If not possible, place a dedicated firewall (OpenWrt or OPNsense) between your network and the ISP router.
I tried both OPNsense and OpenWrt.
The most cost-effective and simplest option for my use case turned out to be a Banana Pi One running OpenWrt — roughly USD 80.
It does exactly what it needs to do:
act as a clear, predictable control point between the internet and my network.
addons:
- dns over tls (f.e. Unbound) / dns over https (simpler with dns mask forwarder, quad9)
- wlan timer
client side:
- https only
- vpn on device needed

On serverside debian is my first choice too 👌
Manjaro sure, has a little bit less aggressive rolling release concept.
Run it on a pinephone years ago, but did never run it on desktop 😅
I love the arch distros because it is community driven , no hidden company behind.
Do you use hardenings or container tools for safety of the system? (Apparmor/firejail/other) i have a big respect of the community packages yay. But seems the only way to get most tools (ok…maybe flatpak is an alternative or to build the package yourself)

Next distro was Arch… Endeavour was nice, but why choose it if I can run the base system directly?
Rolling releases, a big non-profit community, and independent background structures.
Pacman and yay give access to a huge tool repo — though I have some security concerns about using yay packages…
Sadly, Debian and Fedora packages are often prioritized, so you end up relying on Flatpak, yay, or building the package yourself.
All of the distros were great and habe advantage and disadvantages — I’m still not sure which one I’ll choose. But it’s great to have a choice!

I am not sure you could/should classify it as freedom tech. But AI is a technology that can help in Knowhow and efficiency. Most of the people do not know how to self host or do not have the money to buy the mandatory gpu. Small modells are great but.. there are usecases you need the big ones.

Debian - Fedora Silverblue - EndeavourOS
On my Laptop I wanted to validate my way and installed different Linux philosophies. Tried office, documentation tools and AI Tools like ollama and goose.
Debian felt solid and secure. A hardened setup with full-disk encryption worked well.
For servers Debian is fantastic – stable, trustworthy, predictable. Use and used it in different ways for the home servers.
But on my laptop I wanted more modern packages and rolling updates. AppArmor and Firejail I only touched briefly, still need to learn them properly.
Silverblue impressed me with its immutable concept. Very clean separation of base system and apps. Security feels strong with a professional/commercial team behind it. Fedora is still community-driven at its core, but the long-term influence of IBM/Red Hat inevitably shapes priorities and creates a certain corporate gravity?
For a stable workstation it is excellent. But I noticed limitations when tools need deep hardware access, like AI models.
Now I am testing EndeavourOS. Pacman and Flatpak work great, I avoid AUR for safety. Installed with full-disk encryption and Gnome. Hardening is not complete yet, I am considering to dive deeper into AppArmor or Firejail. As an alternative, Toolbox could be a good way for safe experimentation – something I liked from Silverblue and that can also fit well into my Endeavour workflow.
It feels alive and authentic, because it is completely community driven. Rolling release gives me flexibility and the newest tools. For me as a tech enthusiast this fits best on my laptop.
What are your experiences and your thoughts? What hardenings do you recommend?

I like the idea of using a local 8B LLM on my laptop.
What’s the best way to add a web search layer on top of a model running f.e. in Ollama? Are there any standard good solutions?
I tried using RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) myself, but it didn’t work as expected. Even using a separate embedded context LLM beforehand didn’t have the desired effect.

Yes, but needs a lot of finetuning and the gui is missing for not technical users. I already optimized the prompt that i get better results and i think i get better results with llama3 8b than mistral.
My learning are, that it is realy simple to run a local llm and use f.e the nostr API.
Next example follows… but i know it is basics, for most here not something new 😅

Tried pinephone 3 years ago… manjaro os and postmarket os were running and basic function like mobile calls, sms, internet were acceptable.
But for daily usage the hardware was too slow. The display did not have a good touch display. And the OS and Tools were not designed for small mobile screen.

With mobile it is difficult. Seems the nextcloud app is THE solution.
There are possibilties, but more complex. You could sync with syncthing. But i never tried this Solution
Sync files from Android to your Nextcloud server using Syncthing.
Files go into the Nextcloud folder, and a quick scan command makes them show up in Nextcloud.
On your Android device:
- Syncthing app (from F-Droid or Play Store)
On your server:
- Syncthing installed and running
- SSH access
- You know the Nextcloud data folder (e.g. /var/www/nextcloud/data/user/files/Syncthing/)

if they shut down the internet / the power, we have other problems than bitcoin. Deliverychains, hospitals, communication do not work... pure chaos.
if there is a partiell internet or power shut down.. no problem for bitcoin. bitcoin is dezentraliced.
If there is a global shutdown. as soon as we get the power / internet back and one bitcoin node is running... we are back

📣 Nostr needs real Linux clients – with broader community support
Nostr is a free and open protocol, built on decentralization and censorship resistance.
But where are the serious, native Linux clients?
Sure, there are clients — and they deserve huge credit.
But many are maintained by just one main person. That’s fragile.
Others are browser-based or optimized for mobile. Great, but not enough.
Linux is the natural home for local-first, auditable, and privacy-respecting communication.
Yet most Nostr clients on Linux still depend on web stacks — making them almost as exposed as traditional platforms.
👉 What we need:
- Native GUI clients for Linux with current nip support
- Zero telemetry by default
- Optionale: local AI-based filtering (instead of relay moderation)
Until then, a decentralized protocol without truly local autonomy remains vulnerable — not by design, but by missing tools.
What do you think?
Or maybe I’m missing something — is there already a solid native Linux client I just don’t know about?

As a follow-up to my previous post:
Filtering and content-weighting algorithms are essential — but they must never be done centrally.
This applies to #Nostr clients, nostr nodes and the protocoll itself as well.
If I want to onboard my family to #Nostr, I need the ability to filter disturbing content from images, videos, and text.
If I want to improve my own user experience, I need to be able to sort my feed according to my own values.
Neither a node nor a client-side database should make these decisions for me.
I envision a future where a locally running AI takes care of this — under my full control.

Surface Laptop 3 + Debian: Internal keyboard not working (I²C keyboard not loaded in initramfs).
Fix:
1. Edit: sudo nano /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
2. Add drivers (see below)
3. Run: sudo update-initramfs -u
4. Reboot

Ok i understand. If a user sync the keychain into icloud or backup the phone (and keychain backup is on), his nostr key is saved too.
