engines were designed to take advantage of the lead in the gas. if you have one of that era of car, you need a special additive to not have the engine "knock"...
in roman times, they deliberately added lead to drinking water.

colorado is trying to address this in state law, encouraging roofs that are more fire resistant and hail resistant. i got a cedar shake shingle roof replaced with a top rated coated metal roof with the insurance company picking up most of it and also lowering my insurance bill noticably.

two areas i'm wondering what your thoughts are:
- when fuzzing tools became more commonly available and used, a lot of failures in checking input bugs were caught. do you think there will be similar areas of more benefit with AI checking and what might those be?
- there is a lot of temptation to not just find bugs via AI but then vibe code fixes. do you think we'll be seeing a zero sum game between bugs found vs new bugs created or lack of maintainability due to that vibe coding?

something can be consistently bad or broken. a bad security "best practices" checklist is one good example. :)
you can't have security without consistent effort and processes, but you can be consistent while never achieving security.
"compliance == security" is right up there with "change == progress" in ways you can confuse things. :)

you do get consistency and at least a base level of security. the trick is to not fall into the trap that compliance == all the security you need to do.
i like to describe it as like the 4th grade reading level of many newspapers. that doesn't get you a college grad. you can't get to college without passing by 4th grade but you have a lot of work left. but at least if everyone reads at minimum 4th grade, you have a basis for publishing and sharing.
also, if you don't have at least 4th grade level, you already know the critical thing to fix first.

i've been thinking pretty seriously about getting a hurdy gurdy. been considering doing a kit. i have built a guitar, a mandolin, and a banjo from scratch, and did a short apprenticeship in instrument repair, so i don't need a beginner kit.
anyone have any experience with someone doing high quality hurdy gurdy kits?

this reminds me of the "blood on the highway" drivers ed film that was supposed to scare us into driving safely but was generally viewed as a classic right up there with all the horror and slasher films.

it's a slippery slope. my partner and i have been experimenting with a huge range of cuisines, all of which have signature spices/herbs. we have a wall of cabinets in the laundry room more or less full of various spices, herbs, or specialty ingredients.
does mean that we have saved huge amounts not ordering takeout/delivery and learned all sorts of things about various countries and cultures.

my favorite linkedin story...
in my decades long career, i've had one single "management" job. sr director. only 6 months at that company/job. everything else was SME/individual contributor for my entire career.
i got contacted by an executive headhunter for a VP of engineering job. i was already morbidly curious about what kind of supposedly executive headhunter could think i was a VP candidate, so took the call.
it was a startup company, first round of funding, yet had no VP of eng yet.
so, i ask innocently, what's the company's plan/product?
recruiter: "oh, we're building an AI based linkedin scraper to automate looking for suitable candidates."
i pause for a moment to try to figure out the least tactless response i could.
me: "huh... interesting. and did you use this product to find my resume?"
recruiter: "exactly!"
me: "i'd suggest you find and hire a qualified VP of engineering and some engineering staff and give them 6 months of coding work *before* you try using your own product to find any candidates. thanks for your time."

i was working for a large corporation during a time they were going through the due diligence for a merger. since both companies were publicly traded, there were some very strict SEC rules about access to the info from both companies.
in order for me to see said documents to do the techical review, it required that i used only windows explorer, disable all ad blockers, all security features, and authenticate over an insecure web link.
yay for security...

when i was living in NV, the law was that if you weren't a company with at least 25 employees or a govt agency, there were no restrictions on how badly insurance companies could screw you. it was basically major medical coverage only at $15k/year...

there were definitely some of the "entertainment" dishes from the 50s/60s still in my 70s version but gone by the later editions.
betty crocker went through a similar progression, according to friends weened on that instead of joy of cooking.
no longer starting recipes with "open a can of campbell's ___" too. ;)

my first cookbook, given to me by my mother when i left for college, was a used "joy of cooking" (probably 70s edition?). i bought a later version she redid with her daughter, which had much healthier recipes but just not as tasty.

never underestimate the boldness/stupidity of humanity.
one of the more memorable (but appetite killing) breakfasts i had working at a hospital one summer was sitting with an ER doctor/nurse crew. they were comparing things they'd pulled out of places you aren't suppose to put such things over the holidays. some did seem to defy the laws of physics, physiology, and good sense...

i think our "peak" at that stage was daquiri evening. we'd run out of every possible mixer, had way too many daquiris already, but still had ice, rum, and a blender left. at that stage, we posited that perhaps nacho cheese doritos might make a tasty daquiri.

ah, the "thank you, toilet bowl, for being cool on my face as i rest for a moment" ceremony.
one halloween, in my 20s, i was dressed as a drow elf, black face paint, etc. had a 42oz kamazi "shooter", then spent the evening worshipping a pink toilet bowl. trying to be a considerate drunk, i thought i'd wiped all the black face paint off the side of the toilet bowl.
next morning, hung over but sober, i saw that i'd just been creating a modern art finger painting all over it.
not one of my finer moments.

ability to read a map was never universal and it's definitely diminished with the ubiquity of GPS.
i dated someone in high school who told me of her dad's attempts to get his 3 girls to read a map on car trips. this led to lines like:
"is this a blue road or a red road we're on?"
"is it many inches to the next rest stop?"

i read my email with xemacs/mh-e, which doesn't previsit links, so doesn't work for tracker links in emails. also lets me see exactly what URL they are trying to get me to click, regardless of how they try to obfuscate it.
depressing how much email uses stupid tricks that work with gmail/outlook...
