I also learned a version of how Notting Hill carnival moved from an indoor event, timed with Trinidad carnival in January, to become a street festival on the august bank holiday.
It seems that, separately to the West Indian Gazette’s carnival, a group led by a White woman, re-started Notting Hill Fair, one of those 800 year old summer events that the Victorians closed down. One year, the organisers of that invited Claudia Jones’s carnival to provide a steel pan band for one of the floats. And from there the two merged, with the Caribbean part eclipsing the hippy folk revivalists, and the rest is not very well documented history.

Claudia Jones arrived in Uk as high ranking official in the US communist party. She had been imprisoned and deported from the USA because of her party work, was ill and had no money. She was a convinced and fairly orthodox communist, had been on the CPUSA national committee and had a record as a very talented organiser, newspaper editor and impressive speaker.
Yet the CPGB was seemingly never interested in making use of her talents or in supporting her financially. And they definitely weren’t interested in challenging racism. What she achieved was done outside of the party, not because she abandoned the party, but simply because she couldn’t do anything with them

When English people learn about history in schools they do the Norman conquest, Tudors and Stuarts*, possibly the “Industrial Revolution” and then World War 1 and World War 2.
It struck me that learning about Tudors and Stuarts (actually they just learn about one Stuart: James I) without mentioning the fact that the second Stuart ended up getting beheaded in a revolution is crazy.
It’d be like learning about the reigns of the last of the Russian Tzars without mentioning the October Revolution. Or studying Louis XIV, XV etc without discussing how France was soon to be a republic.

There is right wing violence and pogroms in #belfast with people pleading mobs just to stop setting fire to houses with kids in, and British newspapers are leading with headlines like “refugee charged with medieval knife attack” (the times) “beheading suspect entered the uk via asylum loophole” (telegraph). The Scum have called the attacker a “Sudan fiend” with “evil in his eyes”.
It is so deeply irresponsible. How much tougher on refugees can we be? What do these racist newspaper editor c**ts want? Gas chambers?
Given how tortuous and psychologically harmful the asylum process is, Britain and N.I are lucky that there haven’t been more asylum seekers going beserk.

interesting. Maybe I’m being too simplistic or too liberal here. It feels to me that if you attack Jews because a Jewish state is killing Palestinians, you are racialising all Jewish people. But maybe you are saying that it is not necessarily a dehumanising of Jewish people but potentially a political response (albeit a tactically and morally unsound one) to a racist Zionist war-politics

probably too many viewpoints at once. I think the social democrats should have voted Long-Bailey and tried to keep hold of a valuable piece of infrastructure that they have given blindly back to the union flag-draped neoliberals. The Green Party members will have to go through a similar choice at some point. The Left must remain outside and keep working for a world without leaders, but support what is progressive. Miliband unwittingly created the perfect position with his £3 supporters in his attempt to counter the unions and his touchingly naive belief that there were millions of centrists looking for a political home. But remember we were not even allowed a vote on the question of Labour’s leadership because their gatekeepers kept the gate closed on us! #giveusbackourthreequid

Obviously they have learned this rhetoric from their US funders/advisors/inspirations, however it serves a purpose in the UK too: British = White = Christian, and must be defended by the militaristic Hetero-male. Thus, people who don’t fit those categories don’t count as British.
Also should go without saying that:
a) it’s not even close to a reading of jesus’s actual love-thy-neighbour, Samaritans-are-welcome-here message. Sadly, it is close to some of the Church’s historical positions as pro-imperialist, apologists for slavery.
b) Although Liverpool has a smattering of scumbags like any other place, it is also the city with europe’s oldest black community, oldest Chinese community, long established Jewish, Muslim and other religious communities, is as much an Irish as a British city and hopefully won’t stand for this nonsense. #lfc #ynwa #noborders #antifascism #antiracism

first of all, May should be only be for the FA cup final and county cricket. Secondly, we’ve won the league. Thirdly, we’ve won the league.
However, I saw some things the same and some differently in the #lfc v Brighton game. In no particular order:
I liked Quansah in that game, showing potential. Still bit error-prone, but love the Matip-esque charges upfield; and he covered well, showing good strength and pace.
Sadly, Elliot has mostly not impressed in the, admittedly, few appearances he has had this season. Keeps giving the ball away and I don’t think Slot enjoys that. He can shoot from distance but that’s not really our style anyway.
I love the guy and I have been saying for a while that he should start more, but Endo is not a right back! Has no one been talking about why Slot didn’t bring Trent on? Is he leaving him for the last game?
I actually think Grav has been good post the rest he had against Chelsea. Looked more sprightly again. Covered a lot. Picked up the ball from the centre halves/keeper. Still can’t shoot, but that’s been the same all season. I think the team around him is a bit dysfunctional.
Nuñez, sadly, has gone. He’s not even showing the enthusiasm for chasing man down anymore.
Chiesa has a future. He’s not quite used to the physicality or found his feet in the team but he will get games and goals next year I think.
And some other thoughts. But yeah, weird post-pre season vibes. Not proper games. Hope we end well at anfield and TAA gets a proper send off

I’m gutted that Trent is leaving #lfc of course. Liverpool fans know he is an exceptional talent, who almost redefined the right back role. We have seen how he has worked to keep adding things to his game (he’s almost two footed now for instance). Yet the media have given him stick at different time over the years, and he’s not been picked for England as much as he should have been: can’t defend blah blah blah. After the pundits were praising Cole Palmer to the skies in the last game I was struck how the latter has never got the same scrutiny as Trent. Is it because they are happier with a white (presenting at least) “Englishman” from Manchester than a racialised black scouser?
Regardless of the reasons for it, given the media pressure he has to live through in England, I can understand that Trent might want to leave. Add to that, being the one (or at least the most prominent) scouser on the team is not an easy role. I’ve heard other ex-Liverpool players say the same. Everybody knows someone who knows you and want to bother your family about how “your Trent” is doing etc. You’ve got to carry the expectations of the city in a different way to other players.
On top of all this, he’s young. He knows he has a short career. He might want to try living abroad and playing in a different league. Fine. Rush, Aldridge, McManaman, Owen did the same. Gerrard was sorely tempted. Let’s just hope, like Rush, Trent comes back after year.
So, sad as I am that he’s leaving, I respect his decision and I don’t want to hear him getting any abuse from Reds. That’s for outsiders only. Unless of course he follows it up with a Michael Owen move to Utd. In which case, yeah, he’s dead to me.

Just an excellent performance vs Spurs. Even the fact that we conceded 3 can work in our favour as it keeps us from getting complacent.
A lot of that excellence was down to the decision to play the kids on Wednesday. We looked fresh today. Also, absolutely right to play Szoboslai over Jones- needed his running and work rate against them.
Apart from the obvious plus points, good to see:
• Robbo bounce back. Not a perfect game from him, but, as he has done throughout his career, he steps up when the criticism mounts.
• Gomez looking more and more assured in his return to centre half.
•Lucho being able to play down the middle and give us another option there.
Happy days for #lfc, happy holidays to all #reds to whom that means anything #ynwa

A Liverpool half that was almost like a certain type of Klopp era performance. Lots of possession, not quite creating clear cut chances, occasionally looking vulnerable on the break.
Some nice play out from the back to beat their press; goalie looking solid so far; Gomez impressing. Frustratingly, Robertson and endo gave the ball away a couple of times. Could do with a goal. And a 9 to replace one of the two 10s! #lfc
