I'm curious what the Fediverse would recommend as a resource for learning MS-DOS in 2026.
I have limited exposure to it having grown up mostly on Windows 9x, but I use a Linux CLI and these days, I always opt for Powershell in the rare cases where I use Windows because it supports Unix-like commands. As such, I'm very limited on what I know about using DOS.
I see some tutorials on Youtube, I'm just curious what y'all think.

I'd go for the Steam Machine personally (I just love Valve) but I like the fact that Steam Machines are designed to allow competition, just as the Steam Deck was. Valve understands basic economics and the fact that healthy competition drives down prices and improves the experience for consumers.

The "Strike" games are easily some of the best games on the Genesis. I was always a fan of Urban Strike, personally, but Desert Strike is undoubtedly the definitive classic.

This game is criminally underrated. It has a very retro-like run-and-gun chaos to it, but it also has a solid open world mission structure with fun vehicle combat and a Mad Max-meets-Borderlands vibe.

Has anyone played Arcade Paradise?
I've put about an hour into it so far as I have it on GOG, and I love the concepts, but the early stages with running the laundromat are pretty tedious. I'm sure it will get better once I actually get to opening the arcade, though, which is why I plan to keep playing.

You'd definitely think they'd want their own custom operating system, but it's not quite as cut-and-dry as that. By using software supported by a massive tech company with all sorts of contracts with the government, they can effectively commission custom versions of that software for their own use and have support long after the consumer and business grades.
It's a lot of work maintaining an OS, and personally, I'd rather it be done by the private sector anyway (even if I hate MS).

They use Windows for most of the "normie" employees but I'd be willing to bet they use some form of Linux for the more secure stuff. Windows with Bitlocker is secure against criminals who steal a computer, but that's about it. LUKS on Linux is secure enough to make even powerful and advanced governments sweat. It's why they rely on metadata more than trying to crack encrypted data.

This whole fiasco is exactly why I'm glad that RuneScape has done such a solid 180 in the right direction, because it seems to me that modern MMOs just simply cannot make it.
Either they flop, get canned, lose momentum or aren't even really an MMO in the first place.
Meanwhile, my first MMO is taking game integrity seriously and adding loads of new content.

Personally, the glitch art side doesn't make me feel nostalgic per-se, but I do see it as an artistic iteration on the genre (often used with a sense of irony).
On that subject, many see vaporwave as a critique on 90s consumerism and culture but personally, I don't understand that interpretation. My interpretation is that it's a bittersweet vision of both my childhood AND of the future that I (and many others) imagined in those days, which is why I love it!

Star Wars Micro Machines were THE toy of my childhood. I had the majority of them and would come up with all sorts of stories and scenarios with them in addition to reliving the scenes from the movies (and games)!
I hate that the reboot with The Force Awakens ended so quickly. I collected most of those as well and they were almost as good as the classics.

While I prefer the base Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, its standalone expansion (Mysteries of the Sith) has one of my favorite Star Wars aesthetics of all time.
It captures the dark, "gritty" feel that people often talk about with shows like Andor, but it does so without abandoning what makes Star Wars what it is, as Andor did.

I've decided to return to GOG fully, not just to play existing games, but with the openness of purchasing from them again.
Steam will remain my home and the first place I prioritize buying from but for older games, and for games I really like, I'll be going back to buying DRM-free from GOG.
In just the last two days, I've already spent more time playing my games from GOG than from Steam, something I haven't done for a very long time.

McDonald's is the worst offender, by far. I hate that my kids will never know the feeling of going to the playroom to have fun after their meal.
I only eat fast food because I basically have to eat whatever my family is eating (I don't have a car or a whole lot of money right now), and they are constantly eating fast food. Drives me nuts because I'd like to cut the seed oils and eat wholesome foods instead :terry_nono:

Honestly, their modern look reminds me of the look Chipotle had when I was younger as well: kinda industrial, brutalist, edgy... except TB took out the cool factor of that aesthetic lol. That said, it really is one of the better modern restaurant aesthetics overall.
Also, if you live in small town USA, you'll find a lot of diners and restaurants that have retro aesthetics. Maybe not old school TB but still, pleasant throwbacks!

I've been using this keyboard+mouse combo since 2021 and while the mouse has loose components inside (not sure when that happened), both still work flawlessly. I can't go back to using a membrane keyboard, I adore the tactile feedback on mechanical keyboards.
Probably the best cheap keyboard I've ever used and the mouse isn't half bad either. I'm shocked that the mouse wheel isn't broken. Every other cheap mouse I bought broke like that within the first year :terry_nono:

Never liked Taco Bell??? That's pretty much blasphemy to my generation :guilded_lul:
But yeah, I just wish that they kept this general aesthetic and updated it slightly. Modern TB design isn't BAD (it's one of the few fast food restaurants that still has some level of beauty to it) but this look was just unbeatable. They could've kept it "with times" without outright abandoning the colors and designs entirely.

I haven't played all the Ys games yet but there's such a charm to Falcom's games! I was a latecomer to their games as I didn't get into JRPGs until the past few years, but once I sunk my teeth into Tokyo Xanadu, I knew I needed to play more of their games.
Would you recommend this one for a modern playthrough or should I stick to the ones I can get natively on PC?

In addition to that, once you've played and enjoyed the original games, there's an extensive modding scene with plenty of standalone mods.
Most notable is Black Mesa, which even original HL devs say is a better experience; I recommend playing the original first, however, as Black Mesa feels way better when you know how the original played.
There's also Portal: Revolution, which is an interquel between Portal 1 and 2, I definitely recommend playing that one at some point!

You can't go wrong with the original. With Half-Life, you definitely want to play them in story order as it makes a lot more sense like that. You can also play the two expansions (Blue Shift and Opposing Force) as they're both REALLY good but they're also not technically canon.
After that, go for HL2, then you can go into the two expansions for that game as well (Episode 1 and 2), as those ARE canon.
Portal can be played whenever you like. Tied in, but not critical for the HL story.

I always preferred retro games from the NES onward but I did grow up on some of the 2600 games.
Now that I've been getting into retro computing, I've been learning just how revolutionary Atari was in those days! I mean, I knew the 2600 was the first home console to really hit mainstream success but I didn't realize just how far Atari's impact went in both video games and personal computing.

Real talk, though... I try to keep my weekends focused solely on fun stuff. Maybe not always gaming, but I try to avoid things that take a lot of time or drain a lot of energy unless it's specifically something I wanted to do that day.
On weekdays, I carve out an hour or two before bed to unwind with a game, videos or a personal project.

I normally would but the stock cooler that came with my CPU is actually pretty solid so I didn't feel the need to do so. Still, I love the look of those larger coolers so I might dig it out next time I dust out the interior. Couldn't hurt to replace the thermal paste anyway!

Honestly, in their golden age, Interplay was pretty much the king of PC gaming. So many phenomenal CRPGs were released during that era, from Fallout to Baldur's Gate to Planescape: Torment. While some of those games were developed by other studios, Interplay both developed and published so many borderline flawless games back then.
Also, I never played the original but the enhanced was amazing!

I'm mostly a Raisinettes and cookie dough ball kind of guy. I prefer the stuff that doesn't easily get stuck in the teeth (though Raisinettes can sometimes), which is why I avoid Sour Patch Kids entirely at the theater.

To my understanding very few (if any) weapons in Star Wars are actually lasers. Most of them are some sort of plasma or bolt-casting weapons. But it's a fair point lol

Legit one of the most influential Star Wars games for me. I never got far as a kid because I found it challenging (though I beat Rebel Assault 2 many times over somehow), but the atmosphere is unbeatable.
This first level is also why I found Star Wars Rebels so nostalgic for me: the way they portrayed the Imperial facilities immediately reminded me of this game!

While the lead vocalist is Ted Poley of Danger Danger, background vocals were done by Tony Harnell, most famously of the glam rock band, TNT. Tony also did lead vocals in "It Doesn't Matter" from the first game.

Insane to me that this place is two years old already...
I still remember signing up with low expectations. Not because of OP or the idea of Retro Gaiden, but because my previous Fediverse experiences had all been bad.

I also got this same version and same deal, but mine came with Metroid Prime and a Prime 2 demo disc instead of Mario Kart. Still probably my favorite console overall, and not just because it's nostalgic for me.

No doubt, it's one of a kind! One nice thing is that OpenMW exists and the potential for that hasn't even come close to being reached. With graphics mods and gameplay tweaks, it can feel like a remaster at times!

The side panel GIF not only going between graphics, but also changing size... that's about the most 90s web thing I've seen on the modern internet and I freaking love it :odysee_laughing:

I definitely wouldn't mind a Morrowind remaster but Oblivion really did seem to make more sense for them. A Morrowind remaster would be a bit of a Kobayashi Maru.
If they keep it true to the original gameplay, it won't sell too well and the series newbies will be mad. If they change it up "for a modern audience", the classic fans will hate it and potentially stop buying Bethesda games in general.
Oblivion was close enough to the modern formula that it definitely made the most sense.

A very special era for Bethesda. This was their "last chance" game. They were dealing with a sequence of commercial failures after Daggerfall and if Morrowind wasn't the smash hit it became, they probably would've shut down. We may never have gotten legendary games like Oblivion, Fallout 3 (and, by extension, New Vegas) or Skyrim.
Some people argue it doesn't hold up well but I disagree. Yes, some mods will make it a better experience, but ultimately, it's still a rock-solid RPG!

But I did notice that the gif on the left-hand side now overlaps with the links at the bottom (at least on my system), which makes them challenging to read. Might just be on my end, though!

My Blu-Ray copy of the show is still sitting on my Blu-Ray player... I dug it out to rewatch it but haven't had the chance to sit down and actually do so. Such a great series! I have yet to see the movie, though.
