I bought two caper bushes today. My kalamata olive tree is in the fourth year of production and I've learned to cure the olives. There's a parmesan-like cheese (aged Estero Gold) down the road in Valley Ford. Need to learn to grow my own anchovies and I'll be all set for a killer tapenade.

I know Tim's document from 37 years ago says "proposal" in the title, but I always felt it wasn't a "may I do this please" proposal but more of an announcement. "Here's what I'm doing, here's all the details, you can do it too if you want."
That's why it worked. No vaporware, rough consensus, working code, open source. The Internet way.

Let me add that it is not easy to pose such a question. It cost a half million dollars in legal help and the answer was no, just for this one question.
In addition to a huge amount of work from the Vanderbilt legal clinic, we had hundreds of thousands of pro bono work from Adams and Reese, our law firm.

Having successfully brought home from India 48.3 kg of DVDs that my friend Lawrence gave me (he has a ph.d in film studies from JNU so his collection is absolutely amazing) I am proceeding to jellyfinify my luggage to place these videos on the mac mini in my basement. Really sweating out the flight status (as are so many others). I was supposed to be on tonight's flights but bumped myself to Sunday. I know people who have rerouted to, e.g., BLR to Mumbai to Ethiopia to NY for $2000 (economy) but those tickets are $5,000 now. Preparing to stay in Bangalore for a few weeks if necessary. Good food, calm here, just no way to get home.

I am doing this in my data center, which is located on the wall above the steps down into my basement.
This is a state of the art enterprise-grade facility. Now spinning 32 terabytes, 1,658 movies are on a jellyfin server but there is a lot more. Not just an entertainment center, we’re a full service MIS shop for my house.

My friend Athula just delivered 3 jars of chutney (beet/coconut, eggplant, and ridge gourd) and most amazing roasted cashews. The cashews are harvested by tribals in the Eastern Ghats (mountains), roasted over a wood fire, then peeled. The pepper is a single origin pepper from Melnad in the Western Ghats, and the salt is from the Himalayas. Eat your heart out, I'm not sharing.

For this batch, it will be pomegranate, pomegranate molasses, pickled beet, Andhra style red chili paste (with jaggery and tamarind), and Andhra gunpowder (coconut, roasted lentil flour, curry leaves, coriander, cumin). Instead of the lentil powder, could do ground sesame seeds, which is what the original recipe I stole used.

I used nigella seeds last time, which was a mistake. They didn’t grind fully even after roasting, the chutney had a gritty texture. Sort of like sand. Tasted wonderful, but the grit was a technical error.

Unripe fruits are perfectly round. When they are ripe, the arils swell, flattening the sides. When unripe, the skin is hard, when ripe you can scratch the surface. When it gets ripe the calyx (the things that look like petals on top) get dry.

I experienced a Sudden Unexpected Basil Harvest (SUBH) and was forced to reopen the pesto factory on an emergency posture. After 2.5 days of prep work I now have 8 quarts of destemmed basil, 2 pounds of pounded hazelnuts, 1.5 pounds of grated Estero Gold Reserve (a local Parmesan-like substance), 4 cups of parsley, 7 heads of garlic roasted and the cloves extracted, and two liters of olive oil. Ready to open the factory. Cover me, going in.

Ripped 302 DVDs into 1,426 video files and booted up a jellyfin server. Because I am an experienced computer professional with decades of experience I did not read the documentation, so all of the files are named improperly.

At the Supreme Court picking up my visitor pass. Because I’m a foreigner they sent me to the differently abled window. I brought Andhra style red chili pickles for the justices. Security seemed ok with that, was a bit worried they would object.

Internet stopped working, I went down to the front desk to make sure they were on it. Duty manager said he'd call me when it was working. I tried to explain "ping -a" to him, said I'd know before he did when it was working. He kept insisting he'd call me. Concierge knows what I do, was cracking up.

On my last trip, I brought a bunch of chutneys and pickles for the cooks in the hotel. On this visit, they sent a boatload of snacks and sweets up to my room like spicy dried banana chips and murukku (chickpea flour snacks). My friend Athula sent a tub of spiced rice, some mango/coconut pachadi, some okra pachadi, and a fantastic spicy puffed rice namkeen. Eat your heart out.
