btw "2" is a symbol that can represent anything linguistically, and the concepts that it represents doesn't have a truth value either (unless you count "truthiness" coercion in dynamic languages, where 0 is "false"). this is likewise not objective because "2" has to be contextualized like any other symbol in a processing context. trinitarian christians might say "three is one" and take that to be a profound universal truth, but even if you agree in-context, you might disagree arithmetically. try making that statement in a programming language and you get "false".
mostly the thing i am commenting on is the idealism and also the strange coincidence that the universal ideal just so happens to align with whoever is stating it. it's not me saying this, it's the universe which is objectively true and agrees with me and is my friend. i can't take responsibility for any of my beliefs or statements because i am only describing a universal truth. i'm just a messenger, i don't make the rules, etc.

@nprofile…z9f3 maybe this is just the classical moral objectivist vs relativist argument but if you're a relativist the idea that morals are objective is already something you disagree with, and the idea that morals have a truth value is likewise inconsistent
being a relativist doesn't justify immoral actions, it just attributes them to something other than the universe. morals are ideals that require some kind of application to be effective. the very fact that people *can* disagree on what is moral is enough to disprove the idea that they are universal (if they were truly universal they would be self-evident and not require agreement)
this isn't even a marxist thing imo, it's just the realization that you aren't the universe (because it's pretty curious how the objective moral truth just so happens to be the thing i agree with)

@nprofile…nptm @nprofile…s2sp do you mean "you" as in me personally or "you" as in some generalized sense? would me personally dropping swicg help anything, now or in 2023? because i'd probably do it if i didn't see a point to it, which is mainly "get the w3c specs into an actually usable state" (if at all possible).
i guess it seems like a problem if you see w3c involvement as a problem, but then i would ask who the constituents are. certainly there was a crowd in ~2017 onward who *really* wanted everyone to know activitypub was a w3c spec and won't stop talking about it to this day. i'm guessing you are okay with excluding those people, but then i wonder how to get anyone else actually on board with whatever it is the goal actually is.
having clear goals and a clear constituency is a prerequisite imo for any attempt to replace activitypub. for example, the spritely institute is doing a lot of work on ocapn in the face of legal threats. off the top of my head i can think of maybe a handful of people who would be interested in doing something outside of activitypub (and i'm in contact with a lot of them lmao)
i don't want to say activitypub is fully sucking the air out of the room but as someone who would rather work toward personal websites and local-first representations, it's frustrating that the idea of an activity is ostensibly described by activitystreams while not being fully usable for describing activity streams. it's frustrating that activitypub is not fully usable for publishing activities. i am not entirely sure of the value of making my own https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controlled_vocabulary if it's going to end up 80% similar to activitystreams. the as2 documents i publish on my website are not readable by any fediverse software anyway, and i'm not sure i would want them to be, if it leads to being misunderstood and mangled that badly.

i think swicg might have been actually renamed to social web cg at some point or social cg but the github org and w3c mailing list / calendar doesn't reflect this at all in their uris because uris aren't supposed to change
re: "we have federated groups": no, we have boost bots. you can't follow a group without being assumed to be a member, and you can't be a member while unfollowing the group. you can't assign roles to people. you can't do rbac without some binary concept of "mods" or "admins" without a definition of what that actually means. you can't generally control groups cross-instance. you can't manually approve certain posts. etc
re: "legitimize" we are in an unfortunate position that the main reason pretty much anyone ever cared about activitypub is that "it's a w3c spec". they don't even care about the spec mostly (how many implementations publish Activity instead of Note?), just the w3c rubberstamp of approval. and it's barely a spec anyway -- just profiles ldp:inbox, defines as:outbox, you can maybe Follow/Like/Announce and even then you will still have problems (no in-spec way to remove a follower...)

even then, syncing all posts and relaying new ones works fine if you care about literally everything. at that point just use bluesky lmao. if you prefer to build relationships between people, instead of between instances, then instance peers is not a good entrypoint. and if you ever want to go beyond instances to p2p (which you should if you care about censorship) then this won't work at all.

@nprofile…vrgz if you take it that way then this just seems like typical voltaireism "i don't like it but i will allow it" as in the games shouldn't be made that way but you should still be able to buy them. but i also think the critiques were about a different type of thing, it's not fair to remove all nuance and characterize it only as "sex bad" because sex and sexualization aren't the same thing. if you play a sex game you know what you're getting into. but it is notable how mainstream culture pushes certain images, like how basically every movie ever shoehorns in a kiss scene at the end for ultimately gratuitous reasons, it's an extremely common trope that Guy Gets Girl, it all feels so artificial and i generally find it cringe. i also don't personally care about this specific person in any way but it feels like people love to hate her regardless of what she actually said or didn't say

you probably want a boom arm to get the microphone closer to your mouth, which makes it pick up less room noise due to lower sensitivity needed, and also tends to make voices sound fuller due to the proximity effect. avoid the cheaper crappier scissor-arm ones that go for like $20 unless you are extremely budget constrained. good mic arms start at around $50 or $60 but you might be able to find a deal as low as $40. yes this makes the mounting more expensive than the actual microphone lol, but it's worth it to get the mic off the desk and therefore less prone to desk vibrations (and as stated before, closed to your mouth)

@nprofile…xfx6 back in 2016/2017 i had just under 500 followers and would get 200k views a month. then i hit 500 and got shadowbanned and my views dropped to 40k/month. i couldn't see my own posts in threads, it was that bad. but i could still see the proud self-avowed nazis in my mentions telling me to get in ovens and sending me sieg heil gifs etc... so i deleted twitter and went all-in on fedi because of that.
if i had to guess, i would say that twitter's shadowbanning code back then would only trigger once an account hit 500 followers exactly, and then it would check how many blocks targeted them, and then it would shadowban accounts over a certain threshold. i was on the wil wheaton blocklist because one time sady doyle accidentally hit cmd+s on a tweet and was scared her mac had gotten hacked and randi harper told her to take it to a genius bar to get formatted and i had the audacity to point out that there was nothing to worry about because it was just a saved webpage. randi harper flipped out on me and added me to her personal blocklist which she also advertised as "99% mras and gaters" and was imported by wil wheaton and prominently featured in wil wheaton's pinned post for years. then i hit 500 followers and boom.

the way around this is to explicitly recognize servers by making them into actors which own everything, or otherwise add a mechanism for hierarchical ownership beyond 1 recursion level (Service owns Person, Person owns Note, only the Service can be communicated with)

a lot of what i'm researching rn is basically how to get information to flow across generic pluggable transports. websub is a transport in the same way that linked data notifications (ldn) is a transport (and activitypub is more or less a profile of ldn). you could pass the same information as an xmpp message. you could pass it via irc (although it would be basically spam to anyone who didn't understand how to parse it)
the patterns of communication and other fundamental building blocks are consistent even when you segregate the protocols themselves by further restrictions. look no further than protocols built on top of other protocols. we could pass plaintext messages over HTTP POST with Content-Type: text/plain. but instead we pass entire HTML documents or ActivityStreams documents or whatever. and those have to be unwrapped one or possibly multiple times -- take the HTTP message and unwrap it to get the Activity out of the body content. then see that the Activity is specifically a Create, so you have to unwrap that to get the object. Then you have to know to unwrap that object to get the content.
in generic terms the best way i can model this is that there is "content" and there is "metadata", and then the two are combined in a container of sorts which consists of "header" (for metadata) and "body" (for content). but we can then treat this entire container as itself body content inside *another* container. how many times you do this nesting is arbitrary but significant. with how most people just shove everything over HTTP these days, you will at minimum have to unwrap the HTTP message. why not just stop there? why not put metadata in HTTP headers? hey at least http sigs will actually mean something then lol

their primary fuckup was the #nymwars bullshit and probably also the forced integration with youtube. they should have not forced a real-name policy, and they should have allowed people to sign into youtube with google+ but maintained the distinction between a youtube channel and a google+ account
other than that, feature-wise it was unparalleled to this day
