Lot's of prog and post metal for me! I find the fun stuff really happens in those moments in the noodling around and you can stretch outside of practicing or deliberate recording for something. oh man. Touching on too many topics to respond to. Efficiency & surplus, how homogenizing is always done on the terms of what homogenizes are other videos in that same series!
At too many levels to name, the habits and tendencies are carved from our previous experiences. Literally any action creates that groove, and ot gets smoother as you repeat. This is where I move into the not-so-metaphor of avalanches and cascades.
Any advancement or efficiency is repetitive tacking on of some weight over time. It's not really quantifiable because we'd be able to anticipate the consequences ahead of time. The concerns of LLMs are not so different from the concerns against the offloading of our memory to books. The concern was real (as much as others would like to dismiss), but the specific manifestation could only be hinted at. With each advancement of what we call language technology, we've stacked on a new weight at a slightly different angle, and we're now approaching the critical point before a cascade, but the cascade will happen one way or another because avoiding them at one magnitude inevitably still builds up into a larger one over time. The two manifestations in this case, at varing combined levels, are to become hyper-local insulated communities and/or becoming part of the homegenized herd.
This reply is long enough so ill conclude. The cascades are actually a sign of life and evolution, because they fundamentally reconfigure the system. Any pattern by definition is some rigidity, and I'm not pointing toward optimism or hopeless resign, but to synthesize an understanding to point at potential ways forward. My resolutions are not the same others will come up with, and that's the point. Because the varing solutions every individual and community creates is what keeps the system robust.

Think you might appreciate this video on how homogenizing is necessarily a consequence of what happens when translate or bring ideas to broader audiences. That it just what language does, and AI is an accelerant of that. I made a note on how you *almost* reluctantly described what nostr is and how it's at the base of Divine's machinery but is what provides free exit. I think that's one of the better approaches we can use. The exact opposite of telling specific communities to "join nostr" and dropping them in a kind 1 app typically doesn't go well imo.

Overall, good episode though, which left me more to reflect on after than I had coming into it.
I do have a problem with applying any sort of singular identity to a group of individuals or movements like "The Pagens" "The Occultists", "The Postmodernists". But if you're applying it towards a smaller set - those claiming to lead or monetarily influence causes - the message stays robust.

Because unless you acknowledge its existence, you can't even draw a boundary around what counts as an appropriate expression of it.

A tangent away from the morals of witchcraft practice, which I cannot comment on because I don't have any understanding, but towards the existence of magic itself.
I think Jeffrey Kripal's perspective on magic, the supernatural and the otherwise weird & uncanny is quite enlightening.
You start with the assumption that the experiences are real, that they are a manifestion of *something* - the psyche, altered states, intuition, trauma, whatever - but that the verbalized descriptions and interpretations are necessarily partial and biased. When you start at that level, you can actually begin investigating what they are because you recognize they exist and can look into why individuals report them beyond a materialist interpretation of them being just hallucinations or outright deceptive lies.
For example, what may be described as demonic posessions *may* be historically suffering and abused individuals with no outlet to express themselves, and the observed behavior, conscious or subconscious is what manifests as signal that something is wrong.
It is not a definitive claim of fact for what is, but a path that opens how to investigate these phenomena when you acknowledge the possibility for their existence. Because if you consider the alternative possibility, the implication is tragic. To fail in recognizing a suffering individual manifesting distress, to then ostracize them or historically burn them at the stake for not conforming. How similar are the reported symptoms of a posession to someone unable to deal with their own psychological and historical trauma? For example, the mentally ill, the abused and homeless.
And then the other aspect, these moments are less ameniable to scientific reproducability, especially if they are trauma driven. Science won't initiate trauma to a human being to identify the mechanisms of these experiences.
