What this reveals, more than anything, is that we have mistaken fluency for thought. A student who can produce a clean, grammatically sound paragraph—complete with varied sentence structure and the occasional well-placed em dash—now gives the impression of intelligence without having engaged in the difficult, often uncomfortable labor of actually forming an idea. But writing, in its truest sense, has never been about polish; it has been about resistance. It is the act of pushing against one’s own vagueness, of confronting half-formed intuitions and forcing them into clarity.
Read the first two sentences. What can you deduce from ChatGPT’s argument? We learn that a) students have mistaken “fluency” for “thought” and that b) students can now write clean sentences without having gone through the “labor of actually forming an idea.” There is truth to both claims, but the first claim is too broad to communicate anything substantial. The second claim simply repeats an idea I’ve already established without deepening it in any meaningful way. ChatGPT is a pro at regurgitating surface-level ideas without actually saying anything of substance.
Its next two claims, however, are the most egregious offenders. ChatGPT goes on to tell us that writing is not about “polish” but “resistance.” Garbage political bias aside, it is bad enough that this statement by itself means absolutely nothing—what follows is somehow even worse: an explanation that wastes an entire sentence on buzzwords and does little to elucidate the meaning of this so-called “writing as resistance.”

If you don’t have insurance, what happens is: you just don’t pay, and you have a giant medical debt as a black mark on your credit score forever.

Book review: Original Sin by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson chronicles the trainwreck that was Biden's 2024 presidential campaign, and early signs of Biden's mental decline.
The book starts slow and is a disjoint collection of anecdotes slowly building up. The really exciting bits start at more than halfway into the book, in the Chapter titled "The Debate". It was strangely fun to relive the unfolding disaster in late 2024 through this book. Maybe there's a genre for this kind of biographies.
The book is helpfully armed with an index, so if I were to read it again, I'd start from page 185 "The Debate", and use the index whenever it refers to unfamiliar previous episodes.
GC people may be disappointed to learn that there's no reference in the book to the gender wars which we were all certain were the main cause of Trump's win.
Jokes aside, I learned that Biden placed the interest of his family ahead of his country, especially the final act of Biden pardoning Hunter and his other family members, making a nice precedence for Trump to pardon Jan 6 insurrectionists.

“It takes a village” is advice that sounds communitarian, but in fact, it pushes for an individualistic solution to a societal problem. And it can distract people from demanding the kinds of solutions that could truly help families: longer parental leave; more flexible remote-work policies; child-care support; a work culture that accepts the constancy of kids’ sicknesses. Instead, families are left to “ask for help” on their own: You find the village. You join the app. You move closer to your mom. You need to be friendlier, more active, more approachable, more involved.
Those who can cobble together a network—by virtue of luck or wealth or people skills—come out ahead. Everyone else, the “village” wisdom implies, isn’t asking hard enough.

No, it's what passes for Victorian land use planning for jobs in 2025.
Last Sunday on the weekend before the Cup Day public holiday the Victorian state government released a 10 year plan for industrial land.
It proposed the release of 5800 hectares that would fit up to 100 000 jobs.
I looked at it to see what it said about public transport access to jobs.
I searched various relevant terms like buses.
Nothing.
Public transport access and services is not mentioned once as a consideration for industrial land.
The plan is apparently the work of the Department of Transport and Planning.
The amalgamated department has a name that implies there is some sort of coordination.
But it doesn't look like any of this happened.

That's fine. Wikipedia is free culture and it's good to take from them and adapt. The problem, as I understand from the article, is lack of transparency. What are the grokipedia changes from the the original wikipedia entries? What are the reasons for these changes? It's not really a wiki if there are no history edits for each entry. But this is all moot. The use of LLM means there's no accountability or transparency whatsoever and grokipedia is literally unusable.
