To elaborate: at the beginning of the month, I got a new laptop, and took 4 days off writing to get it set up and customized and stuff. Then in the middle of the month, I made the decision to go to San Francisco and wrap up a few loose ends (and also update my mental maps and memories), and... 1/2

There's definitely a griddle at J&J's Bar and Grill, the bar/café/restaurant that San Francisco's urban magicians frequent. Otherwise, they couldn't make French toast just the way Bradley Chung, one of the more respected members of the community, likes it. (Not just for him, of course! The griddle also allows them to make pancakes, burgers, bacon, you name it. But I figured I'd give him a special mention.)

Yeah, since software development involves a lot of dealing with raw text, we programmers have a lot of really good tools for doing that. Naturally, I use them in my writing.

William Poundstone's _The Recursive Universe_ taught me far more about recursion, complexity and how it can arise from simplicity, information and how it differs from data, entropy, and the universe itself, than I can possibly do justice to in 500 characters — or even a multi-post thread. It's up there with things like Sagan's _Cosmos_ and Hofstadter's _Gödel, Escher Bach_ and _Metamagical Themas_.

Absolutely.
If I'm sitting in a big, comfy armchair, I can't move my body all that much, but if I should happen to need to move my arms (say, to pick up whatever I'm drinking), that motion will generally be synced with the music, a tiny bit of dance in an otherwise-static situation.

I have a fair number of references to music in my work. I'm trying to keep them from getting out of control, and also mindful of copyright issues. But my MCs are modern people, in their 20s and 30s. They listen to music! They're going to reference it!

I used to be a lot more of a frood. I'm not sure I've ever known where my towel is (in the slang, metaphorical sense), but I've been able to fake it for decades.

There have been more issues with setting up my new laptop than I expected. That absolutely cut into my writing for the first few days of the month — I had a 4-day complete hiatus, during which I was so busy with tech that I wrote nothing! A few other days have been fairly low in terms of time available for writing, but at least greater than zero.

I like reading short stories, but am awful at writing them. Not so much a fan of microfiction, but the range of roughly 2,000–8,000 words is pretty nice. Maybe even up to 10 or 12.

Possibly my favorite of those is one that shows me:
1) The last 4 things I did (my last 4 Git commit comments)
2) Status of all open, non-complete scene files
3) And a "todo" file that I keep stocked with notes on what I can tackle next.
It's a really good thing to look at when I start a writing session every night (or afternoon on weekends); it gives me excellent answers to the question "What the heck was I working on?" and its buddy, "Where can I pick up now?" 2/2

Not really.
If there were, it'd probably be Ireland and/or Japan, but no, I don't think either of those is influencing me all that much at the moment. (Yes, one of my MCs is Japanese-American, but that influence is coming from me having lived in Japantown, San Francisco for a while. That's *this* country.)

No. I can't even remember or recognize all of the single-letter alphabet signs. (Maybe about 15–20 of them?)
I used to be able to do the entire alphabet, and a few things like "thank you" and maybe 1 or 2 others, but I haven't had any use for it in decades, and have forgotten even the tiny bits I once had.

Not too bad. I spent an average of 1:22 writing on work days and 1:30 on weekend days, and produced 16,254 words (plus however many I'll manage today), which is a nice climb from the past few months. Completed 6 scenes (which roughly equals two-thirds of a chapter, I guess). And you never know, I might finish a 7th today!

It's more accurate to say that some (many? most?) projects simply get rotated to the back burner, because let's face it, there are only so many hours in a day. Some even get put into storage for a shorter or longer time, but could always be returned to the main burner.
The only way I think I'd *abandon* a creative project would be if I felt I could no longer do anything with it.

I assume it'd be boring as hell to anyone who wasn't inside my head. All three lines are from urban fantasies. The 1st one is the 1st line of Fritz Leiber's _Our Lady of Darkness_, a mix of horror and early UF that's set in San Francisco.
The 2nd comes from early in _The Last Hot Time_, by John M. Ford. It's straight-up UF, and set in a changed (and incredibly cool) Chicago.

I would absolutely not; graphic design is not one of my skills. If for some reason I had to, I'd go with some kind of design based on text and abstract shapes, because art is even less one of my skills. But in reality, I plan to either let my publisher handle cover art (assuming I find a publisher), or contract an artist/designer (assuming I don't).

Comedy, although it's a close thing. Watching someone completely ruin their life can be grand and full of pathos, and many of the best soliloquies are from tragedies, not comedies. But in the end, I prefer to walk out of the theater having laughed and had fun rather than having gone, "OMG, can you please not do the obviously catastrophic things?" for a couple of hours.

It was "Transverse City", the title track off Warren Zevon's very-cyberpunk 1989 album. My TTRPG group used to use this song to kick off our Shadowrun sessions from ~1997–2003.

Could be as little as a page or two, or it might take me up to a few chapters — let's say, maybe up to 15,000 words or so — before I decide to DNF something. (Given how slowly I read, I should probably learn to pull the ripcord earlier, but I feel so bad about doing so.)

Anywhere from about two seconds up to the entire length of the song. Usually in the 5–15 second range, though.
It's rarer for my tastes about a musical piece to change, although sometimes I find that something gets overplayed and I get tired of it for a while. But a period of non-exposure will usually get me back to liking it again.

Though I do sometimes change my mind about a piece, after some much longer time. The first time I saw "Guernica", I went, "Ugh, what a gross mess!" (I am not proud of this reaction.) A couple of years later, I finally got the point, and I'm now in agreement with most of the rest of the world in considering it a very powerful artwork. 2/2

Sometimes it can be as quick as "the moment I see it", if it's something that I can take in all in a glance. More complex things may take up to a full minute or more, if I have to really inspect the details and get a real understanding of the thing. 1/2

...couldn't make a pass at the woman he's driving around with... and therefore, couldn't pass as straight. (I initially thought it was only a double meaning, before discovering that Morrissey was gay. Even then, I thought it was clever, but the lyricist's homosexuality adds so much with that third level of meaning!)
Sadly, it turns out my mishearing was *way* more creative than Morrissey's actual line, which is merely "...and I just couldn't ask." Meh. 2/2

For the longest time, I misheard a line in the Smiths' "There is a Light That Never Goes Out". I heard it as:

Getting used to doing things on Linux. Some of my prior tooling really did smooth things over for me, and I really need to find a way to recreate it.

I definitely prefer a slashed zero, but there are loads of other things I like about DejaVu, so I put up with the dotted one. But maybe I'll give Input a look and see if I like it better. Thanks for letting me know about it, either way.

WTF, why does my Firefox spell checker now think that "ti" is a word?¹ And so it doesn't put a red squiggle under it?
I am a very good speller, but only a so-so typist; I know how to spell most words, but I make transposition typos pretty much every sentence. So I cast my eyes over the text entry field looking for red squiggles before I hit "Post".
How do I take a word *out* of Firefox's dictionary? Argh.
1. Oh, it thinks re , mi, fa, etc. are too. Crap.

I've found myself starting to just revert back to plain Alt+Tab, but I'll throw this one into the mix and see if it works better for me. I think it probably will; it gives thumbnails for all windows immediately (while Alt+Tab just gives a thumbnail for each window when you get to ti), and the 2 axes of motion instead of 1 mean there will *definitely* be times when it takes fewer keystrokes to get to the desired item.

Well, it looks like I've got all the stuff I need to do some writing. All my ancillary scripts and whatnot are working, I'm back in touch with my Git repo, all that jazz.
But I seem to have totally used up my brain power for today. (Last night's awful sleep didn't help.)
So I think I'm gonna skip writing tonight, and just veg with some kind of video or something.

Ooooh, that helps, thank you! I looked in the shortcuts list in the keyboard settings manager and didn't find any such thing.
You were right about Ctrl+Alt+UpArrrow. That just lets me switch workspaces (which maybe I should learn to use). And it turns out Ctrl+Alt+DownArrow gives me Scale, the window-picker. That's another good option for me.

Thanks, that at least introduced me to some new stuff.
I don't *need* it to be a keystroke, like for accessibility reasons or anything, but I find keyboard commands way faster than reaching for a pointing device and taking my fingers off the keys. In general, I'm looking for a solution where I can just know that a given keystroke will always take me to a particular window, and not have to think about it or find the window in Expo or Scale.

I want to be able to get to a specific open window without having to remember how many other windows I've been thru since the last time I used it, and without covering up other things I'm using. Is this possible in Linux Mint Cinnamon? Is there some other window manager or desktop environment that would give me that? 3/3

Current behavior: instead of cycling thru windows in the order they were opened after system startup, it cycles in most-recently-used order, and activates each window in turn (raising them above other things that were previously in front). 2/3

Okay, I probably can't have the behavior I want, but it can't hurt to ask, right?
What I want: Pressing Super+2 goes to the first-opened window of the application that's 2nd in the task bar. Pressing Super+2, holding Super and tapping 2 a second time goes to the second-opened of those windows, without activating the first. (Etc. for Super+N for any of the first 9 items on the task bar.) 1/3
