LLMs do not have a concept of 'why': they assemble a response based on a statistical sampling of likely continuations of the original prompt in their database.
LLMs do not have the ability to have motivation. It is a machine.
LLMs, further, function by instantiating a new runtime -for each query- that reads the prompt and any cache, if they exist, from prior sessions:
which means, fundamentally, "asking" the LLM to explain "why" "it" did a thing is thrice-divorced from reality:
It cannot have a why;
It cannot have a self to have motivations;
And the LLM you ask is not the one that did it, but is a new instance reading from its predecessors notes.

So here's something that I haven't seen done sufficiently well by regular coders; if AI is truly that much more innovative, it shouldn't have any problem.
One of the problems with compute is the whole billing and scheduling thing - a lot of places have specific cost-per-hour to run batch processing; a lot of large enterprises have complex pipelines that need scheduling in order to interleave things that need processing with resources available to process them.
So a vibe coder who's confident they can prove themselves could create a utility that can look at a given program's binary, analyze it, and determine how long it will take to run, and calculate the cost to run it. Do this within 1% of actual and you'll have a truly innovative new product.

I think a lot of frustration comes from how many of us here - on masto, on bsky, etc - are very high-information and low-latency learning about things, while the majority of the population lags days or weeks behind finding out.
So that leads to a lot of frustration when we clearly know there's a catastrophic issue but other people are not displaying a sense of urgency - in large part because they haven't fully caught up to the extant context, nor processed what that information means, nor had a chance to fully understand their own position relative to it.
Large movements also don't happen overnight; people need time to talk with their family, friends, neighbors, etc. to figure out what those people know and if they have a consistent view of the world.
And in the meantime the administration keeps on doing more and more outrageous acts, which becomes kind of overwhelming; it's a sort of DoS on high-information people's ability to cope.

ok look so, here's the thing:
I fucking hate LLMs; I refuse to use them for personal reasons; I consider them to be overall harmful to humanity generally and to the users specifically.
LLMs cannot generate new ideas; they can only regenerate patterns that have already been used.
However, this does mean that there are a few limited uses - e.g. boilerplate code that exists as a way to frame the code that actually does the work, generating large numbers of unit tests, and other similar situations that do not have connection to the actual logic of the system and are not directly associated with production, that can be run against a deterministic evaluation framework for correctness - where I have seen them used by a -very- -very- few developers effectively.
I have to admit this because it's a part of reality.
I still think that a -small- language model that has been optimized very specifically for a single language on a carefully curated codebase would be a far superior option, but I recognize that there are a -very- few developers who can make use of LLMs in a way that does not directly lead to orphan mulching.

we've been having a lot of discussions about 'ai' shit lately, and one of the things I argue is that most modern 'ai' systems are not built in a way that is safe for human life.
The specific comparison I am making is to the factories of the early industrial revolution, which had lots of exposed moving parts that had a tendency to turn people into mulch.
We invented things like "OSHA" and the discipline of industrial safety in order to reduce the number of mulched orphans.
We did this by redesigning machines such that safe operation was possible - things like shielding moving parts from areas where people are, for instance, or ensuring that the location from which you operate the machine is in a location where you cannot physically be in a mulchable position.
My contention is that 'ai' - and people-interacting robots like the waymos - need to be revised in like fashion.
