some people liken Malört to, for example, "a tire fire," and I don't think that's really accurate. But it's so intensely bitter as to (IMO) nearly overwhelm the initial herbal complexity, and then the bitter aftertaste lingers a long time.

I do like Fernet, so take that as a calibration data point; but I absolutely recommend the cocktail called The Hard Sell, which is 1oz gin, 1oz St. Germain, ¾oz Malört, ¾oz lemon juice. You might think, "holy shit, that's a crazy amount of St. Germain!" but the thing is, that's also a crazy amount of Malört. Somehow it ends up balanced!
