At the start of my career I was being paid for the code I wrote.
By the end of my career I was being paid for the code I didn't have to write.
One of the nicest complements I ever got from a coworker was that he was astonished how much I accomplished with so little code. Everything I built was designed to be easily and quickly extensible with minimal changes, I planned my structure for future needs.
Code isn't the hard part, not writing code is, and LLMs are really bad at not writing code.

Programming languages exist as an abstraction layer to allow humans to reason about writing instructions for a CPU. Each languge is built to organize around a different pattern of thought.
So if people aren't bothering to read the code that LLMs generate, if they're completely willing to accept probabalistic app generation, why are they bothering with code at all? Cut out the middle layer, skip the compiler, just start making binaries directly.

Well I just spent the last hour taking a closer look… holy shit is this some good code. This could very well be a strong starting point for the next Bootstrap / MUI. It's all web components done right, with some of the leanest typescript I've ever seen.

My rebuild of the Gender Dysphoria Bible site is nearly finished. I have one big feature left before I start migrating translations into it.
This new codebase is so much nicer. The pages are now built with MDX (Markdown + JSX) instead of a confusing mix of markdown, handlebars, and raw html. Tweet copy is now in the page copy, making it much easier to translate, and PDFs for each language are automatically generated.

WC isn't built for SPAs, imo. It's made for progressive enhancement of html from the server, not total dom replacement.
Mind you, I don't think React is best for SPAs, either, it just has a really good ecosystem for that exact thing. Thats what I mean about alignment with startups.
React works well for companies. It smooths the edges, normalizes the platform and reduces cognitive load. The more devs working on a site, the more you want that.

And just like those that came before, the author is completely right (despite harming their own point by linking to their own micro-frameworks) but unfortunately, everything they've written will be dismissed by most devs because working without frameworks is incompatible with startup culture.

This is a very interesting perspective on the tech collapse. Yes, high interest rates and the loss of tax writeoffs for R&D have contributed a lot, but the biggest abandon may just be because there's not a large need. Thats why tech pivoted so hard into trying to find applications for LLMs and machine learning, there wasn't anything else to show growth in.

I gained 50lbs while on ozempic. Doesn't do a damn thing to my appetite or metabolism, it just helps to regulate my insulin resistance. If I try to take it to "weight loss" dosages, food in my gut ferments and I get sugar alcohol poisoning and can't leave a toilet for 12 hours at a minimum.
I hear people's stories about weight loss from GLP-1s and it's like I'm a different species.

So apparently its a common practice for rich people to sell their stocks before a dividend and buy back afterwards just to avoid the income tax incurred by the dividend.

Unlike the ring cameras, the included chime does not rely on the network to function, it receives the button push signal directly from the camera via an RF signal, so the chime is instant. It always annoyed me that my Ring chimes would take several seconds while the signal went to their servers and then back to our network. Sounded like a damn cathedral in here as each one went off out of sync.

The last device I got is their doorbell cam. Unfortunately I forgot to take photos of the installation.
It went in really easy in place of the Ring doorbell we already had. Unfortunately I did have to add a new hole in the wall, as the screw holes weren't the same as the ring mounting.
This camera also has ethernet, which is amazing for how small it is. It's powered by the 24v doorbell connection or PoE. A 24v AC adapter is included in the box if you don't already have a doorbell wired in.

The cameras support both wifi and ethernet, including PoE if you don't want to run two cables. Each camera was $44 on sale, and I got a further discount for buying two. All their cameras have a slot for microsd cards for onboard storage.
Thankfully, I don't need that because I have the home hub.

The two cameras I bought are Reolink E1 Pros, which are surprisingly cheap for the features. They have full 360° horizontal swivel and probably about 200° vertical swivel. You can pilot it in the app, but it also supports motion tracking where it will attempt to keep a moving object centered.
You can set a default position that it will roll back to after it stops tracking, and you can setup multiple positions that it rotates through.
The camera can be mounted in any orientation.

The real surprise feature was the HDMI port. When I connected it to a monitor, after all my cameras were setup, it showed a realtime view of them all. This was not a feature that I knew it supposed, so I was delighted when I plugged a monitor in and it just worked.

First, the hub. It's about the size of a cube box of kleenex, and on initial impression is very light. The majority of the weight is from the hdd that comes with the unit but must be installed yourself (I guess in case you want to do something bigger instead). The drive tray is behind a little magnetic panel on the back of the unit.
It can act either as a network device or function as a NAT for a camera only network, hense the dual ethernet. You can also connect usb drives and a microsd card.

Got my Reolink cameras and hub all setup, and I gotta say... I'm really happy with it so far. Each piece of equipment was really east to set up, I dare say even easier than Ring gear is.
I ran into zero setup issues during each step, and the app was actually a little over helpful, giving step by step instructions for even mundane tasks.

Just ordered a new doorbell cam, smart hub, and two other cameras from Reolab, intending to replace my ring cameras.
Supposedly these run entirely on my local network with no data sent to any cloud servers. People on Reddit seem pleased with them.
Will report my findings after they arrive and are up and running. Would be nice to have something not tethered to Amazon.

Last week we did a four night disney cruise from San Diego down to Ensenada. It was loads of fun, and now we want to do another one. Problem is… all the other disney ships dock in Texas, Florida, or Vancouver.

This is what happens when you let your devs use copilot.
This is supposed to be client-side browser code, but this code does not work in a browser.
It passed in the test suite, because Jest copies the entire NodeJS global namespace into `window`, but `window.Buffer` is not actually a thing.
This change also added over 150k of extra code to the bundle, just to hash an object in order to assert a value change.
