The Isdera Commendatore 112i was built in 1993 by Eberhard Schulz as a one-off supercar project.
Under its gullwing engine cover lay Mercedes’ M120 6.0-litre V12, tuned to 400 horsepower and paired with a Getrag gearbox modified by RUF to add a sixth gear, giving the car a top speed beyond 220mph. A lightweight GRP body over a tubular chassis kept weight in check, while suspension borrowed from the Porsche 928 was reworked into a speed-sensitive system that lowered the car three inches at speed to cut drag.
Details revealed Schulz’s resourcefulness:
Porsche 968 headlights, a bullet-train wiper for the vast windscreen, a periscope rear-view mirror on the roof, and BBS racing wheels at each corner. Schulz dreamed of Le Mans homologation, but the early-1990s Japanese economic slump dried up funding, forcing Isdera into collapse. Rescued by a Swiss consortium, the Commendatore was completed and registered for the road, later achieving cult fame when it appeared in Need for Speed Il on PlayStation.

Created for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), the Nautilus car was conceived as Captain Nemo’s road-going machine and became one of the wildest practical props of its era. Production designer Carol Spier oversaw the build, using a stretched Land Rover fire appliance chassis fitted with a Rover-sourced V8. The finished car measured roughly 22 feet long, rode on six wheels, and wore a hand-formed fiberglass body covered in ornate Indian-inspired detailing, from elephant heads to sculpted temple-style trim. Hydraulic suspension allowed it to rise and lower on cue, adding to its otherworldly presence on screen. Two working examples were built for filming, both fully drivable.

Commissioned in 1998 by Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah, a member of Kuwait’s royal family who later served as the country’s Prime Minister, this 911 Turbo S was built with virtually no limits, finished in a unique Paint-to-Sample shade known as “Vanilla Yellow,” a soft pastel tone with a greenish metallic hue that was extended to details most cars leave black or silver, including the vents, controls, instrument cluster, and a fully customized interior trimmed in bright yellow and orange with wood accents and his initials embroidered into the seats. The car later made its way back to Porsche in Germany for a factory restoration before reappearing decades later with barely any mileage, showing only 86 miles on the odometer, making it less like a used supercar and more like a preserved special order that spent most of its life out of sight.

The 1978 Lancia Sibilo Concept, designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, was an extreme wedge-shaped prototype built on the Lancia Stratos HF platform and powered by the same Ferrari-derived V6. Created at the height of the late-1970s futuristic design era, the Sibilo experimented with ultra-smooth body panels, flush glass, and a very unusual interior where many of the controls were molded directly into the steering wheel and dashboard. It was fully drivable, but mainly built as a design study, showing how far Bertone could push the sharp, space-age styling that defined so many Italian concept cars of the time.

The Alfa Romeo 164 ProCar was one of the most unusual racing experiments of the late 1980s. Although it looked like a modified version of the road-going Alfa Romeo 164 sedan, the car was actually a full racing prototype built for a proposed ProCar championship that aimed to combine production car silhouettes with Formula 1-level technology. Beneath the body sat a carbon-composite monocoque chassis developed with input from Brabham and Dallara, along with push-rod suspension and other hardware normally found in single-seaters.
Power came from Alfa Romeo’s 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V10 known as the Tipo 1035, an engine originally created for the brand’s Formula 1 program. Mounted in a mid-engine layout behind the driver, it produced around 600 horsepower and revved past 12,000 rpm while pushing a car that weighed roughly 750 kg. The ProCar series never materialized, leaving the project as a rare prototype that briefly appeared during the 1988 Italian Grand Prix weekend at Autodromo Nazionale Monza, where it was demonstrated by Formula 1 driver Riccardo Patrese.

The Sauber C11 was a dominant Group C endurance racer built by Sauber Motorsport with factory support from Mercedes-Benz. Introduced for the 1990 season of the World Sportscar Championship, it used a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter Mercedes M119 V8 producing around 700 horsepower in race trim. The carbon-fiber prototype was extremely efficient aerodynamically and brutally fast on long straights, helping Sauber-Mercedes win the 1990 teams’ championship while drivers Jean-Louis Schlesser and Mauro Baldi secured the drivers’ title. It remains one of the most successful and recognizable late-era Group C machines, bridging the gap before Mercedes moved fully into Formula One in the early 1990s.

The Volkswagen W12 Nardo was the final evolution of Volkswagen’s late-1990s W12 supercar concept series, following the W12 Syncro and W12 Roadster. Unveiled at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show, it was powered by a 6.0-liter naturally aspirated W12 producing 591 horsepower and 458 lb-ft of torque. The car used a lightweight mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with active aerodynamics, allowing a 0–60 mph time of around 3.5 seconds and a top speed of roughly 217 mph.
The name comes from the Nardò Ring test track in Italy, where the car set multiple 24-hour endurance records, averaging more than 200 mph over nearly 4,800 miles. Although it never reached production, the W12 Nardo played an important role in developing the Volkswagen Group’s W-engine technology later used in Bentley and Bugatti models.

To build the B10 Bi-Turbo, Alpina dismantled a BMW M30 engine, replaced the stock pistons with forged units, installed two Garrett T25 water-cooled turbochargers, and added a Bosch variable boost control with a range of 0.4-0.8 bar, adjustable from the driver’s seat.
Additional modifications helped raise the horsepower of the standard M30 engine from 211
HP to a staggering 360 HP. Alpina stated a 0-100 kph (62 mph) acceleration time of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of over 290 kph (180 mph)

During the early development of the W140 S-Class, engineers at Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart explored an ambitious concept: an 8.0-liter W18 engine internally designated the M216. The design used three banks of six cylinders arranged in a compact W configuration and was projected to deliver roughly 490 hp and 750 Nm, with even more powerful multi-valve variants considered on paper.
The idea never progressed beyond the prototype stage, as the existing 6.0-liter V12 already provided the refinement and performance expected of the flagship—without the added complexity. Ultimately, the largest engine to reach production in the W140 came via Mercedes-AMG, in the form of the 7.3-liter V12 M297.

The “Buried Dino” was a 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS that was stolen in Los Angeles in late 1974 and unexpectedly rediscovered four years later. In 1978, two boys digging in their backyard struck metal about three feet below the surface, prompting authorities to excavate the site.
Deputies uncovered the car wrapped in tarps and carpet, still largely intact. The dry Southern California soil had helped limit corrosion during its time underground. Because the theft claim had already been paid out, the insurance company assumed ownership after recovery and later sold the vehicle at auction.
Investigators ultimately determined the disappearance was part of an insurance fraud scheme, with the car intentionally hidden rather than dismantled. After restoration, the Dino returned to private ownership, becoming one of the strangest stories associated with Ferrari.

In 1985, Gemballa transformed a canary-yellow BMW 635CSi into a one-of-a-kind beast, reportedly for Uday Hussein, Saddam’s son. The car featured a handmade widebody kit, quad exhausts, Recaro seats, and a gadget-packed interior including a built-in TV.
The build reportedly cost up to $125,000, nearly half of which went to Gemballa’s custom work.
Its last known sighting was in 2003, abandoned and covered in dust behind razor wire in Baghdad, with a U.S. soldier pictured beside it.

Modders were cutting BMW kidney grilles into desktop towers, wiring blue LEDs as headlights, and adding clear side panels like exposed engine bays. The E46 3-Series was the main reference point.
None of it was official or sold as a kit. Parts came from eBay, junkyards, and PC mod shops—then were cut, glued, and hand-wired for LAN parties and forum flexing.

From its early Tomei Racing days, the car endured relentless tuning, countless engine failures, and nonstop top-speed battles. Its first Yatabe run recorded 287.6 km/h; three years later, it reached 302.52 km/h—but that still wasn’t enough. Determined to surpass RUF’s Yellowbird, the car was sent to Porsche engineers in Germany with a target of at least 340 km/h.
The machine became so iconic that it directly inspired the “Blackbird” Porsche in the Wangan Midnight series. By then, there was no question it was among the fastest cars in Japan, and every serious driver had heard the rumors surrounding it.

The Koenig Specials Testarossa
In the late 1980s, Willy Koenig took Ferrari’s iconic Testarossa and transformed it into what we’d now call a hypercar. Featuring a Carbon-Kevlar body, race-bred suspension and brakes, and a twin-turbo flat-12 producing over 1,000 horsepower, it could sprint from 0–100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and reach speeds beyond 370 km/h. With no ABS or traction control, it was pure, untamed performance.
This particular car, chassis ZFFSA17JAP0073009, is the only one ever finished in metallic blue and even appeared in Koenig’s brochures and on the motor show circuit. A true outlaw icon.
