Might be the same plant. But with common names you never really know. Anyways, I'm trying to go with the native plants, since they're usually best adapted to the local climate. I also forage seeds of native plants in the wild to cultivate them in my garden. And often foreign edible plants have native cousins that are also edible with a similar pupose. E.g. "flea seeds" (psyllium) are seeds of foreign Plantago indica & afra. Plantago minor & major are common native weeds.

Yeah, exactly goosefoot is called "Gänsefuß" here, too. Direct translation. Common weed. Another perennial: Good King Henry or in German "Guter Heinrich" is Chenopodium bonus henricus. I also grow Chenopodium gigantaeum, which is called "Baumspinat" or "Magentaspreen" in German. Tree spinach would be a direct translation. But I don't know the English name. They are all edible in all parts of the plant, mostly the leafs and seeds are eaten. And Chenopodium quinoa is, well, quinoa.

The funny thing is: Quinoa is a type of Chenopodia. And several other types of Chenopodia already grow here voluntarily as a weed. Also entirely edible, also protein rich seeds that can be used as a food source. There's a lot of hardy and somewhat drought tolerant native crops in the wild here already. I'm having fun foraging and eating those.

Da, wo gestern noch die bunten Zwiebeln standen, habe ich heute das Herbstgemüse ausgesät. Hauptsächlich Rüben, Beete und Mangold in allerlei Farben. Aber auch ein paar Möhren, Kohlrabi, Pak Choi und Kohlrüben. Die Wilde Möhre, die dort freiwillig aufgegangen war und ein paar der in Blüte gegangenen Zwiebeln, lasse ich stehen, um später Saatgut zu nehmen. I've never tried sowing the harvested peas right away, actually. Tell me if they sprout! I'm not sure they will. For one, I've only ever worked with dried seeds. Don't know if they actually need to dry first, before germination. For two, I don't know if they have a seasonal dormancy or something, like potatoes do. You cannot plant this year's potato harvest right away. They will only ever sprout next year. So, yeah, I appreciate your feedback on this experiment.

Maybe some will come again, if they are not dead yet and you don't cut them too low. But no, generally, they don't grow back, esp. not in the climbing kind of fashion But the season is still going. Just sow another batch.

Yeah, if it's the only one in the wild, I wouldn't take seeds either. But if it's not, I do take seeds from wild plants for my garden all the time. The good thing about the wildplants is that they're best adapted to your local conditions. So they will grow much better and healthier in your garden than any store bought plant ever will.

I usually only start 4-6 seeds from each variety of tomatoes in mid to late March and grow no more than 4-6 varieties. I successively make more plants from the removed prunings, if I need them and have the space. It takes way less indoor growing space by May than starting 50 seeds in February. And the clones are not less prolific. They produce just as well. It's my secret #gardening hack. 😉 #garden #tomatoes #growOwnFood

Obwohl ich heute mehrere Kubikmeter Erde und Geröll bewegt habe, hatte ich abends noch Kraft für ein Küchenexperiment: Rucola-Pasta. Eigentlich Spinat-Pasta, nur aus Spinat, Mehl und Salz, die man im Mixer miteinander zu einem Teig verknetet. Aber es gibt grad keinen Spinat, daher hab ich den durch anderes Grünzeug ersetzt. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass es klappt. Aber es hat funktioniert und die Kinder haben's mir aus den Händen gerissen. Einziges Manko: Es war viel zu wenig.

I don't know what kinds of bunnies you have locally. But I happen to have two European bunnies (Oryctolagus) as pets and they jump an 18 inch fence easily. I don't know if they would necessarily do it in the wild and for reaching food (when there's plenty of accessible food around). But when my rabbits get the zoomies, they are basically living in a 3d space.

Don't stress yourself out! The only sowing you could be behind with in January that I can think of is ramson. That you should've sown in December. But leeks, cellery, peppers, kale are all just fine with sowing in February. Or what else is it that you think you are late with?

🇩🇪 Hat jemand eine Idee, von welchem Baum diese ca. 30cm lange Hülsenfrucht sein könnte? Ich dachte zuerst Johannisbrotbaum, aber der zugehörige Baum war ~30m hoch und trug kein Laub. Gesehen heute am Straßenrand in Hamburg.

Aaaahh, Panik, es ist noch nicht mal 2026 und die Frau hat schon ihre Beetplanung am Start!? Also ich hab ja letztes Jahr meinen ultimativen Beetplan für ganzjährigen Anbau in Rotation mit Fruchtfolge-Beachtung gebastelt, also einen, der quasi jedes Jahr gleich bleibt und immer nur je 1 Beet weiter rückt. Aber in der Praxis muß ich nach dem Umzug überhaupt erst mal neue Beete anlegen. Und dann werde ich einfach erst mal hintereinander weg pflanzen und säen, was gerade dran ist.

Thanks for tagging, yes. It's about preserving root veggies in moist sand. Carrots, parsnips, parsley roots and black salsify preserve well with this method. Even in frost conditions. Potatoes can be preserved in moist sand, too, but must be kept frost free.

Falls ihr, wie ich, größere Mengen Wurzelgemüse (Möhren, Pastinaken, Petersilienwurzel, Schwarzwurzel) über den Winter bringen müßt und noch keine Erdmiete habt: Kübel mit feuchtem (nicht nassem) Sand und regensicher abdecken. We've insulated our log plank house with wood wool. Initially, we wanted to take sheep wool. But couldn't get a hold of it, when it was needed. Instead, the wood wool (I don't know from which plant, but it's an organic fibre) has much better insulation properties and the moisture/mold problem is solved with calculating condensation points. In a log plank house he entire wall is breathable. So all the humidity collected in the walls will evaporate during the course of the day.

Okay, that sounds quite doable. But if you want to use the hydrosol to scent soap why even bother with separating water and oil? You could just steam the herbs right back into the pot and then use the water / essential oil mix from the pot (cooled down) to create your lye? That would remove one step, that is unneccessary at least if you intend to use your essential oil in soap making. Or will the small amount of essential oil in the water mix interfere with the lye making process?

As a mother I often eat my kids leftovers. Yesterday, I found out that I can even eat the pizza rind my kids will leave on the plate. I just put the rinds in a bowl and threw another spoon full of sauce, veggies and cheese on top and baked them in the oven.
Usually they go on the compost pile, like most other organic matter. Bones, we use to make broth. And afterwards, they too go on the compost pile. Organs we feed to wildlife in the forest, as we have no dogs yet.

Yeah, that's my fear. What if I am sick or whatever and can't harvest regularly or the animals die and don't eat it or whatever. Will it take over the entire landscape? I think, as long as you keep it in check manually, it's manageable. But what if I can't crawl anymore in the future?

I know that already. But my research says the clumping ones are neither tasty, nor suitable for building trellisses. So I'm already focussing more on the creeping ones. The question is, which ones for my area with short daylight and negative degrees in winter? And are they containable with a barrier, harvesting and live stock eating them or will it definitely get out of hand?

But it is also excellent winter fodder for rabbits and a nice building material for the garden. So I'm kind of tempted to try it out here in Northern Germany zone 7b. My own research says Phyllostachys edulis (Moso) is hardy to zone 6–9, the most tasty and grows thick stems up to 8m. Is it even containable with a rhizome barrier? Hat jemand ne Idee, was das für eine Apfelsorte sein könnte? Die Früchte sind recht groß, haben durchgehend diese rosarote Schale mit wenigen, nicht klar abgegrenzen helleren Stellen. Das Fruchtfleisch ist gelblich und angenehm ausbalanciert zwischen süß und sauer, knackig, saftig und mehlig. I stopped having issues with being the odd one out when I was about 16. Like Laury, I didn't die my hair red, but I put a frame around that crack in the wall. I was an out and proud queer and didn't care what others thought of me.
However, I care a lot about what I think of myself. I hold myself to a very high standard and I'm afraid I might not have the spoons to live up to my own standards now anymore. It feels like a loss, like a defeat.

I use them to feed my compost worms and regulate ph in the worm farm. I also add them to my compost. They're a good calcium source. Also, I've found that my parsnips are growing exceptionally well in soil amended with eggshells. I also add them to my turtoise enclosure / drystone garden / medierranian herbs bed for the turtoises to eat.

Die ersten Asia-Salate, Scherkohl und Kohlrabi sind in der Erde. Damit habe ich eine halbe Woche Vorsprung vor dem Gartenplan. Alles wird auch im Polytunnel immer noch mit Vlies abgedeckt, weil es nachts immer noch -4°C hat. Tagsüber ist es im Gewächshaus allerdings zu Spitzenzeiten schon über 30°C warm. Jepp, I stopped composting them a while ago, when it became clear that most producers insert plastic fibres to make the bags more durable in contact with water. Despite often being advertised as "compostable" products contain plastics that are then decomposed into micro plastics. Not what I want in my compost or food at all.

Sure. It is. But I wanted to know what it is that works in your local environment in zone 10. It is pretty much the same that works in mine, too, even though I'm zone 7B and have seasons: Mulching, filling spaces, leaving no bare soil, using ground cover crops and inter cropping, and yes, weeding, too. I'm having similar problems with dry beans in my climate. Would it make sense to cut the vines earlier in the year (during the dry season) and hang them up in a barn to dry? Has anybody tried this and can share their experience? #gardening

I overwinter my pepinos, because seeds are hard to come by here and they grow rather slow. This year I'm also trying to overwinter some special pepper varieties. But tomatoes are usually so easy to grow from seed and then propagate through cuttings. I find it too much work to overwinter them. But there are guides out there.

Did you know that Tomatoes are perennial? You could theoretically overwinter them indoors in a pot in a cooler spot. However, since tomatoes grow pretty quickly, it seems more efficient to start them indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost day. Plant them outside only after temperatures are stable above 10°C.

How do you sieve your compost? I use a fruit basket to shake it through and everything that is too big goes back into the pile. But it's still hard work and I'm dreaming of having some sort of rolling mechanism thingy.

Why not mix it with your potting soil? I don't know if I'd use pure castings, though? They might be too rich and wet. Seedlings might grow poor roots, if they're "over fed" or even rot. But I never actually experimented with that, just quoting other gardeners' concerns. I guess, one of the reasons for good germination rates in compost piles is the higher (relative to surrounding garden beds) temperature.

One of my dead dried turmeric tubers from last year came to life again in my worm box. I took it out and planted it in a self wicking box bed with its other friends from the ginger family. Looking forward to harvest. I also use worm tea to fertilize my seedlings in the nursery. I'm getting better at seed starting every year.
