📚Readers’ Friday Book Club was a success!
We discussed Chapter 12: “Warning Signs,” from Hijacking Bitcoin by Roger Ver and Steve Patterson.
The chapter takes us into some of the earliest conflicts around Bitcoin and raises difficult questions about who influences the protocol, how technical decisions are made, and what happens when competing visions for Bitcoin collide.
Key takeaways from today’s discussion:
→ Bitcoin’s technical decisions are never purely technical. Decisions around block size, transaction confirmation, fees, and scaling can fundamentally affect who can use Bitcoin, how they use it, and what role third parties play.
→ The blocksize debate was also a debate about Bitcoin’s purpose. Should Bitcoin prioritize being widely usable as digital cash, or primarily function as a settlement layer for larger transactions?
→ Decentralization involves trade-offs. Keeping blocks small can make validation easier for some users, but restricting on-chain capacity can also increase fees and push everyday transactions toward custodial or centralized services.

A few key takeaways:
🔸 Bitcoin is bigger than price. Its values include privacy, freedom, self-custody, and individual sovereignty.
🔸 Bitcoin adoption should never mean giving up fundamental rights. We must be willing to question governments, even those that publicly support Bitcoin.
🔸 We need to separate Bitcoin from the state. A government adopting Bitcoin doesn't automatically make its policies pro-Bitcoin.
🔸 Africa must learn from every experiment. As more African countries explore Bitcoin, we should build systems that protect privacy, individual freedom, and financial sovereignty from the start.

BitDevs Zambia is the technical arm of Bitcoin Zambia and a fast-growing community dedicated to strengthening the country’s Bitcoin developer ecosystem. It brings together developers, builders, educators, researchers, and technically curious participants of all experience levels.
Through Socratic seminars, workshops, bootcamps, reading groups, and collaborative projects, the community focuses on Bitcoin protocol development, Lightning Network, open-source contributions, and building practical solutions relevant to Zambia.
Key Objectives:
🔹Advance Bitcoin technical education — Equip developers and enthusiasts with deep knowledge of Bitcoin’s protocol, cryptography, network design, and related technologies through accessible, high-quality learning.
🔹Deliver hands-on developer workshops and bootcamps — Provide practical training in building Bitcoin and Lightning applications, including wallet development, integrations, and tool creation.
🔹Foster open-source collaboration — Connect local builders with mentors and contributors across Africa and the global Bitcoin ecosystem to work on real projects and contribute to open-source repositories.
🔹Organize study groups and Socratic seminars — Create regular, interactive forums for discussing BIPs, research papers, protocol developments, and technical literature in a peer-led, beginner-friendly environment.
🔹Drive Lightning development and local innovation — Build practical Lightning Network skills and support the creation of usable Bitcoin tools and solutions tailored to Zambia’s financial and technological context.
