Agreed. Unfortunately “decentralized payment” is a mined territory filled with crypto bros. I prefer state control to evil corporations or individuals.
Brazil for example has a state-defined system called Pix which means you can easily send money to a registered phone number or email (or a random key).
Works online or with that guy selling food on the beach (it is simply backed by a bank account). No fees for individuals.

Oh well it seems that to keep it cheap I’d have to accept some blurry 2x scaling. The price of these scalers are mostly above the projected Sentinel65x price itself 😅 (keeping in mind 🇧🇷import taxes will increase all of these greatly).

I am thinking a 19” 1280x1024 like a Dell Ultrasharp might be pretty close to it (640x480 @2x 1280x960 + small border at the bottom). I had a Sony with similar specs but not sure I can fix it.
Shouldn’t be that far off from feeling of a 1084s (in terms of size, not CRT luxury). Maybe a decent scaler with subtle scanlines can make it acceptable (and small).

Got it. Different resolutions on different ports will likely divide a small user base so sticking to fixed 640x480 for everyone makes more sense.
CRT will always feel better but lacking space I can always get a HD screen and hide the borders under some physical frame. Worst part is the built-in scaling on LCDs :-/

[@mos_8502](https://studio8502.ca/@mos_8502 ) about barrier to entry for #Sentinel65X: is 640x480 the final resolution for it ?
I get it’s perfect for old CRTs but for those who don’t have the space (or muscle 😅) for these I find 640x480 very frustrating to display on a cheap LCD screen. Either they are minuscule (5 inches) or most available 4:3 displays seem to be 1024x768.
In this regard 512x384 seems ideal to me to allow for perfect 2x scaling on cheap LCDs. I believe multisync CRTs could support this too?

A ROM-based boot menu would make a lot of sense with options like:
1. BASIC (press enter)
2. Files (load & run from SD-card)
3. Boot over Serial etc
Also define a default file name that if presents autoboots SD-card like Amiga diskettes.
Thats a far-fetched projection at this point but I understand the hardware would be able even to run a GUI OS on the scale of Apple GS/OS or GEOS with a SNES mouse ? In 2035😅

[@mos_8502](https://studio8502.ca/@mos_8502 ) I know it’s a tad out of scope but have you considered bundling a wifi modem with the sentinel65x ? Basically a ESP32 super mini C3 you can get for 3$ on Ali these days .
The idea is that it could be very helpful in building a community — if this was on every board. Thinking of a serial-to-Internet thing so it would also be a terminal where Sentinel owners could exchange messages & data, in the spirit of #GlobalTalk but in text & byte arrays.

Of course the root cause is that I mostly just can’t do capitalism anymore… after somehow winning at it for a while.
SwiftUI like many other technologies are just an expression of it. I mean I like that it is accessible to write UIs fast once you get used to it. I just can’t get used to the fact that I had ObjC/UIKIT apps that were smooth on an iPhone 3GS or an an early Intel Mac and now the default is just being laggy. It’s everywhere.

One of the reasons I just can’t motivate myself to work with SwiftUI (which is kind of slowly causing my ruin) is I can’t accept that so many apps with rather simple layouts are just plain laggy on my M1 Mac Studio Ultra.
This shit has 20 cores, 64 GB of Ram, disks that read more than the content of my boot drive from a few years ago per second. It is absurdly fast as most things but this is progress.. sigh.

Your about box is a .gmi file, your apps for native notes also , your “email” and IM, newsgroups etc. All standardized in a way that excludes the modern web but centered on communication from person to person just exchanging structured text files (and linked images I guess).

I reached a point where starting over would be probably be a week of work full time. Two weeks if I have to deal with other people in this house in panic with stuff not working anymore 😂
Still have a few issues but transition wasn't as bad as I feared. Managed to do it all while wife was asleep. Thankfully HAOS has add-ons for most of the stuff I used. Hard part is remembering each detail I had hacked manually.

Sure it doesn’t have the reliability of an actual data center — being vulnerable to 🐱 cat-in-the-middle — attacks but it’s what combined specs you can get for self hosted #proxmox servers these days.
It’s two mini Chinese GenMachine mini PCs, each about 300$ (bought one used now, other two years ago) with older (non-SSD) USB drives for backups.

Wow, #DeepSeek is *very useable* here. I asked it to build a simple DNS server in Go reading from a sqlite DB (because I did exactly that some time ago).
43 seconds to get the Go version (first prompt, a bit long)
5 seconds to get a python version of the same
18 seconds to make a C++ version
That's on a 2022 M1 Mac Studio Ultra with 64GB unified memory. As you can see in iStats Menu GPU is of course at 94% and the 20 cores mostly idle so machine stays responsive.

Nothing frustrates me as much as when fiber goes out and it falls back to 4G but signal suddenly becomes weak enough to become useless (even though it’s a dedicated receiver up on the roof).

Where is this hosting ?
If you want to start small at 5$ monthly I think these AMD cloud instances at OVH offer much more value (2 cores, 2GB ram, 40 GB SSD unmetered bandwidth unless hosted in Asia and Australia).
I am not saying they are the best but I have been using them for a very long time and aside from once famous fire in a data center I don’t complain in relation to price vs quality. You of course get the service you pay for at 5€.

I think Lagrange is nearly perfect as a Gemini Browser but I wish it focused more on streamlining the subscription to page/feed process. More like a feed reader, also inciting to open your own with blank folder for “my own capsules”.
You start with a tree of subscriptions in folders and have a one click subscribe button on the page which would ask for a category. Right now it is still a bit confusing as a newcomer.

Também achava que todo vinho era vegano por definição, igual ketchup.
Porém a minha experiência com vinho vegano (europeu) não foi boa. E não acho que tenha a ver com ser vegano ou não. Deve ter muito vinho bom que é de fato vegano e nem menciona.

BTW observing your project got me thinking about how we got to vector fonts. At lot of it had to do with printing back then which was when resolution difference was big enough to make it a necessity.
Old macs which had vector fonts but not yet high resolution screens and some apps kind of looked worse because if you picked the wrong font size it still was more or less OK but not as perfect as handmade bitmap fonts in few sizes which forced you to adapt the UI to fit.

Or you could make it USB only. It’s still a bit tricky on a pi3. I don’t really remember what’s the issue with some drives and pi3 boards. But all Pi-4 series will boot off USB and that has enough power to get a pair of leds blinking.
I am not sure why but I like the idea of some fancy (mildly useful) additional hardware to transform a Pi into something else.

I wonder if there’d be energy to drive a pair of weak leds ? It seems the SD card port has totals of 100 ma available only though. So that +eMMC might be pushing it.
Just thought that to make such an hypothetical “boot rom” more special it could have a few color weak LEDs that apps or the system could use. Like the floppy drive led on Amiga. Not something required but a touch of additional fun.

I wonder if stuff like this is SD-card+eMMC is reliable ? I mean more than a plain SD-card at least which can be destroyed so easily.
A thing like this could be put in a nice :capivara: 3D-printed box to fit the Pi400 color(s) and sold as “official firmware”. Would be great merch and be useful.
Nothing a user can’t build him/herself but a great thing to both have and show support and also makes like much easier for learners.

It’s sad that Pi can’t seemingly boot alone on serial (I think?) like some BananaPi can.
Would be cool to be able to buy/sell just a Capi boot “ROM” with a customized cheap ESP32 board and plug at the back of pi400 to connect to serial. So you could boot the base of Capi on (flashable but) permanent memory.

Also a lot of hobby OS were killed by the browser taking over everything and this impossible hyper complex element becoming the “minimum” requirement for any OS.
After we saw how wrong this went, I hope Capi and other hobby systems will trace another parallel timeline for the internet — making gemtext a first class citizen for example.

Short of working a custom set of shortcuts and scripts is there a ready made app that would ideally run on Linux on a Pi that can just play a set videos at the touch of one key ?
Like one key to show a list and a key to play each predefined video in the list ?

Finally got my DVI cable and toyed a bit more with the 1.5Ghz mini. Works beautifully on Mac OS 9 (patched). Only annoying thing is builtin audio output sounds horrible. Looks physically damaged.
Anyway spotted an M-Audio FireWire interface in the wild so of course I clicked :sadness:
It’s “nice” (for me) that Apple dropped support for FireWire adapter in recent system updates because people start dumping them out at lower prices.

Got my articulated arm to elevate the 15.6” HD USB-C screen. People using it with the builtin holding led are going to break their back. Well, same as any tablet.
For now it is connected to a Pi4 running #RetroPie and also makes a nice console for my tired eyes with Termius 16x32 font. The good side of using retro stuff on it is I won’t get frustrated by the 6 bit color depth. Definitely not a screen for a picky artist but fine for games and terminals.

Indeed if you manage to get it to work smoothly also on a Zero 2w it’ll make a difference in all parts of the world where 30$ isn’t in the same “fun budget” range as 100$. Not to mention it opens a lot of possibilities for customized builds.
This being said standardizing on the Pi400 as the baseline is smart. Like for Commodore machines unique standardized hardware with the proposed software helps keep a platform coherent & manageable.

I sincerely appreciate how your projects take affordability into account as it really changes the demographics of the people who are allowed to participate in the creative retro world.
Aiming for universally available hardware really makes it easier for everyone on earth.
Hell in Brazil even a Pi400 is relatively expensive (taking into account import taxes and relation to cost of living).

As I understand it you’d have insane amounts of unused memory on a Pi so this could be used to duplicate a lot of things. Like each app having its own copies of separate full screen graphics buffer that you’d just switch over when they became active. That would reduce a lot of need for locking, limiting it only to the few things that really need to be synced and unique.

Considering this will always run on a multi core machine like a Pi maybe it would make sense to have several lua VMs running? Like one for the active app, one for the previous app when you just switched, one for widgets or menu bars.
Idea is that you could wait more gracefully for loops in apps that are not on screen to stop even if their drawing calls are ignored.

This reminds me I don’t boot my Cube on Mac OS 9 enough (it just is better on OSX to use it as an audio Mixer).
That moment in time where pixel art met isometric icons on resolutions between 640x480 and 800x600 was a sweet spot in the history of cool looking icons.

From time to time I stumble upon 25 year old pixel perfect 32x32 icons from BeOS and I still think they are the best thing (even more than the same in higher resolution in #Haiku).

I have often been disappointed at perf of GUI stuff on the Pi. Especially at high resolutions. But I suspect it has a lot to do with most software being ported “down” from much more powerful PCs.
RiscOS feels always snappy though, even on my Pi3. Not sure how much depends on acceleration and how you get that in circle pi.

Indeed 640x360 x2 with a gap at the bottom feels great on this 8” screen. Very readable.
Not sure I’d actually use it on this thing because the cramped keyboard is really painful (as evidenced by all the bumps and adhesives to make it bearable).
Probably the soft spot is around 10” or 11” which can get you a useable keyboard size. Wish I had kept my 2011” MacBook Air (1366x 768).

I am really curious to see where this can go in the mid-long term. Particularly once network functionality is added.
It could become a nice alternative timeline in which actual content matters.
BTW do you have any clean PNG screenshots out there ? I was curious to see the proportions and appearance on actual hardware here (notably a 1280x800 T60 ThinkPad and a small 8” Linux laptop on same resolution ).
