Today I handed my @npub1pl0…qn57 #FLX1 running #phosh and #GNOME to an assistant on a ferry to get the paid WiFi activated. I expected to have to explain the whole OS, but she required literally zero help. Navigating phosh, disabling/activating airplane mode and WiFi, opening and checking the WiFi settings, opening a browser, etc. - she just did it without questions. I doubt she had ever seen this OS before.
I guess a Linux phone is not that hard for "normal people", then.

I don't know. Back in my time the "newbs" were often the most fanatic FOSS advocates, we basically had to hold them back. This feels different. Like if someone had hired a web brigade.

I've been seeing so many crazy comments on #FOSS and #Hacker sites lately, I'm starting to wonder if this is just a coincidence. People questioning the point in FOSS OSes because the commercial stuff just works so well for most people. People defending Google's move to lock down #Android because "how hard is it to get a developer license, anyways". Heck, today someone made FOSS OSes look even worse than walled gardens because not everybody can just get any application into the repositories.

Oddly one of the few things I managed to rescue from system to system since the 1990s is a large collection of viruses including hacker zine articles from their authors. Maybe I can find the time to correlate the materials.

Yes, the simulation model is so old and was so successful, modern replacements are modeling their API parameters like the old punch card formats. Is this a form of #retrocomputing?

The (poor...) way #Linux handles Out Of Memory situations, and the lack of sophisticated application lifecycle management in FOSS toolkits, can make life on #LinuxMobile not so much fun. When memory fills up too much, devices lag and random stuff breaks.
@npub140s…vdvq from @npub1pl0…qn57 ported #lmkd from Android to "pure" Linux and improved it in many ways. It consumes much less resources than #earlyoom and took my #FLX1 to over 5 days uptime for the first time!

I did some research. Gypsy could only Copy-Paste text within itself. Smalltalk-76 only supported Copy-Paste of text between Code Windows within the Smalltalk environment, and not in applications. This might have changed with Smalltalk-80, but I don't know.
Did Interlisp-D have this before the Apple Lisa came out in 1983? The video is from Interlisp Medley, released in 1992.

Copy-Paste with a "clipboard" was invented by Larry Tesler at Xerox for the Gypsy word processor on the Xerox Alto, and then he also implemented it in Smalltalk-76 for the Alto. So by the time the Alto actually shipped to customers in 1978, they should have had access to multiple applications offering Copy-Paste.
The thing I don't know is if there was any constellation in which you could Copy-Paste between different applications, which is the original question.

If someone were to invest development resources into the Open Source ecosystem right now, improvements to which area would benefit the user experience across all device form factors (desktop, laptop, mobile etc.) the most? You can name both individual applications, libraries and subsystems as well as broader topics like e.g. "messaging".

#Newsflash is a great @npub1dug…kxeq app that supports synchronization with #NextCloud #News. The new 4.0 Beta release now works much better on my @npub1pl0…qn57 #FLX1 phone. Especially the web view is so much smoother.

Threads seem to be a "controversial" feature somehow. While there are users who love them so much that thread support is e.g. currently the #1 voted issue for FluffyChat, at the same time there doesn't seem to be a lot of motivation to implement them. Neither Fractal nor NeoChat nor FluffyChat fully support them right now.
Kinda like spaces.

I attached an #RTLSDR USB receiver to my @Furilabs #FLX1. It works as expected, in this screenshot receiving all of our neighbor's wireless weather stations.
(And the odd wireless tire pressure sensor, now I have to find that Toyota and tell its owner it's too low)

According to the chat it's not standard USB-C Alt Mode but something different. They're preparing to make the necessary hardware available on their shop.

"If it doesn't support #WhatsApp natively, it's going to be a failure" was one of the common criticisms during #UbuntuPhone times ten years ago.
"Does it support #Signal?" is a common question about #linuxphones.
Good reminder that we still haven't figured out messaging at all and #lockin can easily happen even with solutions that look more free and open at first glance. There are still no good alternatives to Signal's iOS/Android apps.

Apparently the #Furilabs #FLX1 actually did have the hardware to drive an external display over USB-C and it's now being made usable. That changes the value proposition of the device a lot!

You're right! It doesn't only support "--end-of-life=REASON", but also "--end-of-life-rebase=ID". The latter can actually point to a new AppID.
I've never seen it in action, but I found an app on Flathub that actually changed its AppID this way and tried it. Seems to work as expected.

One of my main gripes with #LinuxOnMobile has always been On-Screen Keyboards. phosh-osk-stub finally seems to do everything I want. It autocompletes words and has keyboard layouts that don't force you to switch through too many pages, offering long-presses instead.
@npub1pl0…qn57 plans to enable it on the #FLX1 by default. To enable it in the meantime:
1. sudo apt-get install phosh-osk-stub
2. sudo update-alternatives --config Phosh-OSK
3. Choose option "2"
4. Reboot

#subsurface is usable on #linuxonmobile. Screenshot from a #Furilabs #FLX1. I wonder if importing dives via Bluetooth also works.

I'm not an Android FOSS expert. It uses MicroG, F-Droid is preinstalled. I additionally installed Aurora Store. Battery life is good, I use it all day and having to charge is not something I think about.
