What are your thoughts on decent yet still unaffordable miniPCs that call themselves "datacentres at home"?
And I mean:
* The Nvidia DSX Spark
* All of the derivatives (Thinkpad, MSI, Acer, all have one) that are pretty much the same but cheaper, with Nvidia DG10 inside.
* All the miniPCs with AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (e.g.: GMKTek Evo X2) with 128GB unified RAM.
I don't mean a comparison between them two. I mean, are they viable for, let's say: plugging Clide or Roo Code (or Zed Editor or whatever coding tool you use) to them and run 70B coding models in llama.cpp decently or would they fall short?
Also, how do you expect the future of home inference to cost? Still ~3000€ or more?
I currently use ThunderCompute, llama.cpp and whatever model gets the job done with an Nvidia H100 and pay per hour, plug it all to Roo Code and together with locally run Qdrant works flawlesly.
(context: I'm in Spain, every machine costs twice here for some very odd reason)

Post filtering still not working good enough for my taste, and account discovery is still subpair.

The more relevance they get the more they'll end up feeding up their own slop to themselves.
Eg: code. If all junior coders use AI slop and all junior coders do show their code openly to get a job, and all LLMs feed themselves of what's open on GitHub, their quality at coding can only get worse over time.

The only reason you don't see them is most BIG servers adhere to the Mastodon server code of conduct and share blocklist, in those lists was Truth Social or whatever the Trumpers call it now.

Generally for quick consults is chatGPT.
Perplexity just reels like a layer on top of it, I don't need a middle man. Facebook ones are laughably bad and slop producing.
The one Google has on every search is ridiculously inaccurate when not hallucinating every answer.
So yep, ChatGPT for general questions and always asking it to produce sources because it just sounds more convincing at being inaccurate.
I use it more ever since it produces links when asked.

What's new in this network? I might spend more time here. I'm kind of disappointed in the fediverse. I'm realising that while it "might" look left-leaning platform it is anything but that. It's all window dressing.
Same people who defend working right might offer you a job where you work 2+ years without a contract. Same people who post about hating ICE have no real-life black and minority ethnic friends, in fact Mastodon is incredibly white.
No one seems to see an issue on the power admins have in Mastodon to silence people either.
In a nutshell, Nostr feels RIGHT I just don't understand why Nostr doesn't scale, why crypto is so ridiculously overrepresented if you just want a social network to meet people and see cute cat pics, have fun.

I'm still trying to figure out the multiple direct-messaging NIPs of Nostr.
There are so many. I thought number 4 was it all but nope. That one leaks metadata, so now there is 44 which fixes some https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/44.md then number 59 for giftwarpping which I'm finding hard to put my head around ,then you're supposed to ignore then and use 17 and you start thinking, wait...why are we going back in numbers?
Isn't this a bit confusing?
I wonder if there's one NIP for a search protocol (I know there's a search NIP number 50) that works across some relays like a directory.

I wonder what happens with most web-based clients of Nostr when you open them considering there's zero actual need for a backend for them to run as there's no hidden user/pass-based DB involved that needs protecting since everything is in the open, if they all run Nostr directly from the front-end are therefore all of them single-page applications?

Many load and feel as if they were SPAs (saying this as an Angular 2.0+ first and React second developer). They have that clunkiness, specific of a browser loading a massive bunch of node modules, and storing far too much data to show a page.
There's a reason we evolved into Angular Universal, Next.JS and many other formulas that pushed all the processing back into a server. Which is that SPA assume always
1. The browser is on a PC that has enough humph to run it all.
2. The browser doesn't have 30 other tabs open, reducing too the processing power of the user's PC let alone reducing RAM availability.
Elixir Phoenix would be ideal to build a Nostr client. I'll definitely give that one a thought once I finish comprehending the full list of NIPs.

It feels like an SPA due to LiveViews being a non-complicated implementation of sockets (yes even simpler than JavaScript frameworks) while it keeps all the processing powers in the server. Let alone you could use Oban to create user desired indexes based on multiple keywords.
I seriously need to get started with Flutter too, since I want to build a dating app, using the Nostr protocol. One where the goal is for you to delete your profile, not to keep you eyaballing and scrolling eternally to shove as many ads to you as possible.

I don't know if you guys have heard about DeltaChat, it's an instant-messaing tool with the idea of becoming a substitute for Whatsapp with incredibly similar in basic deployment system than Nostr.
I have my own relay https://chat.maikel.dev/ and run my own fork docs there: https://chat.maikel.dev/docs/ feel free to use the code to run yours as you please.
Fair warning, launch from a Debian based distro or Nixos and use as server a cloud machine with EXACTLY Debian 12. Anything other than Debian 12 and you'll suffer. Mine is like 3€ in Hetzner.
I'm currently comparing (hence why I'm now in Nostr too) this platform vs DeltaChat for intant messaging since i'm sick of Whatsapp. I like a lot more the Nostr model, but DeltaChat messaing app feels VERY familiar as it looks and works pretty much like old Whatsapp.
0xChat is decent, but lacks features such as live location or th incredibly useful WebXDC of Delta or the fact it works perfectly in Android, iOS and Linux with the same account.

For anyone interested in running FreeBSD inside Linux I made this: https://maikel.dev/running-freebsd-from-nixos-using-libvirtd-from-scratch-v2-0-2/.
I'm long overdue an update on how to do the very same thing in a kind of combo way:
1. Install FreeBSD on a very fast external SSD drive with QEMU/Libvirtd from BSD
2. Be able to boot the PC directly from that USB so you have two options to run the same system: virtualised inside any OS that has QEMU or booting from USB.
I've done it done already and have two external drives one with Arch (which suprisingly took me very little to remember how to install) and another one with FreeBSD. I'm getting this book delivered on Sunday, the degree with the Open University would have cost me ~30k GBP approx.

They charge you for breathing here. This network is NOT your friend. You won't make enough BTCs per month to live from it, ever. Please don't stay for the crypto, stay because you like the beaty of the protocol, the NIPs being implemented, the portable identities, the censor-resitant publishing, the chaos. But keep your feet on Earth when it comes to making money. This will just put you in the red.

I use Amethyst on Android and Primal on PC, nop so far. I had to go Tenor find a GIF and upload it. Mastodon, I can just find a GIF directly from my keyboard on pretty much any of the client apps and hit send.
