@nprofile…5vlq I use Cryptpad which is like a FOSS, self-hosted, and end-to-end encrypted Google Drive. There is currently no desktop app, but everything is encrypted and decrypted client-side so even if you are using someone else's server, they have no idea what you are doing. It also has real-time code editing which prevents version conflict.

It looks like Codeberg just banned all cryptocurrency related projects, but it was to be expected, given the CEOs relation with Drew DeVault and them taking more far-left stances as of late.
I guess there is simply no viable alternative to GitHub unless you self-host. Maybe the Git-over-Nostr solutions would take off, but I am sick and tired of people bringing unrelated politics into the FOSS movement.

Technically, it was three companies: FutureWave, Macromedia, and later Adobe. FutureWave merley made the prototype before selling it to Macromedia and then Adobe bought them out. Maybe Macromedia could've open-sourced Flash instead of selling itself to Adobe.
Even before Ruffle, there were attempts to reverse engineer Flash and make alternative runtimes for it. The GNU Project had Gnash, Mozilla had Shumway, and there was also Lightspark. I think Lightspark was the most developed, but apparently Flash's EULA prohibited reverse engineering, putting these projects in a legal gray area. I know for a fact that the Gnash developers avoided installing Flash to avoid agreeing to the EULA and they had to work with information that was already documented by others.

MHTML (an HTML format that contains all of the media in a single file) could've fixed the first problem. However, I feel like the ultimate difference between the Flash scene (or the browser gaming scene in general) and the modern indie scene is that most browser games were and are free (with the commercial games being backed by banner ads) and the indie scene is mostly paid commercial games or completely freeware games with no profit incentive. Why is this important? Well if a game is free then more people will try it out and you, the developer can still make money as long as you slap banner ads on your site. Developers can experiment without taking risks.
With modern indie games, customers have to spend wisely and are less willing to try out your game. Not to mention that purchases are a one time thing, unlike browser games where you earn money every time the banner ads load. That's why indiedevs have this make it or break it mentality and it not always works out for them and that didn't seem to be the case during the Flash days.

Someone should add that mechanic into the game.

I still haven't played MKW. I was expecting the open world to be something like the RPG mode in Mario Tennis/Golf for the GBC, but from what I've heard it's basically just the missions from Mario Kart DS, but you select them via a hub world.

Everyone says that Mario Kart 64 hasn't aged well at all (which is true), but I go even further than that. Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart Super Circuit have also aged terribly. SMK has probably aged the worst because CPUs can use items whenever they want. The Mario Kart series didn't get good until Double Dash.

Even if "sensory overload" is real. It does not mean that the world has to cater to you. @nprofile…y54m Sony possibly had that intention since the PS1 days. The story goes that they originally wanted to create a proprietary CD-based format that was slightly bigger than standard CDs. This would allow more data to be stored on the disc while also curbing piracy. This explains why the disc tray on the original PS1 model is bigger than it should be.

There has to be some dedicated following though. Ruffle exists and Flash is way to unique as a gaming platform for some people to give up. I'd imagine it being like all those Apple II devs who stuck with the platform even after the 8-bit computing era ended.
And even then, I think there are a lot of people who are at least still nostalgic for the artstyle. FNF is largely influenced by it though the devs were active on NewGrounds so there's that.

I think Adobe Flash supported vector graphics out of the box. That's what gives many flash games that iconic artstyle. I honestly prefer that over pixel art. If the engine supports SVGs, you can scale and zoom in them infinitely without a loss in quality.

There should be more game engines/frameworks that support SVGs (or any other vector graphics) natively/out-of-the-box. I think indie developers should make games in the style of flash games you saw on Newgrounds. It has much more personality than pixel art and probably is much easier to do compared to hand-drawn art.
Apparently, SDL has native support for SVGs, but I haven't tried it yet.

I do agree that "competitors" have to be containment sites, but instead of being containment sites for topics that are banned, just do what Vidlii did and make it a containment site for people who are nostalgic for simpler times. Vidlii in particular is for those who are nostalgic for old-school (pre-2009) YouTube. The content posted there reflects that, and I hardly see any political content on there.
I'm pretty sure Tumblr and DeviantArt went through drastic changes over the years and people are yearning for simpler times. Just make a site like old-school DeviantArt or Tumblr and attract that audience. You can then add federation simply as a bonus feature and then you can get a sizable and somewhat diverse (in tastes) audience.

Mini-PCs are so underrated. They're so much better than those crappy all-in-one PCs as they are much more repairable and can even be mounted to monitors to serve the same function. Plus, they're perfect for home servers or emulation boxes.
Also, it's just nice not to be doing 100% of my computing on laptops.

That's not true. Pleroma (and it's forks) have emoji reactions, shoutbox, BBCode and LaTeX formatting, WEBP support, and multiple front-ends.
The only reason I'm using a Mastodon server is that this is the only gaming related server (Mastodon or otherwise) that isn't block happy.
And I wouldn't recommend switching to Pleroma or Misskey as it would probably break federation (notice how Mastodon URLs have the @ symbol in them while Pleroma doesn't). Though if you want those features, Qoto's Mastodon fork includes some of them.

The reason why I am so critical about the Star Fox 64 and Ocarina of Time remakes on the Switch 2 is because I feel like N64 nostalgia hit it's peak almost a decade ago (just from people talking about it on YT among other places). It feels like Nintendo is jumping in on the bandwagon way too late, and they already done it once on the 3DS anyway.
It seems like more people are nostalgic for the GameCube, GBA, Wii, and DS right now. As much as people don't want to admit it, it's true. The GC and Wii Zelda's have already been ported to recent consoles, and I don't see them remaking Minish Cap as Capcom was also involved, but maybe it's an opportunity to remake Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks and make them less shit.

@nprofile…2yxa Even actual gaming hardware like the Dreamcast didn't die from piracy, at least not directly. If publishers knew (or at least acknowledged) that piracy doesn't kill sales, they would've still supported that hardware. The real problem was that if your console can easily run pirated software, then it can also easily run homebrew and publishers wouldn't have to pay licensing fees to publish their games on your system, and licensing fees are how console manufacturers make money as they sell their systems at a loss. Homebrew is the biggest threat to any console manufacturer (not including "open-source consoles like the Ouya or OpenPandora), not piracy.

And I bet most of those people who pirated the retail version of DOOM were either kids whose parents refused to buy that game for them or people living in countries where the game was outright banned.

After watching DYKGaming's recent video on the NeoGeo Pocket (Color). I'll take back what I said about it because I regarded it as a disappointment and something only for SNK fans, but I was not aware of some of the unique features like having wireless multiplayer with up to 64 other players, which I think nobody has ever done.

I've also just bought one other game for it today: Fatal Fury Contact and I enjoyed it for what it was. Though the sub battery on my system needs to be replaced. This system requires two separate types of batteries. The sub battery is just a watch battery and it is required for some game's clock functionality. I've ordered a new one and I even plan on using this system as my alarm clock because why not.

Drew DeVault once again has no idea what he is talking about. He is now white knighting Terry Davis saying that 4chan trolls contributed to his further decline in his mental health.
We still don't know if Terry's death was from suicide or purely accidental. His further mental decline happened due to homelessness and that seemed to mostly steamed from further tensions with his father, as Terry was filming his parents and publishing the videos online without their permission, and his dad was tired of him constantly using racial slurs.
Though trolls did provoke him, Terry actually seemed to enjoy livestreaming with his audience. Most of his anger came from people he thought were incompetent, not people trying to provoke him. I don't think any of that contributed to his mental decline.
It wasn't like Chris Chan where people tried to provoke him into doing stupid shit and getting him and his family in trouble. Terry "did it to himself". He was kicked out because his Dad was sick of his behavior, got arrested at one point, and got kicked out of a library for poor hygiene just hours before his death (which may have caused him to kill himself). Terry was a ticking time bomb. He was an unemployable, mentally ill, middle aged man living with his parents who were in their 90s. Even before he got kicked out, I felt that he wouldn't last long after his parents inevitably pass.
While I can't speak for Kent Overstreet, this is another example of Drew revising stories to make it fit his agenda.

Throughout the history of online games directed towards kids (Habbo, Club Penguin, Millsberry, Neopets, etc), all of the sudden, this is a problem and we need to introduce age verification. I've played some of those games growing up, and even knew kids who played those as well, and stories about pedos on them only happened once in a blue moon. Normally, it was some kid who didn't learn the lesson of not giving personal info to strangers online or just not talk to strangers online, period.

So I do have one game with this thing: Sonic Pocket Adventure, and after messing around with it, I do have to say that I'm not a fan of the analog stick. Sure it was ahead of it's time, but the clicking is way too noisy for me and I don't thing an analog stick should be used for 2D games.
I still feel like the WonderSwan is the superior system. Not only does it have more games, despite being Japan-only, but it has a lot more personality to it, while the NGPC feels like something only for SNK fans which isn't bad, but that company is talked about even less than Capcom, Namco, or Konami and those companies exclusively make software.

I managed to get myself a NeoGeo Pocket Color. As much as I generally lack enthusiasm for video game collecting these days, I make a small exception for handhelds as they take up less space and this system in particular is one that I have always been curious about ever since I skimmed through my older brother's video game magazines.

Tumblr has custom HTML which can bring security issues if not implemented properly and Tumblr is notorious for not being advertiser friendly. It would probably be even harder for a smaller competitor.

@nprofile…0mma Also, I think there were some bias here as only hardcore nerds had access to the Internet (or at least Internet analogues) back in the late 80s. They probably didn't even consider that those without access to computer networks were mainly casual gamers.

It turns out that the localization of Ys Book I & II is probably the first example of Japanese game developers taking direct feedback from westerners as Falcom actually had access to CompuServe and listened to the opinions and tastes of western gamers.
And this was all back in the late 80s, no less.

Simulation and strategy games are probably the best examples. They require a certain mindset and aren't for everyone, but they quickly become addicting once you learn how to play them.

Did You Know Gaming just released a documentary on the WonderSwan a few days back and it got me thinking that there should be a revival of handhelds that adopt Yokoi's design philosophy.
For a while, I've had an idea of a handheld system that can be played with one hand. The d-pad or analog stick would be on the front face of the handheld and the buttons would be on the side.
I have no plans on making it, but I think there is still a market for dedicated handhelds like this. The only handheld that is doing anything like this is the Playdate and from what I can tell, it isn't very cheap.

@nprofile…5vlq You can explore the entire thing in one trip as you do it with scuba gear, but you need a professional certificate if you want to explore the bottom, but there is not much there.
It's been on my bucket list ever since I've heard about it because I love being underwater and it feels like something out of a video game level (it reminds me of the city portion of Wet-Dry World in SM64) or a dream. I've always had dreams of being in flooded buildings where you can actually do stuff underwater, so this place excites me.
Hopefully, I'll get a chance to go one day or if not, a similar attraction opens up somewhere else. But of course it's Dubai and the UAE is America's other Middle Eastern ally, so it doesn't look like I would be going there anytime soon. I think there is a similar place in Belgium, but it doesn't have that much scenery.

So I just listened to part 2 of the podcast honoring the legacy of Fredrick Brennan (aka Hotwheels).
And of course they just had to talk about the fursona for the majority of it. They even had a section talking about how furries with disabilities use their fursonas to fantasize themselves being able to walk, talk, hear, etc. I cringed at the entire thing.
I was interested in the other episodes of this podcast because it was dedicated to Internet culture, especially the late Web 1.0 and early Web 2.0 days, which I also have an interest in, as I believe that was the golden age of Internet culture. I listened to their episode about Something Awful because I knew next to nothing about that site other than it being the place where 4chan spun off of and the origin of Let's Plays. It was quite interesting, but these hosts are a bunch of Bernie-bro leftists who don't waste any opportunity to shove their politics in their recordings. They even had Robert "fuck the police but the government needs to do a better job at moderating the Internet" Evens as a guest in some of their episodes.
Though there were some political episodes I found interesting, but because they were things I didn't even know about, not because I agreed with them. For example they covered a small controversy that happened back in 2008 when SimCity creator Will Wright was caught donating to John McCain's political campaign, and that may have been part of the reason why he quietly left Maxis.
Personally, I think that if you are going to document Internet history, you need to put your political biases aside otherwise you are just going to put your revisionism when it comes to controversial events on the Internet such as GamerGate or the history of 8chan. Not once did they bring up the existence of boards like /leftypol/, even if it was one of the most hated boards, it still existed, and was proof that it wasn't exclusively a "Nazi site".
