As of today, AI crawlers from Apple, Anthropic, OpenAI, Amazon, Meta, ByteSpider and Google are all still feeding manically on the endlessly generated babble, totally captive to it.
They could stop, but are instead dedicating an enormous amount of resources. They show no signs of slowing, with the exception of Apple whom had a pathological day 1 honeymoon period, before settling in with the others.
PerplexityBot has dropped off for now. I'd really like to know why, but figure I never will.

I'm glad to share the traffic summary from the 1st month of Science is Poetry. It has been wild, & I've learned a lot!
Things started to get quite silly on the 7th, when AppleBot (Siri, other products) joined the fray, adding 2k+ endpoints to the list & feeding so fast I had to shape them down to keep the server up.
Then came the 8th, which legit looked like DoS from a network in Singapore sending a 'www.google.com' UA, despite evidently not being GG. 3.8M page requests in one day, gulp.

I've done the log analysis and the two biggest contributors that brought the AI crawler hits up to 2 million in a day, a 4x increase on a week prior, are ByteSpider (Singapore networks) and especially AppleBot (used for Siri and other Apple products).

Anecdotally, I am largely and happily surrounded by ND minds and among them is a generally strong critique of AI and wariness of LLM chatbots. For the depressive and grieving however, I have read of high risk of emotional addiction to such software.

I went through a bunch of VMs post patch and found one that had algif_aead loaded & so the PoC passed.
If that module is loaded, you're still vulnerable.
EDIT, for Debian family:
Blacklist like so:

My log analysis shows that what these AI crawlers do is swarm content to get around rate limiting; with many end-points each can be limited to sane human defaults and their automation can still harvest content at massive scales from the same source in little time.
I noticed however that (for unknown reasons) Anthropic started reducing the number of crawler endpoints, tapering down traffic from them. So I doubled the rate to 2/s. This added over 100k hits to the logs in a day.

Actual hits dropping slightly, but more data is pulled from the tarpit day on day. This is reflected by a higher proportion of HTTP 200's - so less bad req's. Less reaching for what isn't there, just want the madness.

Here's a thing I did in a couple of mins to ban all IPs in the parasites.txt serverside. You could ofc REJECT rather than DROP to send a message.

GPTbot is still at it, throughout the night. It seems to have a different pattern to ClaudeBot. It pack-feeds from 2 or 3 different endpoints, and is slower, as though processing content in some way in the course of each page scrape. Its rhythm changes too, but I've not yet looked into correlation between payload size or complexity, and pattern. ClaudeBot is far faster, and has an even step as it moves through the babble. Seems to me it is solely concerned with collection.

I moved the project to a giant of a server, getting ready for launch.
Within 15mins (no exaggeration) of bringing up the reverse proxy, with one link in a wiki, OpenAI's gptbot has found the link and hooked into the maze. Very aggressive, so still some rate limiting to do, threading massage before it's good to go.

In fact now ClaudeBot has stopped reading, it switched to Anthropic's Claude 'searchbot' during the night. It seems it either gave up or decided to respect the robots.txt.
I misread that in the logs a few hours ago. The above address is in fact that of "[email protected]" not "[email protected]"

Still solely ClaudeBot, a page every 2 seconds, but a new src IP of 216.73.216.37. The crawler at that addr has been at it all night. Ceaseless zombie walk through infinitely-hyperlinked randomly generated babble.
My non-Markov text seems far stickier to the ClaudeBot.

Claude is still going. There is now a robots.txt with clear `User-agent: ClaudeBot [...] Disallow /` and it is ignored.
I will say there's a contradiction in setting up a tarpit like this. Sure these crawlers are DoSing anyway - they're uninvited ultra-demanding company - but when you have an infinite maze it feels like volunteering for an exhaustion contest.
My end is CO2e neutral, or at least on traceable renewables. But the other end, who knows. That dimension of it cannot be avoided.

It is quite wild how persistent Claude is, and an eerie feeling watching it just roam ever deeper into the endless rhizome of generated linked pages. It's been like this for a couple of hours now, and is not touching any other pages on the server, solely those in the tarpit. So that PoC does seem to check out.
CPU spikes are worrying, so will need to work the threading a bit and provision a couple more cores.
It has a rhythm of ~10-15s gorging, then a pause for 20-30s, and then at it again

It hit it, but I guess decompressed in a thread. It's a 127M archive that decompresses to 128GB. The bot kept scraping for a bit and then dropped off. Difficult to know if it was a discouragement.
Strange is that soon after other IPs were reaching statistically non-guessable randomly generated URL paths, without touching the webroot or another other tarpit URL prior. They all had iOS UA strings (readily forged).

After seeing ChatGPTBot blow 123 seconds on my drip-feed poison tarpit and then never come back, I got reading on how modern LLM scrapers might employ mechanisms to detect tarpits and blacklist.
During research I came across this tarpit evading scraper that provides some interesting insights into how modern LLM scrapers might do this.

My biosphere bucket was filled today with this news. 10 Kiwi are being finally released into the forests of the Karioi Rāhui (Ruapehu) region. They were welcomed by local iwi (tribe) Ngāti Rangi before release into the land of their ancestors.
They come from a population of over 3000 at the Maungatautari predator-free sanctuary, a number brought up from just 8(!) breeding pairs over 2 decades. I did not know this wonder, despite living on the same island.

Condemnation of the illegal attack on Iran is complicated by some Iranian people celebrating it as the beginning of liberation. An Iranian activist tells me this is further muddied by the fact many monarchists in Iran want to see the regime toppled so that the monarchy can be reinstated.

For the record, no, I don't use 'AI' in any aspect or component of the trainings I give, whether for Nikau, festivals and confs or any of the uni teaching. It is all entirely human made, from documentation, to image and video generation and comms. Always will be, even if supposedly less 'productive' one day, by some empty metric.
I personally don't use it at all.

One of the common misnomers around the migration away from toxic tech stacks is that the options are either 1) services managed by a company or 2) everyone #selfhosting themselves.
There is however an often overlooked 3rd option of community-scaled infrastructure. Here a group identifies their needs, plans & deploys to meet them. Much like a community garden, that infrastructure has people skilled & dedicated to its upkeep in providing for that group, working bees & skillshare as needed.

The session was on BigBlueButton, cameras & voice, on a server hosted in Falkenstein. Chat was in Mattermost, #selfhosted at a home on a NAS in Berlin. My notes on a Nextcloud instance in Frankfurt.
Meanwhile, I'm in Aotearoa NZ, a couple of clicks from Antarctica.
A free & open source sovereign EU stack used over enormous distances & a diversity of endpoint devices.

As we guessed, it seems that despite Google saying they were not making recordings of people's voices and mining them for advertisers, they were doing exactly that.
If it was a colleague caught wiretapping the workplace, we'd have them sacked and never speak to nor trust them again. In the case of Google, it's even more personal.
No Google service is free. We are the terrain they extract from. We always pay.

Founding member Nadya Tolokonnikova, now living in exile, is not phased however:

230+ enviro groups have written a letter demanding a moratorium on Meta, OpenAI, crypto and Google's, supersized datacenter land/water/grid grab in the US.
While encouraging, it seems the locals are already bringing the squeeze:
"At least 16 datacenter projects, worth a combined $64bn, have been blocked or delayed due to local opposition to rising electricity costs."

Also grabbed a Wio Tracker L1 dev kit. I nearly toasted it with wrong polarity on tbe JST connector (hence errm "REV"), swapped it and all good. The ribbon extension cable for the e-ink display was broke, so just connected it direct. Nice wee solar node project this will be.

It's telling when invisible human workers whose job it is to proof 'AI' output, place no trust in it themselves.
One worker for Google was tasked to find the limits of the LLM software's historical breadth:
“I asked it about the history of the Palestinian people, and it wouldn’t give me an answer no matter how I rephrased the question"
And yet the same query for Israel was profuse with detail.
"We reported it, but nobody seemed to care at Google.”

Today while training some sysadmins I shared this real photo of ancient Greek engineers configuring a mailserver.
On the left the brave engineer is trying to stop unauthorised pipelining through the MTA as their knee is viciously attacked by a subtly broken DKIM key. Meanwhile, their co-sysadmin is hammering away at a perfectly good Postfix sender restrictions policy, screaming "It's not DNS!", while bitten by a PTR record quietly hissing "It'ssss DNSssss".

A thread asking difficult but necessary questions around Signal's dependence on AWS, & more generally the troubled narrative that scaling up somehow inevitably implies partnering with Amazon. A partner story to this is that all Internet infrastructure leans on Amazon in some way.
This is not the case, as we saw very well here on Mastodon during the outage, as those using Tor also know, & as those of us that self-host infrastructure do too.

I've been studying the chat app SimpleX (I have to keep abreast of these things for work) & was so over focused on the tool I did not see the hand that made it.
Thanks to a prompt from @npub1xse…lgk3, I looked into the political leanings of the developer.
The author indeed appears to be hardline, highly vocal, conspiratorial extreme right, even so far as drumrolling racist party ReformUK.

With Signal proving to have no failure tolerance server side, we have effectively seen Amazon could switch off Signal. Not that they would necessarily do that, but it is an extraordinary power to hold, even a lever to wield.
I'm not slighting Signal here. I use it in my work. Family, friends all use it. Folk invested trust, & depend on it.
Signal have popularised E2EE chat, brought it to the masses (spurred Meta to Double Ratchet WhatsApp). A huge contrib
The Q is: what will Signal do now?

Delta is really great.
I have to use many different messaging apps in my work, which is to support frontliners in the human rights and enviro defense spaces. 95%(?) use Signal, most could care less about tech, oft express platform fatigue (esp the older among them). They just want to be where everyone else is, to not think about it, and feel a bit safer. So Signal it is.

For a really long time I have wanted a world with this in it:
- Self-host Signal server under my desk or in a network-near dc (https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Server)
- Install Signal app from whatever store
- Open up app and select my alternative server
- Ask friends/family/colleagues to open up their apps and do the same

Disappointing to see nothing on Signal's blog as to the mass outage due to their dependence on AWS. Solely very specific social accounts. Their AWS use for serverside has not been a secret, but it would be good to have a detailed, transparent description of how far this relationship goes, if they have plans to add more resilience, decentering.
Their server side code is OSS yes, but just for audit purposes. To use it you'd need to rebuild the client apps, pointed to your instance.

Interesting article citing research finding that US coal demand has increased 20% on last year, in large part due to datacenter growth.
The majority of that growth is of course attributed to the 'AI' industry, however I was not aware of the 2024 Morgan Stanley finding (referenced in article) projecting that by 2030 datacenters will "triple the emissions that would have occurred without the development of generative AI technology."
