn’t argue against what I had to say. They kept agreeing with me and in the end the assistant even said: schools are like jails.
I had the same experience with many people here in Madeira and Germany.

How to Fiat-Proof Your Kids
- Don’t send them to school.
- Teach them to spot manipulation.
- Limit the consumption of all fiat products (including food, music, movies etc) and explain why.
- Live your sovereignty — they’ll copy it.

Us at work – it’s not always easy being an unschooling parent and not everybody can do it…
…but somebody’s gotta lie on the beach, drink in the sunshine, and make sure the kids are having the time of their lives 😎🌴📚
Jokes aside…
It means blending family, life, and learning into one flow. Sometimes it looks like sunshine and sand, sometimes like deep conversations or tears (like before leaving to come to the beach)
The responsibility is full-time and the rewards are long-term. It’s not always the easy path, but it’s the path that keeps us close, free, and true to ourselves. 🌊☀️

Letter to School Kid Parent
Dear school kid parent,
I know you want the best for your child. I know you love them more than anything in this world. That’s why I am writing to you — not with judgment, but from a place deep in my heart, with love, understanding, and a longing for truth.
I hope you will read this with openness and pause for a moment, because what I am about to share is not often spoken out loud, though many of us feel it in our bones:
School changes your child.
Before you send them away from your loving arms and the warmth of home, their unique character shines, their innocence is intact, their sense of wonder is alive, their curiosity knows no limits. They look at you with trust, with a bond that is natural and unshakable. They want to be with you, learn with you, laugh with you, and grow in your presence. This is what makes them whole.
But school reshapes this.
It teaches them to sit still when their body longs to move.
It teaches them to raise their hand for permission to speak, when their voice deserves to be heard freely.
It teaches them to compete, compare, and measure their worth against others, when in truth their worth is immeasurable.
It teaches them to obey strangers over listening to their own heart and their own family.
It teaches them that learning is a chore, a duty, something done for grades and approval, instead of the joyful, self-driven exploration it naturally is.
Slowly, the spark in their eyes dims. Slowly, they begin to believe that fitting in matters more than being true to themselves. Slowly, they forget that they were once explorers, creators, dreamers.
I know this is painful to hear, but it is the truth many of us have witnessed.
And yet, there is another way.
Children don’t need to be molded — they need to be unfolded. They don’t need to be taught what to think, they need the freedom to think. They don’t need to be standardized; they need to be cherished in their uniqueness.
When a child grows up surrounded by love, family, and a community of caring people, something extraordinary happens. Learning flows naturally — through projects, play, passions, and peers. They learn not because they are forced to, but because life itself is fascinating. They learn responsibility by being included in real life. They learn compassion by being treated with compassion. They learn creativity not by filling out worksheets, but by living in a world that values their ideas and imagination.
And this isn’t just about childhood joy — it’s about preparing them for the future.
We live in times of enormous change. Artificial Intelligence and automation are already replacing traditional jobs. The skills that once mattered most in the school system — memorization, repetition, standardized answers — are now the very skills machines can do better than humans.
The future belongs to those who can do what machines cannot:
- to imagine,
- to empathize,
- to create,
- to collaborate,
- to question,
- to dream.
And those are the very qualities that schools suppress but that natural, free, family-centered learning nurtures.
Your child doesn’t need to be trained for a shrinking job market. They need to be empowered for life — for creating, innovating, building communities, solving problems, loving deeply, and living fully.
And here is something else that is often overlooked: when children grow up whole and unbroken, they don’t just bring joy to their own lives, but to the entire world. A child who learns in freedom becomes an adult who lives in freedom. A child who grows in love brings more love into humanity. A child who is trusted becomes trustworthy.
Dear parent, I know this is not the path most people take. I know it feels safer to do what everyone else does, to send your child to school and hope it will all turn out fine. But the truth is: we cannot outsource childhood. We cannot outsource love. We cannot outsource the one thing our children need most — our presence.
Your child’s time is precious. Their wonder, their laughter, their ideas, their hugs — these years are fleeting, and they will not return. Do not let a system that was never designed for human flourishing steal them away.
You are enough. Your family is enough. Your love is enough. And in choosing to honor childhood, you are not only giving your child the best chance in life — you are also giving the world a gift it so desperately needs: a whole, joyful, capable human being.

Lately, I’ve been posting a lot on Nostr about the paradox of being a Bitcoiner while still sending kids to school.
What I see so clearly is that Bitcoin and unschooling are two sides of the same freedom movement. Bitcoin is about taking back sovereignty over our money. Unschooling is about taking back sovereignty over our children’s learning. Both are about trust, responsibility, and refusing to outsource our freedom to systems that were never built for us.
As we’ve been unschooling Bitcoiners for about 8 years I feel called to be a bridge between these worlds—helping Bitcoin families see that their values naturally lead to unschooling, and showing unschoolers why Bitcoin is an essential piece of living free.

That one sentence says more about modern education than any government policy memo. The school system was shaped around industrial needs—bells, schedules, standardized testing—all designed to mimic factory life. Obedience, repetition, memorization. No room for questioning, autonomy, or purpose.
As a parent, I can’t un-know that. It seems more like participating in a machine than nurturing a life.

My childhood was rich in outdoor time, having a lot of freedom to play and explore our surroundings, however, this was limited to after-school hours and I must admit that I didn’t enjoy school at all. When learning that schools are not just unnecessary but rather harmful in many ways, it was an easy decision to not send our kids there and to value their time and our bond instead. For my own family, I envisioned living in a neighbourhood full of unschooled kids where they could just run outside and play whenever they wanted.
To cut a long story short, I didn’t find it so I decided to create exactly this: A neighbourhood called A Place To Be for us and all other families who want their children to grow up freely.
So, I hope you’ll come and visit us soon in sunny Madeira!

What Barnaby Taught Us About Learning and Free Will
In my personal life, I’ve been engaging deeply with the topic of setting boundaries over the past few months, especially since my husband, who works as a mind coach, had a personal revelation that he shared with me. This theme has since been at the center of many of our conversations and the focus of observation in our own behaviors. It marked a breakthrough moment that triggered a series of insights, leading us to realize that our ability to set boundaries has strengthened significantly. And it feels AMAZING!!!
It’s no coincidence that today, after months of setting it aside, I picked up John Taylor Gatto’s audiobook to finish it.
In the final chapter of *Weapons of Mass Instruction*, the author tells the story of Barnaby, a student who defied the conventions of traditional education with the simple but profound declaration, “I prefer not to.” This phrase, which may sound passive, actually carries revolutionary power. For Gatto, Barnaby’s gentle refusal embodies the spirit of unschooling, the ability to question and reject systems that stifle curiosity and individual growth. It’s a reminder that the ability to say “no” — to exams, to standardized learning, to rigid systems — is a crucial tool in the journey toward true, self-directed education.
In the world of unschooling, we often talk about fostering intrinsic motivation, nurturing curiosity, and respecting the individuality of each learner. Barnaby’s story brings these values into focus. He was not lazy, unintelligent, or defiant in a traditional sense. He was, in Gatto’s words, a young person aware of his autonomy and willing to defend it. By choosing not to participate in exams and evaluations, Barnaby was reclaiming his right to an education that made sense to him. He was rejecting the idea that his worth or abilities could be boiled down to a letter grade or a percentile rank.
Barnaby’s “I prefer not to” resonates deeply with the ethos of unschooling. In an unschooling community, learning is pursued not because it’s mandated, but because it’s meaningful and relevant to each learner’s life. Rather than viewing exams and standardized tests as the ultimate markers of success, unschooling values a deeper, more personalized approach to learning. The pressure to conform, to achieve by external standards, is replaced by an emphasis on exploring passions, discovering strengths, and respecting the natural learning rhythms of each individual.
John Taylor Gatto understood that one of the most powerful things a student can learn is how to refuse what doesn’t serve them. This idea isn’t about shirking responsibility; rather, it’s about exercising free will in a way that aligns with one’s values and genuine interests. Exams, after all, are designed to measure conformity and compliance as much as they are meant to assess knowledge. The freedom to say, “I prefer not to,” is the freedom to prioritize one’s learning journey over the arbitrary demands of the system.
In many ways, Barnaby’s story is also a call to parents and educators. It challenges us to examine our own beliefs about education and question the value of the “academic hoops” students are so often forced to jump through. By encouraging our kids to question, resist, and reclaim their own education, we empower them to take control of their lives and learning.
So when people ask why we don’t send our children to school, Gatto’s response seems the most fitting: “I prefer not to.” It’s a simple yet powerful way to honor our right to an education that aligns with our values.
Barnaby’s journey demonstrates that learning is not a passive act; it’s something alive and full of potential. Through Gatto’s story, we’re reminded that saying “no” to what doesn’t feel right is often the first step toward saying “yes” to a life of authentic, joyful learning. And perhaps, that’s one of the greatest lessons we can give our children: the courage to choose, to think for themselves, and to reclaim the power of their own voice in a world that too often tries to silence it.

We recently bought a car, and I'm very pleased with it, especially since it's a 7-seater, allowing me to transport lots of friends. However, there is one thing that bothers me a bit...
It has an inbuilt 'annoying co-pilot' that tells me what to do, advises me to be careful, and even controls the steering wheel sometimes!!!
Can you imagine?! 😲
When I get 'too close' to a car in front, a big red circle flashes up on the display saying BREAK!
The first few times I saw it, it distracted me quite a lot.
When I don't hold the steering wheel stable at all times, a little orange sign pops up, reminding me to drive in a straight line.
And when I was on the motorway and a second lane opened up to the right, which I wanted to take, the car blocked the steering wheel slightly to let me know I shouldn't leave my route.
From then on, I was very wary of how I was driving, whether any light or sign would appear to warn me, and I was getting nervous about making the car—Silver, we called her Silver—not like my driving.
Crazy, huh?! 😕
For a while, Silver was actually making me doubt my decisions, my way of driving perfectly fine (My dad taught me how to drive at the age of 12, and I have driven in Germany, Mexico, Spain, the UK, and Portugal). I was second-guessing myself until I became aware of the crazy situation:
The car is like an adult telling a child what to do, advising them to be careful, and interfering physically with the kid's actions when they think they might be in danger, even though the child is in tune with their instincts, being aware of the risks and dangers around, and making sound decisions.
A complete no-go at APTB! 😈
Having distracting signs popping up made me nervous and not focused on the road for seconds, which could have made it more likely for me to create an accident!
The same applies to adults telling kids 'be careful,' 'danger,' 'stop,' 'you're about to fall,' 'let me take over,' 'you don't know,' etc. Too much of this and not letting the child set their boundaries will lead to the kid second-guessing their decisions. Studies show that this leds more more accidents!
I've gotten used to all the flashes and signs warning me, and I can ignore them, but maybe I will ask Alex to deactivate these settings 😉
Yeah, I'll get rid of this authority that thinks it knows best because I know better... because I'm part of the real world 😏

I just finished our weekly marketing/branding call with my team: 4 women brainstorming and working towards an outstanding business that offers our members the BEST environment for the whole family, but above all the ultimate learning opportunities for our children.
Something new I have decided for APTB is the following:
You already know that we won't be offering any classes in the beginning and that the kids will take over the structure and schedules for the Blocks bit by bit. What I also said is that we'll have containers available with different kinds of materials in it: tables, chairs, paper, books, a computer, tools, musical instruments etc.
However, today I have made the decision to provide empty containers WITH NOTHING INSIDE 😱 It will be like a blank canvas for the kids and Partners and give the optimal opportunity to go back to the state of just Being (A place to BE), spend our time in nature, getting to know the other people around, and then at some point, kids will ask for things they want and need, like tables, chairs, paper, a book about a specific topic, maybe some tools and material to build something. I don't know what. And that's the beauty about it 😇
A story I told my team to make my point clear is the following: I heard of this Russian unschooling group of kids of different ages who spent their days in the forest among themselves, no adults, no tools or materials available. They started bringing stuff from home that they needed to build things and they created their own environment learning along the way.
2 other mantras I keep telling myself have reinforced my decision:
1. Less is more
2. Do the opposite of what the system would do.

Regarding your comparison of the school/school system to a prison/sentence
From my school experience and almost 10 years of homeschooling my children, I can say that the school system approach stays with a person for long or even forever.
Maybe even more so in the one who fits well into the school system( easy learning, good grades, being good in all subjects without looking for their strengths and passions) than for those who flunk the system, barely pass subjects that do not interest them, and have a life outside school.
This is my experience of good fitting into the school system. The process of de-schooling of myself is a ploughing ground for me.
Despite so many years of homeschooling my children, this school system approach still lingers in me and I sometimes fund it for my children unfortunately. It is almost impossible for me to unschool instead of homeschool. Not only because of Polish school law, but also because my mostly good experience with school. Some kind of paradox I think ;) I have freedom to do different but choose to do the same as I was schooled.
Please, continue Your work :) It is important for people to know, that there are other options than school system, or if they have to put kids to school, they can use it as a help but not the deciding factor to raise Your kids well.
I appreciate messages like this very much. It shows that we're all just humans doing our best. I think whether you decide to send you kids to school, homeschool, unschool or do anything in between, the most important things are:
1. Looking within and unraveling the layers of conditioning
2. Giving our children as much unconditional love as we can
3. Finding what works for your family

Hey Plebbles,
On Saturday, I graduated from a white to a blue belt in BJJ 😎 I must admit that it feels good but I can also see the relation to a school's grade system as a motivation to do better and keep going. I suppose the difference is that I made the choice to practice BJJ, nobody sends me there 4 times a week, I do it because I like it... I'd go every day if I could 😏 Those days will come once I've set up a tatami area at APTB 😀
Anyway, a teenager there who also got a new belt was very upset and when I asked a friend of mine what's up with him, he said 'His mom prohibited him to go to BJJ classes because he's not doing well at school.' This triggered me and I said 'F...g schools!' Although I know it's not the school who denied him his passion...
SUPPORT STRENGTHS, NOT WEAKNESSES
I went on a 5min rant saying to my friend 'Never put school before your children!' and so on. My friend told me about his 5 year old son who will be starting school this year and when he tried to sit him down to teach him something, the boy wasn't interested and didn't want to do it so he left him alone and didn't try again. He could see what I was talking about...
He's concerned about sending him to school but knows that when you want to take your kid out of the system, social services come knocking at your door. Therefore I told him that the important thing is to know that the system is effed up and even though his son will have to go through it, he mustn't be afraid of bad grades and should always remain on his son's side.
After this conversation I realized that it's almost like his son will be serving a 10+ year prison sentence that he will just have to endure and make the best out of. But it can turn into a life sentence because if he gets caught up in the system, the conditioning received during this time, will be the driving force in the next decades, unless he undoes the damage. You can take the prisoner out of jail but it's not that easy to take prison out of the person.
