supervision is supervision. Why do you have to be physically with someone to supervise. Plenty of tools allow you to work together on the same computer remotely. We use Tuple for example. Everyone on a call with control of the same desktop. You can guide and mentor and help as they get their feet. Of course not all roles are suitable but for many its fine. Its just you need to look beyond traditional management techniques.

Very much so lazy London media (or Salford media). My ancestry is Welsh. My family live in Wales. I have lived in Wales at various points. It’s so obvious to everyone who is a little bit nationalistic Welsh when it’s wrong.
I still remember when Cymru played Awstralia at Castell-Nedd (Neath) in Rygbi. It was televised on the national BBC and the commentators joked about the “typo” in Awstralia’s name!
There’s a level of devolution. Nothing like Scotland. But the railways and the NHS are two. How are the govt getting away with branding ENGLAND’s railways as GB Railways?
Also I am seeing a rise in people using England for Britain. Its combined with the rise of right wing nationalism. A return of English colonialism in the home nations. The act that introduced state schooling required English as the language and would punish children for speaking Welsh (the Welsh not). Churchill sent the army in to quell miner unrest in the early 1900s. People have died due to London sanctioned oppression.
Farage talking about Welsh as a foreign language is ironic considering the name the English for Wales is from old English and means foreign speakers. The word for the English in Cymru is Saesneg (same root@as Sassennach) and means Saxons!
I doubt Wales would ever get independence (much as I would like it) as there has been to much influx of the English. The valleys have many with English ancestry (came in to mine at the turn of the 19th/20th Century) and then little England beyond Wales aka Pembrokeshire where all the English buy their second or retirement homes. As a result it will always have a vote that’s harder to win.
So yes English colonialism is a thing and still present in the media!

as a teenager in Brum I was in some youth club and helped build and maintain the ents equipment. (Also used to play Hells Bells went the religious people came - it was associated with a church). Seemed to be a way of getting to know people at Uni. Rock Soc and college. Surprised when I was elected. I was also voted person most likely to be a mass murderer so I’m not sure how I feel about the voting members of my college.

I would basically encourage businesses to move out of the south east and make the country more homogenous. Its ridiculous to keep piling more and more people in to the home counties and London. I would also move parliament to a more central location. Cities like Leeds and Manchester could easily double in size But adding another 2 million to the south east isn’t so easy.

Not really. We run a block system. Each block is protected by signals. Red means don’t enter. Yellow means there’s a train in the next but one block so be ready. This means your train density on the rails is limited by the number of blocks. You could make the blocks smaller but then you risk having them too small. You also have to manage trains waiting at stations. Which means other trains catch them up and could be held up due to lack of empty blocks. When they added two new stations on the Airedale line not all the trains could stop there because you end up not being able to fit all the trains in the time table. What you could do is make trains longer so you have the same frequency but more passengers per train but then they wouldn’t fit in stations so you would have to extend stations. Basically we have a victorian network which now has more passengers than it has ever had and it is at capacity in some key areas (Manchester Oxford Road sees a train every five minutes or even more frequent. If it goes wrong everything is screwed).

It would also reduce prices because more trains mean more seats mean less premium pricing. It also improves reliability because you can go around failed trains. Slow trains don’t hold up fast ones. And so on. Every main line used to have slow and fast lines and BR pulled up the slow lines. What’s the point of being on a Azuma if the aged class 158 in front is slowing you down?

Reading this entire thread its amazing how clueless people are of the current set up and actually how difficult it is to run trains and keep them safe. A lot of problems are due to our complete lack of capacity for TRAINs on the system (not passengers). What we need is big investment in the network, new lines, HS2 fully to increase mainline capacity in the north. None of that is the fault of the operators!

You can’t win. Either they work together or you have one franchise and the one advantage of privatisation is lost and that’s competition. Or you just have all from company which is a monopoly. The SE gets three times as much funding on transport per capita than the north. It always makes me laugh when people complain they have to wait half an hour for a train.

I am very dubious it will make things better. Just shit in different ways. BR never got the funding it was promised on nationalosation. BR was under funded all through and you have to remember although Beeching report was started under the Tories it was enacted by Labour. To be frank I am flabberghasted that people look back at the seventies and eighties and think it was better. It wasn’t. The rolling stock was shit. The trains infrequent and rather than fix buildings they bulldozed them. I gave up as a student trying to use them as they were so unreliable and bought an old banger.

I used to use the railways back in BR days. I’m not convinced this is makes things any better. Shonky old trains. Infrequent services. Gaps in the time table. And that was BR. Trains by us are FAR more frequent than they were pre privatisation and a lot more people use them. We even get London expresses four times a day. And they rebuilt the waiting rooms and booking office demolished under BR. Unless they actually spend money they WILL just go backwards. The problem in our areas is a full to capacity ECML and the upgrade of the TP route without upgrading the other one before doing it so trains could be diverted.

The problem is that the US doesn’t have capitalism. It has monopolies, cartels, government supported restrictions to trade. In capitalism you have lots of competition. The US is designed to avoid competition. Competition with one another. Competition with companies elsewhere in the world. You end up with Oligarchs. Its not a free market economy. Every time mickey mouse ages out Disney gets the copyright laws extended. Edison was great at getting patents, others did the inventing. None of this is capitalism as you would see in an economics book.

Or it might be that not everyone wants or needs a degree and what’s happening is there are just more people with degrees which don’t matter when they go to get a job. When I went to uni my uni had 4000 under grads. It was STEM, English and History oriented. It now has around 12000. Are all those additional degrees in numerous subjects as useful as the original 4000.

My partner and I were talking about the IT projects for the NHS and how costly and disastrous they are. We were saying that many enterprises of that size have their own software department and develop in house and surely it would be better to employ some decent people and contract bodies rather than out source the entire projects. Keep the knowledge in house!

Yes but another project in the south. So much more spending per person on in infrastructure in the south than the north. Meanwhile we lost the upgrade to the rochdale route, HS2 to Leeds, Trams and Trolley buses. Leeds is the largest city in Europe without a rapid transit system. May be we should start by upgrading away from London.

People often compare our trains with Europe. But it is interesting to note that German rail is owned but not run by the government. Upon unification many lines in the east were closed. In 2022 punctuality was 91% and in 2023 just 64% (an all time low). Swiss punctuality was 92.5%. UK figures are 68.3% on time, 85.1% within 3 minutes and 98% within 15. The UK has a track capacity issue. If you solved that we would be more punctual. The basic problem is late running slow trains hold up faster in time ones.

Then privatisation again. Yes there is investment in infrastructure now and a lot of old buildings, ruined in the BR days got restored. Stations started getting their buildings back. New lines being built. But also a franchise system which is badly thought out. Which seems to prefer how much money they can make the government over service quality and so on. Basically the government can’t run businesses for toffee or even negotiate with business. And capitalism skins off the top. So have rail companies but make them non profits. Have the people who know how to run railways run them at arm length and have the gov properly fund them!

The railways were nationalised after the war because it was shown during the war that coordinated running made sense. So they nationalised with regions that just copied the big four. You ended up with regional colour schemes, Swindon building beautiful but dead end diesel hydraulics that were scrapped after a short life. There was a promise of funding that never happened so rather than repairing buildings they were torn down. Complete lack of investment. The last steam loco was built in 1960 (again beautiful) and became obsolete in 68. Lines continued to be closed in the 79s and 80s. Dubious practices of diverting traffic off of lines to close then (worked with the woodhead route but mass protest prevented the settle and carlisle closing). Cancellation of APt just as they got it to work. Very little new building. The entire time the statement that railways should pay was made. Short sited and penny pinching was BRs way!

I’ve seen more than one “this is what’s wrong with C and this language is the solution” arguments over the years. All software is a compromise. Rewriting something in a new language will introduce bugs what ever that language is. Then there’s tools support on as many hardware platforms as possible and ensuring we don’t limit compatibility. And for what its worth I program in many languages which includes C, languages to replace C and languages to replace the languages to replace C.

That chart is some what misleading. Denmark definitely has a smaller gap between the top earners and the bottom ones but comes out worse! Its because its relative values and not absolute. It has top 1%, 1~10%, and the rest. Its the old average vs media vs mode thing again.
Lets assume there are two countries of 100 people. One is 2 billionaires and everyone else at 10,000 each. Then the other is 50 with 40 million and the rest with 20,000 each. The second is “fairer” but the has a higher number of top 1%

There was a meta data paper where someone studied all the papers on archeological digs as a whole and worked out that something was wrong because something like 80% of all bodies were “male” which obviously isn’t right. So they went back and reexamined findings and basically because gender from physical remains was somewhat guesswork they based gender also on grave goods which, of course, was a circular argument. Now they are better at it (not perfect) so we now have female roman gladiators found in London, Shield Maidens found in the north of England, and a Galli follower of Cybele (trans woman) also in Northern England.

I started programming at 13 (lucky to have parents who could afford and were willing to invest in future. I was building hardware and software by 16. And I knew a couple of languages and assemblers by 18. I did not do computing at school and did a physics and astronomy degree. But I think schools need to teach programming from 11 and have kids doing computing and electronics through school. Get them all playing with arduinos and raspberry Pis. I try to help and have run girls in STEM arduino days. If you just get a couple who are interested then that would solve the shortage. But right now our education system isn’t good enough. You need to have a good foundation and teach people how to teach themselves. I am still learning new technologies 45 years after first starting to program.

There are systemic issues. The tech consultancy I work for has an office in Poland for two reasons. One is Brexit. The other is that we couldn’t find enough people in the UK of the right calibre and, surprise, people don’t want to move to a bigoted island to work anymore. We do take students for their gap years but we interview a lot and may be get one or two. UK education just isn’t good enough. School IT is always using apps and some very noddy programming. Students often start CS degrees without any prior experience. Many CS degrees cover the basics and theory but nothing or very little about how software is actually developed, open source, CICD, collaboration and so on. We interview people and reject so many. We are not a large company so teaching someone essentially from scratch isn’t possible. So we need to employ from outside of the UK.
