If someone demonstrates skill or craftsmanship (ie, drawing), some good compliments are: praising the quality of the work ("I love the linework here"), praising the person for the skills they've developed ("wow that's so cool!").
Some bad compliments are: putting yourself down ("I could never do this"), othering the person ("people who can draw must have a different special kind of brain"), attributing their skill to something innate/unearned ("you're so talented, I'm jealous")

Dan Olson at #xoxofest really struck a chord with me talking about his anxiety spiral as an artist dealing with envy: “I could do that. Why am I not doing that? What could possibly go wrong?”
So many projects I’ve never finished because of this consistent blend of envy and arrogance and discontentment. Trying to make projects Good like the Good Things I admire instead of just making the thing for the sake of the thing!
