great to hear you are working on it because sadly currently Monal is exactly one of the anti-examples of a good UI/UX, for an starter just look at that poorly padded/arranged padlock/encryption icons
that floating encryption icon in the middle of nowhere in the case of the shared map location
the low contrast between the padlock and the background of self/outgoing messages, but in general you should move away from padlocks and encryption should be just the default state without extra icons to understand, for some people that looks like a nice handbag you got there
the chatlist items also look off and poorly padded, ex date field looks weird and oddly arranged compared to that > icon, etc
if that "family chat" avatar is a default avatar it looks horribly cropped, the icon needs more padding
that "Party at the Sea" group also looks like a demo app with the members count in parenthesis at the end of the group name, what does it even mean that a group is "online"? what it would make more sense is "2 online" to list the amount of members online, etc there is really a lot of details like that
in general just look at what WhatsApp and Telegram do, that are what most people use and the smoother you make the transition the better, without need to understand new concepts etc
that encryption can drop at any time in the chat is a huge UX footgun but part of a larger problem in XMPP, I would absolutely not offer such encryption option enable/disable/change so in the face if you really are not about serving some nerdy user base

Movim, you actually are my XMPP-hero, the first #xmpp client I know of that implemented message reactions and SANE message replies, all while being more of a social network than chat-app focused
also the first one I have seen to have a nice modern-looking chat interface

WOW!!! @treefit got #DeltaChat (with chatmail core and all!!!) running in the browser!
this prototype is incredibly awesome and working way too good already!
there was some #Tauri version of Delta Chat desktop but that still was just about displaying the UI in the browser, you still depend on a local program and local #chatmail core in your machine
with this the whole thing is running on the client side in your browser tab! the chatmail core is compiled into #wasm
still since you can't connect to IMAP and SMTP from javascript, a proxy is needed to get this prototype working but JUST IMAGINE if chatmail relays would support/allow clients to connect via websocket or http!

I am also missing this a lot in the fediverse, it is so powerful to be able to have more than one server for the same profile, that now I don't even know how to live without it in other platforms
it would be good for the fediverse because quite often you can't see post from other people because your server is not federating with their server, with such network splits having several servers at the same time is even more needed!
there is already #Nostr solving that problem, but to be honest the community around is always talking about bitcoin, crypto, blockchain and other crazy stuff

running a chatmail relay for Delta Chat instead of an xmpp server is indeed more interesting! and yours would get more used than your xmpp server, because in Delta Chat users have multi-homing and can use several servers at the same time or migrate away of servers easily without losing any message, chat or contact, so that makes easy to use any small server without worrying it will disappear overnight
with xmpp you have to be more careful selecting your xmpp server since you will be bound to it forever
as a server admin it is also easier for you to host a chatmail relay for Delta Chat, it requires zero maintenance, accounts are created and removed automatically, messages (encrypted blobs) are also deleted automatically you need to do nothing!
with a xmpp server you have to be more careful with your privacy policy and GDPR etc. because users can send unencrypted messages so you are responsible for potentially sensitive user data, with chatmail all messages are forced to be encrypted so you have no user data at all and it is GDPR compliant out of the box

if you want to get positively surprised, go for Delta Chat, server is super cheap to host and require the least maintenance of all that options you mentioned
it is also the only one of those that has multi-homing meaning people don't depend on your server and can use several at the same time or migrate away of yours etc. meaning even if your server goes down or during maintenance time, they can keep receiving messages etc.
it is also the only one of those that is if you fucked it up and wiped the whole server, can automatically recover without the users even noticing (you don't even need server backups! because there is no groups etc metadata in the server and accounts are automatically re-created on login)
you don't need to worry about storage and account management, accounts get created and removed automatically, storage is removed automatically as well and by default the clients will also delete messages immediately from server after downloading them
it is also the one with the most user-friendly interface and cohesive experience across platforms, the one with the best pain-free multi-device support that just works
in xmpp the group depends on the server, if the server is gone the group is dead, in matrix a lot of group metadata is on the server and reactions are not even encrypted

In today's lesson we will be looking at the image editor of ArcaneChat:
when you attach an image, before sending it you could click in the pencil ✏️ icon to edit it, here you have all kind of cool tricks, from drawing to blurring a part of the picture, ex. to protect some faces
you can also put some text, what not many think of is that using the text option you can also enter arbitrary emoji, and then using two fingers to pan you can make it bigger or rotate it and put it the way you like, this gives you a lot of gadgets to add to make your images more fun
if you have kids in the family using the app they will love it, together with the drawing brush it is also a source of entertainment for small kids! (this was tested already! just a small advice: better do it in a dedicated profile or they might accidentally mess up your chats or send stuff to your contacts!)

sometimes @npub1enq…ycu8 feels like a mafia, some #DeltaChat users tried to create a Delta Chat entry in Wikipedia (EN) several times over the years and they always rejected it, claiming it is not relevant enough and needing more sources,
when sources were provided someone would comment that "likely that are paid articles" and shit like that
even when Delta Chat page exist for other languages already
then there are things like Beeper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beeper_(software) with a SINGLE citation to a paid-walled article
what gives???
please if some of you have experience contributing to Wikipedia (and I guess some secret connections or being known contributor is needed as well) consider creating a Delta Chat entry

it doesn't happen to me and many more, but for sure I have seen some people that claim they don't get push notifications, but without someone close to look at the problem in action and see what is actually happening it is hard
it could be the push notifications server, or your chatmail server, or maybe even you are getting the push notifications fine and it is your phone killing/restricting the app from processing the messages in background

if you don't have push notifications you need to enable the app to always run in background, anyways there is also #UnifiedPush support coming, it also depends on the provider you are using, and ofc maybe you are hitting some bug 🤔

when you use "free" websites and services you will end up paying for it one way or the other, with your data, with dependence, once you depend on something you are more vulnerable to be exploited for it
besides normal web services, even in places like #Telegram, the mini-apps are just websites that you can open right inside the app, but remote websites controlled by 3rd parties in the end, you depend on them to keep operating the service, they have access to all the data you enter and use inside their mini-app
with #ArcaneChat and other #DeltaChat clients it is a completely different story!
YOU are in full control of the data you enter and use inside the in-chat mini-apps
there is no 3rd party with access to it, all data exchange works peer-to-peer between the chat members
there is no dependence in any website or service at all! it is just a normal attachment you send in the chat
they work #serverless! you can even use them while being #offline, so they are offline-first out of the box
yet even your grandparents can use them without even realizing there is a lot of power and freedom you get under the tips of your fingers!
this shouldn't go unnoticed!

the best option for private chatting TODAY when it comes to #security, usability/user-friendly, #resilience, #digitalindependence and #freedom is #DeltaChat a chat app that use #SMTP + #IMAP at its backbone, not your favorite "perfect" chat protocol, you don't need new better protocols, you need tools that actually work for the people

it is a bit ironical to recommend #Signal, a centralized American service that runs on #Amazon, #Google and #Microsoft services and depends heavily on them spending millions each year just to pay to Amazon and then in an #European context recommend that as "digital independence"
Some people say it is a compromise, but the bar is way too low if you recommend Signal at the “digital independence day”. At this point It's about selling a feeling instead of actual accomplishment

I have also been a happy OpenSnitch user, see no reason to recommend something with proprietary crap when there are good alternatives, if it is not full free software that is a huge disadvantage compared with OpenSnitch

👋Hi, #ArcaneChat magician here 🧙‍♂️ this is the section where I teach you some magic tricks to help you get the full potential out of ArcaneChat
In today's lesson we will be looking at the image editor of ArcaneChat:
when you attach an image, before sending it you could click in the pencil ✏️ icon to edit it, here you have all kind of cool tricks, from drawing to blurring a part of the picture, ex. to protect some faces
you can also put some text, what not many think of is that using the text option you can also enter arbitrary emoji, and then using two fingers to pan you can make it bigger or rotate it and put it the way you like, this gives you a lot of gadgets to add to make your images more fun
if you have kids in the family using the app they will love it, together with the drawing brush it is also a source of entertainment for small kids! (this was tested already! just a small advice: better do it in a dedicated profile or they might accidentally mess up your chats or send stuff to your contacts!)
