Its much better than normal SMS due to it being encrypted but the phone number thing can be a concern. I primarily use it for talking to people I know in IRL that have my number anyway. Its easier to convince them to use signal than other services and its better than just straight texting. Session or simplex are much more privacy friendly and don't require an app or a phone number, but ive found its harder to convince people to use those.

Agreed, I wish they would allow a desktop only install. With the phone number at least they allow VoIP numbers, but that can have the downside of people being able to find you.

Its been a LONG time since I've used a Mac so I have no point of comparison. I do use both windows and Linux (ubuntu mostly) on a regular basis and in general my experience has been that windows is quicker out of the gate (easier to get programs running, services connected, etc. ) but linux has offered far more options and adaptability over the long term.

I'm with you on that! For me proton has been most helpful as a stepping stone for getting non-technical friends and family out of the google / apple cloud systems. Its not perfect, but its progress.

I like the article and the sentiment, but thats not an accurate statement about Proton.
They have an option for account recovery using a recovery phrase or recovery file, but their password reset option only provides you access to the account, it won't decrypt your existing data. In other words, you could still use your email but anything stored prior to the reset would effectively be useless.

I'm not super familiar with the WD mycloud but I would hazard a guess that they use a proprietary file system that isn't recognized by the new NAS. If that is the case you'll likely need to reformat the drives to make them work with the new NAS. If you have a PC available you may be able to copy your old data before formatting the drives but that can get tricky with having enough storage available.
If it were me I would buy new drives for the new NAS, use a PC to copy your old data to the new NAS then sell or repurposed the old drives
