Really important point made here: relay operators should be prepared for getting take-down orders. The more nostr matures, the worse this is going to get.
The point of nostr is not that you can ignore these takedown orders while fooling yourself into thinking that you somehow operate outside of the law because you run a nostr relay (or worse, put the people contacting you into actual danger while probably violating even more laws as you're at it).
Nostr does not prevent you from getting these orders or complying with them, unless you want to make yourself liable.
What Nostr *does* do is decentralize the content, so that it shouldn't matter if Will takes something down or Primal takes something down, bc other relays will still host the content.
If the only solution we see to dealing with these issues is being a child about it – instead of, idk, further decentralizing nostr hosting/broadcasting and treating it as a real problem we all need to deal with – we're in for a wild ride.

There‘s a lot of questions people have when this happens, so I want to address them one by one.
First, people ask why I still use an exchange.
The answer to this is simple: because I need money in my bank account to pay my bills, just like any other normal person.
Second, people recommend just using P2P services.
But P2P services are even worse. Small frequent amounts from random people paid into your bank account will get you banned from any bank immediately as it throws an instant AML flag.
Third, people blame the exchanges.
Every exchange this has happened to me on (apart from one) has been exceptionally helpful and constructive. This is not the exchanges fault.
So lets blame the banks!
Also wrong. This is not the banks fault - it is the fault of laws that have turned banks into undemocratic policing vehicles. The banks hate these laws as much as we do - because it causes them to spend billions of $ on braindead compliance bros.
I think its important to direct our anger where it matters:
against the system that has been built to make this happen, and not against those enforcing it, as they mostly have no other choice ✌️

My money has once again been frozen by an exchange.
As always, I try to explain that I am a journalist and make my money through donations. I send them my donations page – and of course that's not enough.
"Please show us receipts of when you purchased the bitcoin," they say. Because the concept of using bitcoin as money simply does not exist in the mind of a compliance bro.
Its not illegal to receive anonymous donations – in theory. In practice, the bank will freeze your accounts until you KYC every donation you receive. This is the problem with AML:
You can obey the law as it is written, and the bank will still penalize you without any chance at due process.
All this, of course, while Jeffrey Epstein and friends move hundreds of millions through the banks for human trafficking.

I think the „people can use any wallet they want“ part is actually the problem - it gives people decision overwhelm and then they dont know what to do. it also assumes that people already know how to use bitcoin.
Honestly i would just integrate cashu, its extremely easy to use and has failed maybe once for me in the past 12 months bc a mint i was on was doing some key rotations.
And before you cry about KYC and regulation: much like nostr relays, cashu mints are decentralized around the world.
If you argue for cashu to fail bc of regulation you are essentially arguing for nostr to fail bc of regulation, bc im not sure if you noticed, but theres no more non-kyc internet pretty soon, making non-censorship a federal crime.
If a network of decentralized mints cant navigate this, neither can a network of decentralized relayers.

The problem which Vitor here is conveniently oblivious to is that when I cash out my zaps, nobody knows where that money went to.
Its clear that regular zaps arent private - but they dont dox you and everyone else you interact with for the rest of eternity.
The risk here is that people who dont understand this will likely just send the zaps they make directly to their cold storage and will not go through the absolute pain of doing it privately, eg by mixing or swapping into XMR or LN.
Chainalysis would have an absolute field day with this. Like genuinely, biggest gift you could make them 10/10.

Leopoldo Lopez calls for real elections. He says Venezuela needs real democracy. Not a new connected elite.
These are admirable things. Lets see what he means by this.
In 2014, Leopoldo Lopez was arrested for leading violent protests in Venezuela. This fact is disputed, especially by those who advocated for his innocence.
What is undisputable is that a 2013 memo crafted under USAID supervision called exactly for what Lopez had been charged with: telling opposition members to „create crisis situations in the streets that facilitate U.S. and NATO intervention.“
„Whenever possible, the violence should result in deaths or injuries,“ the memo says.
And dozens of people did die in the protests Lopez led, with hundreds more being injured. This, too, is undisputed.
A few years later, in 2019, Juan Guaido led an uprising and declared himself President of Venezuela with support of the first Trump administration. No election, no democracy.
Guaido freed Lopez from house arrest, who is widely cited as his mentor.
During the time of Guaido‘s acknowledgment as the legitimate - though unelected - President of Venezuela by the international community, he robbed the country of an estimated 30B Dollars.
This included reserves at the New York Fed, which had been frozen due to sanctions - under guaido, the 400M Dollars belonging to the country dwindled to 30M. Over 350M dollars, gone.
It also included handing US vulture funds control of Venezuelan infrastructure - including funds led by American investor Paul Singer - and ballooned Venezuelas debt with international creditors from ~1B Dollars to more than 20B Dollars.
Due to his actions, Guaido quickly lost support even from his own party, and was eventually ousted.
As one opposition member stated: „Maduro, Guaido, Chavista […] They‘re all just thieves.“
So when Leopoldo Lopez speaks of „real elections,“ „democracy,“ and „a free venezuela for everyone,“ ask him if he means like the last times he attempted to take over the country with the help of the US.

This is a good question and this article is actually a very interesting example of how something can be misleading without necessarily being untrue - sry in advance for this being a very long post.
First, anyone deserves the right to a fair trial and not be shot in the street, and the Iranian government itself has acknowledged that several thousand people died in the January protests (though significantly less than masih claims).
Whatever the real number is we will probably never find out, but at least for analyzing this article it is beside the point, and ill explain why.
The dominant western narrative, which masih alludes to, is that people went on the street to protest against the economic oppression of the Iranian regime.
It started with protests from shop keepers, then average consumers and activists joined due to rising prices and out of control inflation. This is not disputed.
What is left out of the western narrative is that this situation was directly and deliberately caused by the US, for which US Treasury Sec Bessent has openly and publicly taken credit several times: that it was the US that directly caused the uprising by tightening US sanctions.
So first, the uprising wasnt organic - it was manufactured by a foreign entity.
Second, as many anti-regime and anti-intervention activists from within the country have reported, the protests started peacefully and the Iranian regime was ready to negotiate with the protesters. Then, predominantly described as „suddenly“, the protests turned violent.
Following and during the protests, several leaders and institutions, again openly and publicly, acknowledged - or should I rather say bragged about - the violence being driven by Israeli agents. This includes former CIA director Mike Pompeo, reports by the Israeli conservative pro-Likud Channel 14, netanyahu himself, as well as studies done by Kings College in London.
This ties back to the original narrative: that the regime was „killing its own people“ for „protesting“.
This is a very hard thing to wrap our heads around I think as, again, all killing is bad, so we must put it into perspective: for example by seeing how the US has indiscriminately killed civilians like Alex Pretti and Renee Good justified by there being a „foreign invasion“ of immigrants.
Does this killing of protestors justify calling for another country to bomb your country? I dont have an answer to that.
But if we read her article close enough, it quickly becomes clear that while decrying the deaths of civilians on one side, more civilian deaths are acceptable to her so long as they occur at the hand of the government she favors.
How do we know this? By way of the examples she uses, such as NATO intervention in serbia and Kosovo (yugoslawia), which she says „prevented humanitarian catastrophe“.
NATO intervention in yugoslawia has been described as an absolute travesty by all human rights groups that I am aware of.
Conservative estimates place civilian deaths at 500, inofficial numbers rise to over 5000. NATO deployed cluster munitions and depleted uranium, and destroyed the majority of its civilian infrastructure, from power plants to schools and hospitals.
The aftermath of NATOs intervention is an area that to this day has been struggling to rebuild, where extreme poverty and as a result addiction and human trafficking reigned.
So what masih names as „positive“ examples for potential intervention in Iran are, quite literally, war crimes that have devastated the lives of millions of people.
Second, masih compares the IRGCs killings of protestors with genocide - again, a tactic that is highly misleading.
Leaving aside whether the regime killed its own people or foreign agents (again we dont know and Im sure there were a good number legitimate protestors killed even if we do believe the foreign agent narrative), a genocide by definition is the deliberate targeting of a *national*, *ethnic*, *religious*, or *racial* group of people.
This is true for several of the examples she names, sa for the muslim minority in sebrenicq or for the situation in sudan.
But it is *not* true for what the Iranian regime did to protestors in January. Even if we believe that all of it is true and we leave out the foreign orchestration, these people were not targeted for their nationality, race, religion, or other belonging to a certain group. It is awful, but it is not genocidal by definition.
Lastly, let us look at where masih stands on actual genocide.
If youve been following her work, youll know that she is a stark supporter of the Israeli government.
Actions that by both the ICC and the ICJ have been qualified as genocide. Actions that have killed over 100,000 people, that have displaced almost the entire gazan population, that leave thousands and thousands of children without parents, scarred for life - actions that currently continue to expand into lebanon.
Im not saying this to be whataboutist btw - i dont believe you need to speak out on every conflict in the world to be taken seriously when you speak on one - but i do think that speaking about genocide while literally supporting another is at the very least some fairly incredible cognitive dissonance.
So the TLDR is, masih isnt necessarily lying - she is deliberately reframing a situation to mislead her readers into supporting war crimes on her own people, while exemplifying that she has no tear to shed for the deaths of civilians so long as it furthers her political agenda.
Its not lying. Its manipulation. And that is exactly how propaganda works to manufacture consent.

Someone has to say it: You cannot support Oslo Freedom Forum while supporting human rights.
Today I checked my spam folder and saw that the HRF has announced that Venezuelan opposition candidate Maria Corina Machado will be speaking at this year's OFF.
In December, Julian Assange filed a criminal complaint against the Nobel Foundation for awarding last years peace prize to Machado, arguing – with substantial legal basis – that the payout of the 1M$ prize money would amount to complicity in war crimes.
Machado has repeatedly called for US bombing of her own country, has endorsed the US' extrajudicial killings of fishermen at sea – classified as war crimes by countless legal scholars around the world –, and has told Netanyahu that she "greatly appreciates his decisions and resolute actions in the course of war, as well as Israel's achievements," according to the Israeli government.
In case you are wondering, that is the same Netanyahu who currently has an outstanding arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, and whose government has been found to plausibly be infringing on the UN Genocide Convention by the International Court of Justice.
Go to OFF for all I care and tell yourself that you are doing something good for bitcoin. But know that if you do, you are, quite literally, taking a stand against humanity.

A lot of people ask why Roman Sterlingov’s prosecution may be as important as the prosecutions of Roman Storm and the Samourai devs, when one allegedly operated a custodial mixer and the others built a non-custodial software protocol.
The answer lies in how Sterlingov was identified as Bitcoin Fog’s operator – and it could happen to anyone.
At yesterday’s hearing, judges pushed back against the idea that Sterlingov “likely” operated BF.
Why? Because the main piece of evidence tying Sterlingov to BF is an IP address that was used to log into a Liberty Reserve account tied to BF.
A few minutes before, Sterlingov had used that same IP address to log into a Liberty Reserve account under his own name.
The prosecution argued that it is therefore “likely” that Sterlingov operated BF. But how “likely” is it really?
“Likely” is a comparative term, the judges argued yesterday. Could the prosecution present any framework for what constitutes “likely” in this case?
It could not: An IP address can be used by tens or thousands of people at the same time when using a public WiFi or a VPN. By how many on average? The prosecution didn't know.
Without the IP address tying Sterlingov to the Liberty Reserve account tied to BF, the entire case falls apart:
Because the cryptocurrency tracing is also tied to that same IP address – all it shows otherwise is funds from Sterlingov’s KYCed MtGox account flowing to a wallet outside of MtGox, exemplified by the Government with a literal black piggy bank with a question mark.
No one knows who that wallet belongs to.
From there, the funds flowed back into MtGox, and *numerous* hops later, through several other exchanges, wallets and addresses, test payments had been made to BF.
Again: the only evidence tying Sterlingov to BF is that someone with the same IP address logged into an account tied to BF in that chain of payments.
That could have been anyone on the same VPN or public WiFi – and it could have been you.
According to the Government, ofc there were other "indications" making it "likely" that it was him - such as an email showing that Sterlingov used Liberty Reserve and AurumXchange.
If you've been around long enough, you'll know that everyone used AurumXchange. And that everyone used Liberty Reserve. Bc bitcoin was early, and not many services existed.
The moral of this story is that if you happen to use the same VPN as a criminal, and you also use the most popular services a criminal uses, the government may send you to prison for over a decade for a crime it finds “likely” you committed with no framework of what “likely” even means.
This is the bar for factual evidence this case sets that can be used to send people to prison.

I think you missed the part where i clarified that the shade toward „human rights activists“ wasnt directed at paul.
As for my criticisms of Alinejad, those are all verifiable facts stemming from USG spending and Congressional records.
I wouldnt call that throwing shade - Id call that giving people more factual context on a person who openly and consistently justifies US & Israeli bombing of civilians.

Masih Alinejad is not a freedom fighter. She is a US paid actor to spread misinformation on Iran to manufacture consent for the US' illegal war on the country and its consequent war crimes to destabilize the region in favor of USRael, and the receipts are freely verifiable for anyone.
Over the past 10 years, Alinejad has been paid almost a Million Dollars by the US Agency for Global Media, an initiative founded during WW2 with the purpose of winning the "global struggle for minds and wills" with the programs Voice of America and later Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, which have been widely documented to be covertly funded by the CIA.
As Senator Edward Zorinsky said of the program (then still called USIA), it "would be no different than an organ of Soviet propaganda if its products were to be available domestically," arguing for these disinformation vehicles to be banned for the blatant psychological manipulation they entail, which stand against any and all values we hold dear in a democracy.
Personally I think its great that we now have such amazing human rights activists in our ranks that swoop these paid pro-war propaganda people like Alinejad for free into our communities. Well done everybody. Somewhere in Langley someone is very proud of you.
