Thankfully, it doesn't snow that often here. This winter is being special though! I don't put much effort into clearing the ground panels (I'm physically weak bleh), the winter days are short and I'm not exactly losing a lot of production. Most of my energy is made March-November. That said, this evening I plan to give the snow a nudge and see if it slides down. If not, oh well!

My 9-year solar report card is in!
in the spring of 2017, I installed my solar energy system. The price tag was $42,000 (I got slightly used panels and saved a lot). It was a significant upfront investment...and worth every penny.
Now that we are in 2026, I ran the numbers. I passed the break even point in 2022, and am roughly $21,000 in profit! The total value generated so far is over $63k.
The next five years look even better. With utility rates rising astronomically, the system will generate another $36k or so. By 2030, the total profit should exceed $100k !!
If you are still on the fence about whether the math works on a solar investment….well, it did, does and will accelerate as energy prices keep inflating. It's much safer than many other investments in the current economy - at least until this regime is gone.

I put my mouse in the microwave !!
Seriously. I have a bluetooth mouse that wouldn't enter pairing mode. It was connecting to *something*... maybe a smart switch or whatever. This cheap mouse has no way to enter pairing mode if it's connected to something.
So anyway, a microwave oven is a faraday cage. I turned the mouse on, tossed it in, shut the door and waited. It entered pairing mode quickly, and boom, connected to my tablet.
A+++ life hack by yours truly. Just don't start the nuker or magic smoke will come out 😆

I'm decided to crowd-fund an expansion to the public information #torrent server.

The Spain/Portugal power outage is fascinating to me, as an energy storage professional.
Lots of theories flying around about the cause. Atmosphere, cyberattack, renewables.
Power grids keep balance via their AC frequency. In the US, it's 60Hz. If the frequency is a little above 60, then there is a surplus of generation. If the frequency is below 60, there is a surplus of demand. Generators and loads respond to this - it's called frequency response.
Last year in Virginia, in data center alley, there was a frequency disturbance that caused a large number of data centers to drop off the grid onto backup power, leaving a huge surplus of generation. It almost collapsed PJM. (I'm actually working on a project to mitigate this using very large batteries).
Spain lost 15GW of generation in seconds. My speculation is frequency went out of spec, for whatever reason, which caused a ton of solar and wind generators to island themselves, and the situation amplified itself. #theory #spain #poweroutage

Is society doomed? Today's kids are "learning" from ChatGPT. See when I was in school, the failed racist public education system was grossly biased - outright lies like about Thanksgiving and Columbus and such, but that was it. The basic facts like 1+1=2 were taught properly. Nowadays, ChatGPT might tell a kid that 1+1=11, and they never question it.
