"making it" is sooo skewed towards "1 billion or more users or its a failure"-mindset;
Software and communities can be wildly successful with millions (or even thousands) of users, if it fits the target audience use-case, vibe and mindset.
Mastodon doesn't have to "beat" anyone or have more users than any other system to be successful :)

if it’s mainly Linux systems you can try upx on the binary or zipping it up.
I changed one of our internal DX clis at work to be zip download instead of direct binary and shaved up about 70% of the binary size.
UPX is similar but does is smarter, but not very functional on macOS
