I've been searching aswell but also with these results they all seems to be dashboards, gateways, or whatever that integrate with payment processors. I can't find a truly self hosted payment processor.
The only one that genuinely claims to do it is Payram, but they seems so sketch that im not going to use it.

The installation requires some linux knowledge yes, the usage after is pretty simple.
Issue is any person used to android is going to wonder "why is this app suddenly gone from the store". Unless you use waydroid, but I'm not sure how seamless the experience is there. Or if they don't use any apps that don't have linux equivalents.

NAW is the data the operator can get from the phone number, static data from the carrier subscription. It's dutch for name, address, city.
AML is Advanced Mobile Location, a standard that allows your phone to send the GPS coordinates to the operator.

Quick post today, readers may remember that in the last post that the 112 test was today, so i hope you all set your alarms for this post!
imsd emergency calling works! end to end tested on the live network!
I called 112 in the designated time slot and had full two way voice with the operator, plus NAW data, sadly the AML did not work.
The Netherlands doesn't use the text based AML my code had, ive send an email thanking them for the test and requesting information on the data based AML aswell as a possibility for a future second test when that works.
I do have to say that i can only say this works for the netherlands, i can tell the emergency path works in the modem and it took the genuine correct path, i can't guarantee it. I'm not sure what the risk is that it works here but not elsewhere but i think its right to state this.
Before doing the first test i was so nervous with my phone hovering the call button but im glad it all worked out in the end, the operators were really kind too.

Good to know that it works, but i'm still not sure about the legality of it.
Im not a lawyer and i really don't know this so please bear with me, but the Radiocommunications act states:

We are talking about the volatile memory here, the LPDDR5 DRAM
Waydroid is a android container for wayland systems, what makes it so memory intensive that its basically running an full android userland, which normally is fine but since now you're running it atop your exisitng userland the total memory usage is much higher since now you are running 2 userlands instead of just one.

The UI userland is the easiest part of a linux phone, its basically all the stuff that is already running on desktop. Forking AOSP and redoing the UI/storage framework is a ton of effort and not the problem.
The issue is the kernel, even if you use a AOSP userland you still need to get all the hardware working in the kernel, unless you use vendor kernels but that contradicts the open and in our control part.

The FP6 has full working audio calls with my image, yes the issue with audio routing was also there for the FP6 port, so i solved it by stop trying to solve it.
Im doing IMS fully in userspace now, so it just goes via regular wireplumber instead of the modem's voice services.

It really depends if you mean:
1. You want to learn mobile linux development
2. You want to learn linux kernel development
3. You want to learn software development in general
i will try my best to awnser each of these:
1. This is fairly straightforward, but it really depends on your device, ideally you want a device that already boots but has some features missing, and then start the easiest of those, the sensors on the FP6 were fairly easy since they were all on the I2C bus and the manual showed the exact pins. To obtain this knowledge the easiest way is to just look at android, if an open source version exists for your device, you can download that and look how they do it, aswell as using a rooted device to view it live. it could just be as easy as copying android.
2. Don't go straight to the phone, get started on kernel development on your pc first, make a simple module for example. don't dive straight into the deep of phones.
3. Don't go into the kernel at all, if you start hard you will get frustrated and quit. Pick something you would have fun with developing, something very easy. and then get started with that. this really depends on the person however so its hard to give concrete advice here. but make a simple C or C++ game or app or console utility that you would enjoy.
https://www.w3schools.com/ is a very easy introduction, alternatively you could use AI aswell. but make sure to tell it to never do the work for you. make it give you hints or explanations.

This entire collum can be made green.
We are nearing 100% completion, but im afraid true 100% might never happen.
I was working on the fingerprint sensor aswell, but its gated behind the TEE, and can't be read from the kernel. This is going to be an issue.
So the end state might not be 100% sadly, but i hope people don't miss the fingerprint sensor too much? (ill see if i can get it working but this is one thing i cannot promise)
But we are nearing the end, With the sensors done the only thing left is the cameras.

## My hot take on the current discusion
This might earn me some hate but i am against Jolla, many people argue "don't let perfection stand in the way of good" but we have perfection right here, its the FP6.
For several reasons:

This is blatant false advertising.

Yet it uses a Big Tech kernel.
There is a huge difference between a mainline linux phone and a linux phone using an android kernel.
Combined with the fact that has much debated that there are closed source components and it can't run wayland apps.
There should be no excuse for closed source components period, no matter if they are small or easily to remove, if there is close source anywhere that means that closed source is not an required but a marketing strategy.
And that is the issue i have with Jolla, it gives me the wrong vibe, big tech wearing foss clothing.

This is commitment to open source, this single document has allowed me to do this bringup.
Does Jolla publish one? not that i can find. If they do i retract this point but i haven't been able to find it.
So why don't they? If they truly believe in openness why not publish these documents? My hypothesis: they don't care. Its all just marketing.
Soon the FP6 will be fully ready, a true daily drivable modern mainline linux phone.
I believe in maximum openess, so lets define mainline:
its the https://github.com/milos-mainline/linux staging kernel, combined with my patches.
All my patches have already been submitted on the list, but these will take time to be reviewed, it will be a very long time before they will be integrated in the kernel itself.
But they have been submitted, and im activily working on the maintainer feedback, these will make it eventually.
Once cameras are done, i will make an easy to install script and post it here.

These will be identical if you flash it yourself, these are for people that can't otherwise buy one, don't want to flash it themselves, or want to support me.
I also want not only the code to be open but also the business to be open and honest, i take whatever price i can source the phones at and add a €50 euro markup, none of this ending the price in 99 nonsense.
I do this to cover the administrative costs and labor costs.

i think it's going to take a while, pmOS Edge as time of writing is still at 7.0.8, the first of my kernel patches will arrive in 7.3. the rest will probably take longer.
when imsd will land i have no idea as its not a patch but a new package.

Not really, there is not really and official linux kernel maintainer for specifically the FP6, Luca maintains the FP6 kernel but does so out of tree.
With the patch series i mentioned is pure about the audio, so for any device using that audio.

My philosophy is that linux should be as accesible as possible, nobody should be forced to be stuck with big tech.

Honestly if there is demand, which judging from the comments here there is. I might start selling them with pmos and prepatched so they work out of the box.
I can buy the phones here in the Netherlands for €395 currently, tax and shipping and stuff does still need to be added to that.
Would that be interesting for you?
I would rather not want to charge a markup as that goes against my values but I would like to have some compensation for my time doing these as this is a per unit time cost instead of a one time cost as with software.
As a potential customer would you agree more with a small markup (think like €15 maybe) or an optional donation?

Not yet, for development I have to completely wipe it regularly which makes having all my data on there a bit inconvenient.
Once I'm done with the hardware development I do plan on using it as my main phone, cause why go trough all this trouble otherwise?
Battery life is fine enough, lasts about a day with my current, for example I turn wifi power saving off cause otherwise my ssh keeps dropping, I made a somewhat detailed power analysis in my first post here.
Calls are dependable, haven't tested SMS yet.
The only thing about calls is that imsd currently doesn't support emergency calls which I do plan on adding in the future, but testing it is a crime, so I need to figure that out.

Glad to see more people working on it! I think the Fairphone 6 might actually have the potential to become a "mainstream" linux phone.
I hope maybe fairphone would be interested in selling a variant with pmOS pre installed, like they do with murena?
The issue with mainstream linux is that the average person doesn't know what a bootloader, adb, fastboot etc is. They just use whatever it comes with out of the box.
And that is not bad, I think that eltisim will bring us nowhere. Instead of arguing with people that they should learn the terminal like its scripture we should focus on making the user experience as easy and frictionless as possible, so that a person can just order a phone and that it just fully works. No installation or other stuff required.
I think if that is the primary blocker for mainstream adoption.

There is one thing you should look at before getting one, I'm not sure if it supports the bands canadian carriers work at. It's a thing worths checking beforehand.

So here it is! working VoLTE calls with audio on linux!
What a rollercoaster it has been i'll tell you that.
The frequency between my previous posts was only a few days, as you can see from the time since my last post this has been a *far* harder project.
But a successful one!
Now fully powered trough my new imsd project:

As i said in a my previous comment no matter what i did the regular modem route wasn't working, so i had to come up with my own.
This has several advantages however, call audio is now just routed trough wireplumber & pipewire, so its integrated much better.
Both inbound and outbound calls work.

The patient route is waiting until my patches get accepted upstream, a few already have and are coming in 7.3 probably (pmos runs 7.0 currently still oof), a few will probably take longer, 7.4 or beyond.

I will soon be publishing a shell script that does the entire installation soon for easy installation.
Sadly there is no way to just plug in an android and do it, so there are still a few manual steps needed, but i believe the path to adoption is reducing friction as much as possible, so ill do my best to make it as easy as possible to use.

So what is an "imsd"?
its a full userspace implementation of the IMS protocol, which drives VoLTE (4G) calls.
Normally the modem firmware drives this, but this is quite difficult to work with, now it runs fully via a standard daemon on linux!
Along with several d-bus helpers that integrate it with standard plasma-dialer.
if made a APKBUILD for pmos that is mutually exclusive with 81voltd, and loads imsd instead. so installation should be easy.

I am just one guy with one phone with one carrier.
I can say it works on the Fairphone 6 with KPN. it might work with other carriers and other Qualcomm phones aswell, so potentially this could work for the entire linux phone ecosystem, but i have no way to test that.
